THE SANTISSIMA ANNUNZIATA OF FLORENCE, MEDICI PORTRAITS, AND THE COUNTER REFORMATION IN ITALY by Bernice Ida Maria Iarocci A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Bernice Iarocci 2015 THE SANTISSIMA ANNUNZIATA OF FLORENCE, MEDICI PORTRAITS, AND THE COUNTER REFORMATION IN ITALY Bernice Ida Maria Iarocci Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto 2015 A defining feature of the Counter-Reformation period is the new impetus given to the material expression of devotion to sacred images and relics. There are nonetheless few scholarly studies that look deeply into the shrines of venerated images, as they were renovated or decorated anew during this period. This dissertation investigates an image cult that experienced a particularly rich elaboration during the Counter-Reformation – that of the miracle-working fresco called the Nunziata, located in the Servite church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence. By the end of the fifteenth century, the Nunziata had become the primary sacred image in the city of Florence and one of the most venerated Marian cults in Italy. My investigation spans around 1580 to 1650, and includes texts related to the sacred fresco, copies made after it, votives, and other additions made within and around its shrine. I address various components of the cult that carry meanings of civic importance; nonetheless, one of its crucial characteristics is that it partook of general agendas belonging to the Counter- Reformation movement. That is, it would be myopic to remain within a strictly local scope when considering this period. -

Medici a, * a Department of Architecture, University of Ferrara, Italy - (federico.ferrari, marco.medici)@unife.it Commission II KEY WORDS: 3D survey, laser scanner, Leon Battista Alberti ABSTRACT: Since 2005, DIAPReM Centre of the Department of Architecture of the University of Ferrara, in collaboration with the “Centro Studi Leon Battista Alberti” Foundation and the Consorzio Futuro in Ricerca, is carrying out a research project for the creation of 3D databases that could allow the development of a critical interpretation of Alberti’s architectural work. The project is primarily based on a common three-dimensional integrated survey methodology for the creation of a navigable multi- layered database. The research allows the possibility of reiterative metrical analysis, thanks to the use of a coherent data in order to check and validate hypothesis by researchers, art historians and scholars on Alberti’s architectural work. Coherently with this methodological framework, indeed, two case studies are explained in this paper: the church of San Sebastiano in Matua and The Church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence. Shaftel Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT CANTU, JENNIFER A., M.A., May 2018, Art History Paolo Veronese’s Annunciations Director of Thesis: Marilyn Bradshaw Paolo Caliari (1528-88), known as Veronese, painted more than a dozen Annunciations and yet, while monographs on the artist provide an overview of his religious paintings, these works are given little attention. My thesis attempts to fill in this gap in the literature. Considering the importance of the Annunciation to Renaissance Venice, I examine Veronese’s numerous paintings of the subject, a number far greater than that of other Venetian artists of his time based on the extant Venetian works focusing on this theme. Creating a catalog of Veronese’s Annunciations, the first catalog to consider all these works in relation to each other, has been central to my research. Based on compilation of the catalog, I propose that Veronese’s Scuola dei Mercanti Annunciation of 1578 became a model for a significant number of Annunciations made by Veronese and his shop in the years following 1578. The Ten Books of Architecture. • In Book I, Chapter 3, Paragraph 2 - Vitruvius states the requirements of architecture as: Durability - Convenience - Beauty • Other texts translate as: Firmness - Commodity - Delight Today, we might think of these requirements as: Structure - Program - Beauty of Design • The Humanist Philosophy of the Renaissance leads us to a rebirth of what are understood to be the architectural ideals of the Golden Age — that is the classical ideals of ancient Greece and Rome, or Classical Architecture. 2) Let’s try to define Classical Architecture :: Classicism — a definition — A system of architecture that is a logical and tectonic expression of, and a symbolic representation of, the craft of architecture and its construction method. The goal of classical architecture is to achieve physical, geometric, and optical perfection through the arrangement of the classical system. The parts of the classical system may be thought of as a language and its geometrical arrangement its syntax. The parts are embodied as proportional to each other, and the whole, in modular systems that achieves perfect symmetry or balance. Parts include columns, column bases and capitals, entablatures, pediments, etc. These parts are composed of even smaller parts such as the abacus, echinus, architrave, frieze, etc. • Classical Architecture began in the ancient Greek period and was continued by the Romans, although it changed over time as it was reinterpreted and expanded. 3) Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472) • Insecure because of his background, he produced many texts in an effort to prove his worth • Most enduring work, On the Art of Building (De re Aedificatoria) (day ray aye di-fi-ca-toria) - Alberti’s book was the first printed book on architecture (1485). -

Alberti's life was described in Giorgio Vasari's Vite de' più eccellenti pittori, scultori, e architettori or 'Lives of the most excellent painters, sculptors and architects'. Childhood and education An Italian humanist, Alberti is often seen as a model of the Renaissance "universal man".[3] He was born in Genoa, one of two illegitimate sons of a wealthy Florentine merchant, Lorenzo Alberti. Leon Battista's mother, Bianca Fieschi, was a Bolognese widow who died during an outbreak of bubonic plague. Like many other families, the Albertis had been expelled from their native city, Florence, by the republican government, run by the Albizzis. At the time of Leon Battista's birth, his father Lorenzo lived in Genoa, but the family soon moved to Venice, where Lorenzo ran the family bank with his brother. -

The thesis investigates how eloquence is embodied in the sequential repetition of the triumphal arch motif between inside and outside. This thesis it is based on extensive and critical review of historical and theoretical literature. It marks a close examination of Sant’Andrea and to lesser extent San Francesco in Rimini, revisiting key ideas, texts and words. The principal finding of the thesis is that Alberti’s concept of respondeo, as developed in De Re Aedificatoria is the key to understanding the triumphal arch motif and its repetition in the interior. The thesis also comprehensively outlines the variety of contexts in which repondeo can be understood. This term, correlated to the passing of time and to rhetorical-based Albertian terms as decorum and convenio, means a ‘sensitive suitability’ between parts. -

D’Arista All rights reserved 1 ABSTRACT Building Blocks of Power: The Architectural Commissions and Decorative Projects of the Pucci Family in the Renaissance Carla A. D’Arista This dissertation analyzes the dates and artistic provenance of key architectural and decorative projects commissioned by the Pucci family for their townhomes, villas, and palaces during the Renaissance. It identifies the family’s insistent identification with prestigious Renaissance architects and artisans as a key element in a political and social stratagem that took its cue from the humanist ethos cultivated by their political patrons, the Medici. Temporally, this study is bracketed on both ends of the Renaissance by architectural commissions related to the Pucci’s long-standing patronage of Santissima Annunziata, the most important pilgrimage church in Florence.
