Received 30 November, 2017; Accepted 4 July, 2018 The widespread distribution of Crinum macowanii across the African continent has entrenched the plant’s medicinal usage in treating diverse diseases. While its phytochemistry is well established, its microbial symbionts and their utility have not been described. As such, five bacterial endophytes, viz. Staphylococcus species C2, Staphylococcus species C3, Bacillus species C4, Acinetobacter species C5 and Staphylococcus species C6 were isolated from fresh C. macowanii bulb and their phenotypic and genotypic profiles verified by Gram staining and 16S rRNA gene sequencing; respectively. The latter was used to construct a phylogenetic tree that showed similarities (higher than 50 bootstrap values) among the endophytic bacterial isolates. Chemical analysis of bacterial endophytes was done by extracting the crude extracts of each endophyte. Antibacterial activity of each endophyte was performed against a few selected bacterial pathogenic strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus) using the disk diffusion method with Streptomycin used as a positive control. -

Now is the time to pot up your divisions for our sale tables. Please use only soilless potting mix and remember to label every pot (common name and botanical, if known). The May plant sale will return to the Ithaca High School on May 14. Our tables/booth are located in the new gym, same as last year, exact location TBD, so look for us. Sale hours are 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (although we may sell out earlier). Set up is Friday beginning at 4 p.m. until about 7 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. You may arrive early Saturday to drop off plants and help complete the setup. This year we appreciate, if you can, to sign-up to help in advance. We most need people for set-up and clean-up. Of course, you are encouraged to jump in to volunteer at any time; there's always something to do. -

Phylogeny and Phylogenetic Taxonomy of Dipsacales, with Special Reference to Sinadoxa and Tetradoxa (Adoxaceae)
PHYLOGENY AND PHYLOGENETIC TAXONOMY OF DIPSACALES, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SINADOXA AND TETRADOXA (ADOXACEAE) MICHAEL J. DONOGHUE,1 TORSTEN ERIKSSON,2 PATRICK A. REEVES,3 AND RICHARD G. OLMSTEAD 3 Abstract. To further clarify phylogenetic relationships within Dipsacales,we analyzed new and previously pub- lished rbcL sequences, alone and in combination with morphological data. We also examined relationships within Adoxaceae using rbcL and nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. We conclude from these analyses that Dipsacales comprise two major lineages:Adoxaceae and Caprifoliaceae (sensu Judd et al.,1994), which both contain elements of traditional Caprifoliaceae.Within Adoxaceae, the following relation- ships are strongly supported: (Viburnum (Sambucus (Sinadoxa (Tetradoxa, Adoxa)))). Combined analyses of C ap ri foliaceae yield the fo l l ow i n g : ( C ap ri folieae (Diervilleae (Linnaeeae (Morinaceae (Dipsacaceae (Triplostegia,Valerianaceae)))))). On the basis of these results we provide phylogenetic definitions for the names of several major clades. Within Adoxaceae, Adoxina refers to the clade including Sinadoxa, Tetradoxa, and Adoxa.This lineage is marked by herbaceous habit, reduction in the number of perianth parts,nectaries of mul- ticellular hairs on the perianth,and bifid stamens. The clade including Morinaceae,Valerianaceae, Triplostegia, and Dipsacaceae is here named Valerina. Probable synapomorphies include herbaceousness,presence of an epi- calyx (lost or modified in Valerianaceae), reduced endosperm,and distinctive chemistry, including production of monoterpenoids. The clade containing Valerina plus Linnaeeae we name Linnina. This lineage is distinguished by reduction to four (or fewer) stamens, by abortion of two of the three carpels,and possibly by supernumerary inflorescences bracts. Allium Paradoxum (M.Bieb.) G. Don (Amaryllidaceae) – a New Invasive Plant Species for the Flora of Baltic States

Don – a new invasive plant species for the flora of Baltic States.Acta Biol. Univ. Daugavp., 20 (1): 55 – 60. Allium paradoxum (M. Bieb.) G. Don was recorded as a new species for the flora of Latvia and the Baltic States on the basis of plant material first collected by A. Bojāre and P. Evarts-Bunders in 2020. Relatively large population of this species was found in Rīga, in the Rumbula district (Eastern border of the city), on the slope of the river Daugava covered by natural vegetation, but near the private gardens zone and ruderal places. This species can be easily distinguished from other Allium species by one flat, 5-25 mm wide, keeled leaf per bulb, inflorescence with several bulbils and mostly with only one flower. The species is considered as invasive and spreading by means of bulbils. In Latvia the species has been identified in their typical habitat – disturbed forest and shrubland along the riverbank on damp soil. Chapter In Vitro Propagation of Digitalis trojana Ivanina., an Endemic Medicinal Plant of Turkey Nurşen Çördük and Cüneyt Aki Abstract Digitalis trojana Ivanina is a member of the Plantaginaceae family and known by its common name, Helen of Troy foxglove. It is perennial endemic to Çanakkale and Balıkesir, northwestern Turkey. In order to develop an efficient shoot regen- eration protocol, the leaf explants of D. trojana were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 6-benzyl adenine (0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 mg/L) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 mg/L), 3% (w/v) sucrose and 0.8% (w/v) agar. The highest number of regenerated shoots was obtained from leaf explants that were cultured on MS medium with 3.0 mg/L BA+0.1 mg/L NAA. Regenerated shoots were rooted on MS medium without plant growth regulators. Rooted plants (2–3 cm) were separately transferred to pots containing a mixture of peat and perlite (2:1 v/v) and acclimatized successfully in a growth chamber. Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection.
