The centerpiece of this celebration is the major exhibition Picasso and Chicago, on view from February 20 through May 12, 2013 in the Art Institute’s Regenstein Hall, which features more than 250 works selected from the museum’s own exceptional holdings and from private collections throughout Chicago. Representing Picasso’s innovations in nearly every media—paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and ceramics—the works not only tell the story of Picasso’s artistic development but also the city’s great interest in and support for the artist since the Armory Show of 1913, a signal event in the history of modern art. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 2010 Media Contact: Elizabeth East Telephone: 310-822-4955 Email: [email protected] Alison Saar Foison and Fallow 15 September through 30 October 2010 Opening reception for the artist: Wednesday 15 September, 6-8 p.m. Venice, CA –- L.A. Louver is pleased to announce an exhibition of new three-dimensional mixed media works on paper and sculpture by Alison Saar. In this new work Saar explores the cycle of birth, maturation, death and regeneration through the changing season and her own experience of aging. The two drawings Foison, 2010 and Fallow, 2010, which also give their titles to the exhibition, derive from Saar’s recent fascination with early anatomy illustration. As Saar has stated “The artists of the time seemed compelled to breathe life back into the cadavers, depicting them dancing with their entrails, their skin draped over their arm like a cloak, or fe- tuses blooming from their mother’s womb.” In these drawings, Saar has replaced the innards of the fi gures with incongruous elements, to create a small diorama: Foison, 2010 depicts ripe, fruitful cotton balls and their nemesis the cotton moth, in caterpillar, chrysalis and mature moth stage; while Fallow, 2010 portrays a fallow fawn fetus entwined in brambles. In creating these works Saar references and reexamines her early work Alison Saar that often featured fi gures with “cabinets’ in their chest containing relics Fallow, 2010 mixed media of their life. 55 1/2 x 29 x 1 in. (141 x 73.7 x 2.5 cm) My work has always dealt with dualities -- usually of the wild, feral side in battle with the civil self -----Alison Saar One of two sculptures in the exhibition, En Pointe, 2010 depicts a fi gure hanging by her feet and sprouting massive bronze antlers. -

Alison Saar | Breach Sept. 17–Dec. 17, 2016 Alison Saar explores issues of gender, race, racism, and the African diaspora. She mines mythology, ritual, history, music, and her biracial heritage as sources for her work. During a 2013 residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, Saar was dismayed to see how little had been done to rebuild African American communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina eight years earlier. Upon her return to Los Angeles, she began researching the histories of American floods and the effect on African Americans.The Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927, described as one of the worst natural river disasters in U.S. history, piqued her interest. Heavy rains resulted in the river breaching levees, creating a historic catastrophe that had a profound impact on the life of African Americans living in the Mississippi Delta. The flood exposed the conditions of poor African American sharecroppers and tenant farmers and their relationship with cotton plantation owners. The flood also resulted in social, cultural, federal policy, and political changes. With water imagery woven throughout, Breach is the culmination of Saar’s creative research on American rivers and their historical relationship to the lives of African Americans. Through mixed media sculpture, paintings, and works on paper, she explores floods not only as natural phenomena; but also the complex interaction of social, cultural, and political factors associated with flooding and its aftermath. galleries.lafayette.edu [email protected] 610 330 5361 1. It is not usual for him to dwell upon the past because he prefers to be engaged in the present: all his thoughts and aspirations spring from immediate experience. It is on his works - and not least his graphic work - therefore, that we should concentrate in order to learn most about him. Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest: Note of case hearing on 18 July 2012: A painting by Pablo Picasso, Child with a Dove (Case 3, 2012-13) Application 1. The Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA) met on 18 July 2012 to consider an application to export a painting by Pablo Picasso, Child with a Dove. The value shown on the export licence application was £50,000,000, which represented the sale price. The expert adviser had objected to the export of the painting under the first, second and third Waverly criteria i.e. on the grounds that it was so closely connected with our history and national life that its departure would be a misfortune, that it was of outstanding aesthetic importance and that it was of outstanding significance for the study of the birth of modernism and the reception of modernism in the UK. 2. The seven regular RCEWA members present were joined by three independent assessors, acting as temporary members of the Reviewing Committee. 3. The applicant confirmed that the value did include VAT and that VAT would be payable in the event of a UK sale. The applicant also confirmed that the owner understood the circumstances under which an export licence might be refused and that, if the decision on the licence was deferred, the owner would allow the painting to be displayed for fundraising. Expert’s submission 4. The expert had provided a written submission stating that the painting, Child with a Dove, was one of the earliest and most important works by Picasso to enter a British collection. -

In conjunction with the exhibition The Life of Animals in Japanese Art, the Gallery presents Japanese documentaries on animals, including several screenings of the city symphony Tokyo Waka. Film series include A Cuba Compendium, surveying how Cuba has been and continues to be portrayed and examined through film, including an in-person discussion with Cuban directors Rodrigo and Sebastián Barriuso; a celebra- tion of Walt Whitman on the occasion of his bicen- tennial; recent restorations of Roberto Rossellini’s classic War Trilogy; and New Cinema from Romania, a series showcasing seven feature length films made since 2017.
