Moseley on Down display –29 March 2020 Moseley Square Glenelg. 10.00am—1.00pm

I have organised with Holdfast Bay council to hold our annual motorcycle display at Moseley Square from 10.00am to 1.00pm. All motorcycles need a cardboard or carpet mat under them to absorb any oil drops – and we clean up afterwards. Please advise me if you are attending and what bike you will display? We are supplied with 6 x parks for the Elizabeth Street Glenelg. If you need a car park – then I need to know. Brian FORTH.

What direction should I fit my split link? A split link should be installed with the closed end facing the direction of travel. The reason for this is so that if it hits a branch or stone that the link isn't popped off the chain. Flinders Ranges Run 2020 – Final Call I am seeking expressions of interest from club members who would like to join me for a few days of riding in the Flinders Ranges in April/May. Day rides would originate from our base at Alpana Station (5 kms south of Blinman) and run over a mix of dirt & bitumen roads. To date I have a few club members who have expressed an interest however I would like to hear from others to enable this to proceed. This is not an official club event. Please contact me ASAP if you would like more information. Thank you, Stephen Hooper (member #111) [email protected] or 0417 832 443.

2020 All British Day.

Ian Hese reported that is was a beautiful day in the hills. We are enjoying it with the Club display at the All British Day at Echunga. We didn't win the bike display this year, it went to the Triumph Club. BUT!!! My Douglas was judged best Motorbike of the Show.

Participants on paper were 19, but on the day the following attended, Owen Ian’s 1914 Douglas Greenfield 1974 Norton, expired the night before the event. Colin Behn 1953 AJS. Robert Elliott 1925 Norton 16h. Pat Vartuli 1952 AJS. Paul Vartuli 1955 Triumph Thunderbird. Robert Smyth 1930 AJS car. Paul Wahlsted 1951 Matchless. Ian Haywood 1952 Panther. Steve Cramp 1969 Triumph Trident and the winner on the day Ian Hese 1914 Douglas. Several members for personal reasons were unable to attend.

Rob Elliott wrote on social media the day before - is anyone riding up to Echunga to the club display at All British Day tomorrow from South? If so, I’ll be leaving from Blackwood around 9:00am if anyone would like to join me. PM me to discuss details - it won’t be a fast ride though, I’ll be on a 1925 Norton 16H. Or from East for that matter - Blackwood is pretty much on the way to Echunga, unless you want to be bored and go up the Freeway, and yes we did make it. I should mention that the ride to and from Echunga was great too. Took the back roads to get there, very scenic, only got lost once? (Ed, there were some harsh comments about the distance and ability if a Norton could make it?) Rob now in recovery mode after his epic cross country ride wrote—terrific outing for the club at All British Day at Echunga. Made even better by Ian Hese winning best motorcycle of the day. It was brilliant talking to Jeff Schaefer and Dean Govan about the history of my 1925 Norton 16H. Interesting addition to our display was Rob Smyth’s AJS car - got lots of interest, especially by folk who didn’t know the company made cars! Some days later, Rob relaxing over a cuppa of English Breakfast tea continue to rekindle his thoughts of his ride to and from the event—Had a very enjoyable day at All British Day last weekend. Not a Hondaha or Indian-Davidson to be seen! First long ride on the “new” 16H through the Adelaide Hills. The parts unaffected by the recent bushfires were still green and attractive - and steep and twisty in places. The 16H was an absolute delight to ride, the han- Rob’s Norton 16h dling and suspension were way better than I anticipated. The Sturmey gearbox was very smooth and easy to operate. The engine was also smooth and very useable, the torque of the engine was more than ample to cope with some pretty steep hills. It was very comfortable to ride too, no aches or pains after covering some pretty challenging terrain (at least for me and a twenties era machine). What a great bike! It is a beautiful restoration, but I'm afraid I can't take the credit this time! It was restored by a fellow club member in the early '70s by Jeff Schaefer.

Martyn Adams of MDA Engineering’s annual support of the All Brit Day had the unenviable duty to pick of the Most Desirable motorcycle of the day (lots of amazing machines to choose from) it came down to this 1914 Douglas in its original trim! I love that origi- nal junk! A cracking day had by all. Martyn Adams esq.

Thursday’s Hill’s ride. A beautiful day for a ride through the hills today. Started from the TTG Pub, morning coffee at the Amberlight at Lobethal. Meandered through Harrogate Callington to the lunch stop at Strathalbyn. Good to see a bit of green show- ing in the fire areas. Way home was via the Paris Creek road Meadows, Echunga, Verdun, Swamp and Fox Gully roads to then go our separate ways at Chain Of Ponds. Good scenery, good riding roads and great company, life Ian’s 1914 Douglas is good! Ian Hese tour guide?

Festival 0f Motorcycling organising committee. Ian Hese and Rob Elliott represented VVMCSA at this meeting. Another great meeting of the Festival of Motorcycling 2020 committee last Wednesday. The program is coming on well with more details soon. Meet & Greet Saturday 3rd October to open the show followed by 6 ride days Film Night and huge two day display at Hart's Mill with Cavalcade Parade along the coast on both Saturday & Sunday planned.

