Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

Page 1 1 of 1 DOCUMENT Advertising Age November 18, 1991 Blacks reveal TV loyalty SECTION: MEDIA; Media Works; Tracking Shares; Pg. 28 LENGTH: 537 words While overall ratings for the Big 3 networks continue to decline, a BBDO Worldwide analysis of data from Nielsen Media Research shows that blacks in the U.S. are watching network TV in record numbers. "Television Viewing Among Blacks" shows that TV viewing within black households is 48% higher than all other households. In 1990, black households viewed an average 69.8 hours of TV a week. Non-black households watched an average 47.1 hours. The three highest-rated prime-time series among black audiences are "A Different World," "The Cosby Show" and "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Nielsen said. All are on NBC and all feature blacks. "Advertisers and marketers are mainly concerned with age and income, and not race," said Doug Alligood, VP-special markets at BBDO, New York. "Advertisers and marketers target shows that have a broader appeal and can generate a large viewing audience." Mr. Alligood said this can have significant implications for general-market advertisers that also need to reach blacks. "If you are running a general ad campaign, you will underdeliver black consumers," he said. "If you can offset that delivery with those shows that they watch heavily, you will get a small composition vs. the overall audience." Hit shows -- such as ABC's "Roseanne" and CBS' "Murphy Brown" and "Designing Women" -- had lower ratings with black audiences than with the general population because "there is very little recognition that blacks exist" in those shows. -

At CU it is important that we maintain a positive family-friendly environment, while also pushing our athletes to be the best he/she can be. With many Grand Championships and National titles, we are no stranger to the winning formula. We are fortunate enough, at Cheers Unlimited, to have the most knowledgeable staff in Arkansas. Having over 100 years of combined experience, our staff understands how to progress athletes properly, while remaining safe. We believe adding all this together creates an atmosphere for kids to expand not only in their athleticism, but also as young adults. Tryout Information Our competitive All-star program offers a variety of teams ranging in ages and skill levels. This year we are offering two different tryouts dates and every athlete is required to attend one pre-tryout. The week of pre-tryouts, all athletes will have the opportunity to attend multiple level and age based clinics (dates below). These pre-tryout clinics will consist of learning all tryout material and cost $20 per pre-tryout session. Each athlete will learn a short routine that includes tumbling, jumps, and dance. Athletes will tryout alone and the tryout process is closed. Tryouts are NOT the time to be throwing a skill for the first time. -

Along with his accomplishments as an actor, Danson continues to receive much acclaim for his work as a longtime advocate for the sustainability of the world’s oceans. Ted Danson is known by most as the lovable bartender, Sam Malone, on the hit television series Cheers . Danson won two Emmys and three Golden Globes for his role on Cheers . After Cheers , Danson starred in the hit series Becker while appearing in a number of films, including Three Men and a Baby and Saving Private Ryan . Danson has continued to appear in a wide range of television shows and films, including Damages , Help Me Help You and Curb Your Enthusiasm . Danson is one the world’s most active and prominent champions for ocean conservation. In 1987, Danson started the American Oceans Campaign, which joined forces with Oceana in 2001 to create a greater global impact. In recognition of his work and tireless commitment, Oceana renamed its Ocean Hero Award the Ted Danson Ocean Hero Award in 2004, calling him “the ultimate ocean hero.” Today, Oceana is the largest organization in the world dedicated to ocean conservation, with more than 300,000 supporters in 150 countries. In 2006, Showboats International and International Seakeepers Society presented Danson with the Marine Conservation Award for his lifetime work in marine conservation. Danson also was honored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as its Environmental Hero. Danson lives in Los Angeles, CA, with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, and has four children.
