Don – a new invasive plant species for the flora of Baltic States.Acta Biol. Univ. Daugavp., 20 (1): 55 – 60. Allium paradoxum (M. Bieb.) G. Don was recorded as a new species for the flora of Latvia and the Baltic States on the basis of plant material first collected by A. Bojāre and P. Evarts-Bunders in 2020. Relatively large population of this species was found in Rīga, in the Rumbula district (Eastern border of the city), on the slope of the river Daugava covered by natural vegetation, but near the private gardens zone and ruderal places. This species can be easily distinguished from other Allium species by one flat, 5-25 mm wide, keeled leaf per bulb, inflorescence with several bulbils and mostly with only one flower. The species is considered as invasive and spreading by means of bulbils. In Latvia the species has been identified in their typical habitat – disturbed forest and shrubland along the riverbank on damp soil. HERRMANN Abstract: The karyology and phylogeny of Allium lusitanicum LAMARCK [A. senescens subsp. montanum (FRIES) HOLUB] and its relation to other related species of sect. Rhizirideum was studied. A random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis revealed a position of A. lusitanicum apart from the Asian species A. senescens. A distribution map and a complete synonymy of A. lusitanicum is given, together with a phylogenetic hypothesis of the red flowering species of sect. Rhizirideum. Introduction Allium lusitanicum LAM. is commonly given the rank of a subspecies by the name of A. senescens L. subsp. montanum (F.W. SCHMIDT) HOLUB, and it has a very complicated taxonomic and nomenclatural history. A discussion of some aspects of its nomenclature is found in the works of HYLANDER (1945) and HOLUB (1970). STEARN (1978) has con- clusively distinguished correct names at all ranks for this taxon: if given the rank of an independent species, it should accordingly be named A. lusitanicum LAM., as subspecies A. senescens subsp. montanum (FRIES) HOLUB; and finally, as a variety, the name A. senescens var. calcareum (WALLROTH) HYLANDER would be appropriate. Allium senescens L. was described by LINNAEUS (1753), completly based on GMELIN'S taxon Allium scapo ancipiti teretiusculo, foliis ensiformibus, hinc paulo convexioribus from Siberia (GMELIN 1747, tab. 11, fig.2). St.-Hil.) впервые указывается в качестве абориген- ного вида для флоры Беларуси. На основании собственных сборов и анализа гербарных материалов его произ- растание подтверждено в юго-западной части республики (в Брестском районе Брестской области). Ранее данный вид определялся белорусскими ботаниками как A. angulosum L. The biggest Allium giganteum bulb producer is the Netherlands, but there are smaller producers in Israel, France, Japan and Latvia. (Rabinowitch and Currah, 2002; Kamenetsky and Rabinowitch 2006). The situation was different before the middle of the 19th century when Eduard Regel and other botanists went to Central Asia and discovered many new species among which was Allium giganteum Regel. (Dadd, 1987). This new weed species belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and Allium genus. (Li, Zhou, Yu, Zhang and Wei, 2010). This plant was used by native people as spice in cheese production and as an herb.