11th annual Kersbrook Tiddlers ride. Sunday’s ride from Kersbrook Soldiers Memorial grounds to Lyndoch and back was the 11th ride organised by Bob Gill in association with social committee of the Kersbrook combined sporting club ladies. 28 members and visitors gathered early in preparation for the ride with a majority trailering they machine to the start. There were 11 veteran and vintage bikes sand several later year bike and two mopeds a Malvern Starr and a NUS completed the run. The mopeds were times timed at about 35mph on a down hill run, a bit slower going up but both completed the task without any fuss. Along the journey several member struck problems like forgetting to fill the petrol tank and running out just short of Lyndoch, or another having the handle bar mount come loose and the handle car was in free- dom mood making control most difficult only to have his bike emit ungodly sounds from the motor by this time it was in his best interest to trailer it home. Then another filling up petrol for the return trip only to have his beast refuse to start for some 15 minutes. And the last was a members who’s brake block would for come loose and jamming itself on the brake rim and brining the bike to a sud- den had, it too was trailer home. In all weather was perfect, riding conditions perfect and the day ended with a great meal. Rob’s Norton 16h Tiddlers Ride 16th February 2020 Brett Mitchell wrote—Beautiful weather for a jaunt in the northern Adelaide Hills for our annual Tiddlers run. At least 6 Arnold DeGroot 1912 Rudge Solo veterans and a number of other pre WWII bikes. Well done to David Radloff 1912 P&M Solo the Club Captain Ian Hese. Hi Brian, that's a very early photo, probably taken around 1973, From the front Late Clem Evans on AJS, next bike Bob Jones’s Harley, the bike between the Harley and Indian is the late Fred Wilkinson's 1925 Norton, then our 1925 Indian Chief with me standing behind, the couple on outfit to right are Terry and Shirley Rowe on Raleigh. We bought the Chief in 1970 and I can see that the tank has been painted and I didn't finish the restoration until September 1974. Cheers—Dean Govan

Minlaton garage – Doug Gordon. Continuing on from Jake Cook story and photographs, a friend Doug Gordon supplied the following information.

In the early 1920s this building was The Harry Butler Aviation and Motor Engineering Garage and held the agency for Durant and Overland cars. Harry was a local hero from Yorketown, having served in the first World War as an RAF pilot. Back home in 1919 he used his Bristol monoplane to make the first airmail deliv- ery over water in the Southern Hemisphere. His "Red Devil" plane is now on permanent display at Minlaton. Later, this same building became Porter's General Motors car agency in the main street of Minlaton. I am guessing that the "Freeman & Dunnet" operation came before the Porter's GM agency. I also suspect that it was Jim Freeman's father who was somehow involved in this (Freeman Motors of Adelaide had vari- ous GM country agencies). After Robert Martin had moved on it became a Retravision Electrical and Appli- ance store. Currently #38 Main Road, Minlaton is a Choclaterie! Too bad the old facade is gone - it had much more character than it does now. This is where the Avro crashed, just out of town, when the engine seized. January1922. regards—Doug Gordon.

South Australia Police and Bullocks Bicycles

South Australian police were the first in Australia to introduce bicycle patrols in 1893. Bikes were used for patrols, enquiries and delivering summonses.

In the late 1910s and through to the early 1920s, they also were used to detect speeding motorists who went over the speed limit of 12 miles per hour. Some officers initially refused to ride bikes, preferring to walk South Australian foot police, at the Tor- instead. Others complained about the rough roads that forced rens Parade Ground in Adelaide, still pa- them to stop and relight the acetylene lamps on their bikes. trolling on bicycles in 1923. South Australian police in the 1890s employed a mechanic to Image courtesy State Library of South build and maintain the bicycle fleet. From that came a distinctive Australia police bicycle design with straight handlebars and a large seat. This model became standard issue for about 70 years.

By 1916, 100 bikes made up the police fleet for a force of 352 members. This rose to 133 in 1943 before use of bikes was phased out, except for special operations, from the 1950s.

Together with a general resurgence in cycling in South Australia, police bike patrols were brought back in 2000 to complement regular patrols. Bicycle patrols are used for high-visibility policing to detect and prevent crime and are deployed at special events.

More than 80 officers are qualified to ride the 30 bikes available across the four metropolitan districts and the public transport safety branch.

Information from aussievelos.net. Elliott Bicycles. Super Elliott bicycles brand has survived into the 21st Century, carrying the banner for Adelaide's strong tradition of cycle manufacturing started by Vivian Lewis in 1892 and taken up by John Bullock in the early 20th Century.

Lewis was soon running one of Adelaide city's largest cycle suppliers in the 1890s and Bullock's venture into cycle making and retailing saw him create Adelaide first chain of stores. Both Lewis and Bullock venture in- to assembling the earliest motors cars in Adelaide and both sold motor cycles. (Lewis is credited with as- sembling Adelaide's first motor cycle and motor car).

