Hiro Club News For your cultural life in Hiroshima Onigiri (Rice Balls) Onigiri are Japan’s most popular picnic food. They are eaten with the fingers. They are made by firmly moding rice into triangular, round, or cylindrical shapes in the palms of the hands. Sometimes a mold is used to press the rice into shape. In the Kanto area (east Japan) triangular rice balls were standard, while in Kansai (west Japan) they were usually cylindrical. Many kinds of onigiri are sold by boxed-lunch vendors and at convenience stores and onigiri specialty shops. They’re one of the popular lunches. (Abstracted from The Japanese-English Dictionary for Conversation about Japan, p. 107, Obunsha) The standard ingredients people used to put in onigiri were pickled plums (umeboshi), dried shaved bonito (okaka), and broiled salted salmon (sake). Then, they were wrapped with a dried piece of seaweed (nori). But now, various kinds of ingredients such as tuna with mayonnaise and broiled beef are put in onigiri. Rice goes well with almost all food because the rice itself has no special taste. Yakionigiri is also a popular onigiri. The surface of a rice ball is covered with soy sauce and toasted until it is golden brown. Hot, freshly toasted onigiri smell great and are a popular thing to eat after drinking. Having a picnic under cherry trees is a Japan’s typical picnic style in Japan. The best season to have a picnic is now! Why not go outside with some onigiri and enjoy spring in Japan? This thesis discusses perspectives on the onnagata in film and scholarship, with an emphasis on Western perspective and representation. It discusses the idea of ‘kabuki queerness’ and onnagata as a staged gender. It also proposes different configurations that would allow women to join kabuki without injecting reality into theatre. v Table of Contents Introduction ..............................................................................................................1

WAITING ON THE WEATHER: MAKING MOVIES WITH AKIRA KUROSAWA PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Teruyo Nogami,Donald Richie | 296 pages | 30 Dec 2006 | Stone Bridge Press | 9781933330099 | English | Berkeley CA, United States Waiting on the Weather: Making Movies with Akira Kurosawa - Teruyo Nogami - Google книги The Itami family anecdotes were an unexpected bonus to the wide variety of stories about making movies with Akira Kurosawa. In a recent e-mail exchange with me, Yonesho added the names of Taku Furukawa, Kihachiro Kawamoto and Clive Walley to the list of filmmakers whose work has inspired her. Her work is identifiable by her use of cheerful watercolours and her mixing of media. Wiener Wuast , for instance features a hand holding up a card of paper against various outdoor Viennese locations with watercolour animation dancing across the paper synchronized to music by Norbert Trummer. Many contemporary animation artists come to Europe in order to immerse themselves in unique animation traditions such as the Czech school, the Estonian school, the Aardman school in the UK, among many others. Kihachiro Kawamoto was the forerunner of this trend when he studied under Jiri Trnka in Prague in the s. Fusako Yusaki , whom I wrote about last September, has been a central figure in the Italian animation community since the success of her Fernet Branca commercials in the s. The relationship between European and Japanese animators has strengthened in recent decades through artists sharing work at animation festivals in Utrecht, Oberhausen, Hiroshima, and elsewhere. She has also studied in England and did a research project in Estonia in This has led to a long creative relationship with the city of Vienna.

Outlaw Masters Of Japanese Film Dedicated to the memory of my late father, Paul R. Desjardins, 1919–2003, who went through hell his last few years and was consequently unable to finish his own book on his pioneering work in electron microscopy (in the field of plant pathology). Also to my mother, Rosemary, who has had her own gauntlet to run in the last year and has managed to come out the other side. Both my parents have always been loyal, loving and there for me, never turning their backs on me during my extended period of raising hell. To my girl, Lynne Margulies, a truly great soulmate in all things, including the creative process. And to the memory of late director Kinji Fukasaku, a great inspiration to anyone daring to think of giving up in the face of adversity. I was lucky to get to know him and to consider him as a mentor as well as a friend. OUTLAW MASTERS OF JAPANESE FILM CHRIS D.
