William Preston and the Revolutionary Settlement BY RICHARD OSBORN Patriot (1775-1778) Revolutions ultimately conclude with a large scale resolution in the major political, social, and economic issues raised by the upheaval. During the final two years of the American Revolution, William Preston struggled to anticipate and participate in the emerging American regime. For Preston, the American Revolution involved two challenges--Indians and Loyalists. The outcome of his struggles with both groups would help determine the results of the Revolution in Virginia. If Preston could keep the various Indian tribes subdued with minimal help from the rest of Virginia, then more Virginians would be free to join the American armies fighting the English. But if he was unsuccessful, Virginia would have to divert resources and manpower away from the broader colonial effort to its own protection. The other challenge represented an internal one. A large number of Loyalist neighbors continually tested Preston's abilities to forge a unified government on the frontier which could, in turn, challenge the Indians effectivel y and the British, if they brought the war to Virginia. In these struggles, he even had to prove he was a Patriot. Preston clearly placed his allegiance with the revolutionary movement when he joined with other freeholders from Fincastle County on January 20, 1775 to organize their local county committee in response to requests by the Continental Congress that such committees be established.

HARDIN Frankfort, Kentucky During the persecution of Protestants in Scotland, William Brown and his wife fled and settled near Londonderry, in Ireland, where they had two sons, William and James. James married Jennett Stevenson, by whom he had seven sons, with­ out a daughter, to wit: William, Samuel (who died early), Samuel, David, Alexander, Benjamin, and John. Of these Samuel, Alexander, Benjamin, and John emigrated to America. John was the only son who obtained a profession, that of a divine, which he pursued with laborous zeal for upwards of fifty years.’ Rev. John‘ Brown was eminently distinguished for many years, both in Virginia and Kentucky, as a Presbyterian minister of piety and talents. He was a graduate of Nassau Hall, Princeton, in 1749, and a licentiate of the New Castle Pres­ bytery, which, along with the New Brunswick and New York presbyteries, supplied missionaries to the Timber Ridge neigh­ borhood of Augusta County, Virginia. In 1753 the Timber Ridge congregation united with that of New Providence in presenting a call through the Presbytery to Rev. Brown, who had visited the frontier and was willing to cast his lot among them? Consequently, at the age of twenty-five, he became their first pastor.

Torkelsen 2018 Abstract Although notably modest in size compared to its European counterparts, the United States Army was still acutely aware of the technological and tactical developments occurring overseas in the decades prior to the First World War. Nonetheless, in the years 1914-17, US military planners were stubbornly reluctant to accept the extraordinary innovations then taking place on the battlefields of Europe. Worse still, when the United States finally did enter the war, the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in France resisted adopting the techniques and tactics of their allies, developed in battle at such great cost. Instead, the U.S. Army’s Field Service Regulations clung to a vision of lines of riflemen, advancing in open order, overcoming all resistance with controlled rifle fire followed-up with the bayonet. Trained in such outmoded and linear tactics (“open warfare”, as Pershing called it), the American troops fighting in France needlessly suffered heavy losses. This, despite the fact that the American army possessed a modern general staff, numerous service schools and journals, military attachés and observers the world over.     Letitia Preston Floyd’s “My Dear Rush” Letter Jim Glanville and Ryan Mays Copyright 2016 Introduction The present authors gave a sketch of Letitia Preston Floyd (1779– 1852) in the previous volume of the Smithfield Review.1 As background for the reader of this article, it may be briefly reiterated that Letitia Preston Floyd was born on the Virginia frontier in the newly created Montgomery County. Her parents were the Scotch-Irish immigrant William Preston of Augusta County and Susanna Smith of Hanover County. In 1804 she married John Floyd in Kentucky and went on to become a plantation owner, the mother of twelve children (seven of whom survived to adulthood and marriage), and the First Lady of Virginia. The “My Dear Rush” letter is a 32-page manuscript written by Mrs. Floyd dated February 22, 1843. The authors of this article discovered the original copy of this document in January 2014 (after its being closely held within the Preston family for 161 years and ten further years in a Smithfield closet) in a storage box at the Smithfield Plantation.2 The manuscript is in the form of a letter to her son Benjamin Rush Floyd and because of its opening salutation is referred to as the “My Dear Rush” letter. The letter was written at her home on the Cavan estate in Burke’s Garden in Tazewell County, Virginia, at the instigation of the historian Lyman Draper.3 The letter is in Mrs. Floyd’s own hand and records many things that can be found nowhere else in the historical record.

A. 1872-1948 BY MARY VERI-IOEFF Louisville, Kefitucky Maior General Preston Brown, retired United States Army officer, died June 30, 1948, after a brief illness at his home in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. His body was brought to Louisville for services, held Monday, July 5, at the family lot in Cave Hill Cemetery. General Brown was bona in Lexington, Kentucky, January 2, 1872. His father, John Mason Brown, was a son of Judge Mason Brown, of Frankfort. His mother, Mary Owen Preston Brown, was the daughter of General William Preston and his wife, Margaret Wicklfffe Preston, of Lexington. The family moved to Louisville in 1873, and their home was for years a center of gracious hospitality. Young Brown was prepared for college in Louisville by his father and at Professor Jason W. Chenault's school. Following his father's example, he graduated from Yale, receiving an A.B. degree in 1892, at the age of twenty. Later, the honorary de- gree of M.A. was conferred upon him by his Alma Mater and an LL.D. by Trinity College, Hartford. After graduating at Yale he attended the University of Virginia Law School, finish- ing his legal training in one year, and was admitted to the bar in Virginia and Kentucky. He also practiced his profession for a year in Long Island, and was sent by his firm, for work on a law encyclopedia, to California where in 1894 he enlisted in "the •rmy as a private at the United States Presidio Barracks near San Francisco.
