No-one else had that liquid style and the octave leaps and the whammy bar and the rest of it... 2) As far as I know, your first collaboration with Allan was a demo for Virgin of "The Abingdon Chasp" in, I think, the summer of 1976, alongside Dave Stewart, Francis Moze and Ray Warleigh. Is this true? Do you remember playing/recording more tracks? Just Allan's compositions? Was this the first time you ever played together? Did that session leave you a strong impression, an inkling that Allan and yourself could form a strong musical partnership ? In this essay, I will explore some of its early origins as an instrument and briefly look at some of the significant early guitar players of the 18 th and 19 th century who had an impact on later developments in jazz guitar. Moving into the early part of the 20 th century, I will also explore some of the influential non-classical guitarists who influenced the acceptance of the guitar as a viable jazz instrument, and lastly I will explore the importance of the invention of the electric guitar an look at some of the less well known but very important jazz guitarists of the 20 th century. Some insight into the origins of the guitar The guitar was invented many centuries ago in Spain as a predecessor of older Middle-Eastern stringed instruments such as the Zither, and the Lyre. The original Soft Machine contained, in various combinations over the next decade, such notable members of the British pop-jazz avant garde as bassist/composer Kevin Ayers, singer/drummer Robert Wyatt, singer-songwriter Daevid Allen, keyboardist Michael Ratledge, bassist Hugh Hopper, drummer John Marshall, sax players Elton Dean and Karl Jenkins and guitarists Allan Holdsworth and John Etheridge. The four-piece revival called Soft Machine Legacy - Hopper, Etheridge, Marshall and Dean - manages to evoke much of the progressive spirit of the original band and the heady era that spawned it in the live concert DVD, Soft Machine Legacy, shot last December at the venerable Paris concert club New Morning, only a few weeks before Dean passed away.