The Elliott brothers, Bertrand and Laurie, founded what later became Super Elliott, as a shop in Payneham in 1902. They also added motor cycles to their range. When the original partnership broke up, Victor Elliot joined the company that started a factory in Gawler Place, Adelaide, in the 1920s. it was later in that dec- ade, that Bertrand Elliott decided to discard the petrol-driven side of the business and concentrate on bicy- cles.

Two years after opening a shop in Rundle Street, Adelaide, the business became a limited company: chang- ing from Elliott Bros to Super Elliott.

The business was blessed with the technical talents of frame builders such as Claude Bushell, Len Edwards and Tom Robinson, painters Percy Kutcher, and frame enamellers Rex Hunter, Les Hall and Ray Greenslade.

This personal attention to frame building almost ended in the 1960s but Super Elliott survived the flood of imports in in the 1970s/80s, even developing its own in-store brand Pursuit, built by Wayne Roberts. The Elliot brothers' belief in bicycles was vindicated with their 21st Century revival.

Lewis bicycles.

Vivian Lewis and the Elliot brothers created businesses that made the most of South Australia’s cycling boom’s peak continuing at the entry of the 20th Century.

They made and imported bicycles and extended that to the emerging motor cycles. Lewis was the first to ex- pand into making motor cars and motor cycles. He built an empire that was taken over by Fred Mann in 1924 after Lewis’s death at 54 in 1919. The Lewis cycle works lasted until 1975.

From Victoria, Lewis started with Ormonde Bicycle Depot in Freeman Street (later Gawler Place), Adelaide, in 1896 to make and import cycles. Beyond the success of his roadster cycles, Lewis experimented with build- ing a six horsepower two-cylinder three-speed Lewis Motor Car.

Lewis took on the agency for the Talbot, the Swift, the Star, the All days, the Napier, the Daimler and the Minerva brands. He had branches in Port Pirie, Mount Gambier and Broken Hill.

At the 1913 Spring Show (later the Royal Show), his 3.5 horsepower water-cooled three-speed gear hub mo- tor cycle was popular and, by 1914, his motor cycles won every event except one and, in an Australasian first, set a 24-hour ride world record. Four machines completed an Adelaide-Melbourne reliability trial without losing a point.

After its takeover in 1925, the new Lewis Parking Station Ltd began importing Oldsmobile and Buick cars but still sold and made motorcycles, cycles and even wheelchairs until 1956.

Super Elliot was founded by Bertrand and Laurie Elliot in 1902 making cycles in a small Payneham shop where Laurie finished first in the SA League 25-mile road race to secure their position in the bicycle trade.

After extending to Norwood, the Elliot Brothers also added imported motor cycles to the bicycles offering. From 1908, the Elliott Bros were hosting their own one-mile scratch race at Payneham where they displayed and sold their range. This included a special cycle for road champion Charlie Baulderstone. In the 1920s, Vic Elliot joined brother Bertrand to continue the business as Elliott Bros with a store in Pirie Street, Adelaide, and later in a factory in Gawler Place.

Vic Elliott, who oversaw continued company growth and built the Super Elliott's brand, also recruited factory expertise to the factory, including Jack Wise and Frank Duckett who were top grade speedway motorcyclists.

Beside a partnership with BSA Birmingham, Elliott Bros bicycles benefited from technical talents such as Claude Bushell, Len Edwards, Tom Robinson, Percy Kutcher and Bert Standish.

Super Elliott Cycles at 200 Rundle Street, Ad- elaide, is still one of Adelaide's leading bike retail stores.

. BIRDWOOD FIGURE 8—10 am MARCH 15th 2020.

The Annual Figure of 8 ride is on again already!

As per usual it will start and finish at the National Motor Museum at Birdwood leaving 10.00am..

Please enter the Grounds through the gate off Blundel Rd. (Adelaide side of the Museum Grounds). There will be no charge for entrance this year. For those trailering their machines there is plenty of parking inside.

This year we are breaking from the previous morning and afternoon style rides. The ride will be only one loop, in a figure 8 shape of course, with a morning tea stop. This will bring us back to the Museum early afternoon so as you can enjoy your lunch, picnic or from the shops across the road, on the lawns. The Museum Staff will judge the bikes at this time for their Annual Trophy. This will then leave the rest of the afternoon free to leisurely inspect the exhibits inside.

As can be seen from the map we head south from Birdwood, via Woodside to Oakbank where we then go up Oakwood Rd. There is a climb up this road which may challenge some lower powered bikes. If you are con- cerned you may turn right at the roundabout before Woodside and go straight to Lobethal to turn right into the main street to stop at the Amberlight Café. This will give plenty of time to get your morning tea before the mob arrive.

After the break we will head back through to Mt Torrens, the outskirts of Mt Pleasant, Cricks Mill Rd back to Birdwood. We will be riding through some of the recent regenerating fire zone, as well as scenic areas. Apart from the climb mentioned most of roads are flat to undulating hills. There are some major roads, most of which are 80kph limits.

The total distance for the ride is approx. 90kms so please make sure you have sufficient fuel before the start.

Looking for someone to do recovery trailer duties, with the usual $60 towards fuel, as well as Ian corner marshals. Please contact me to volunteer.

See you there and enjoy the day.

Ian Hese. Ride Leader.
