Livereview: Whitesnake - Kharma 16. Man durfte also ge- spannt sein!

our first show at an Amherst youth center. Scott Helland’s brother Eric’s band Mace played; they became The Outpatients. Our first Boston show was with DYS, The Mighty COs and The AMERICA’S HARDCORE FU’s. It was very intense for us. We were so intimidated. Future generations will fuck up again THE OUTPATIENTS got started in 1982 by Deep Wound bassist Scott Helland At least we can try and change the one we’re in and his older brother Eric “Vis” Helland, guitarist/vocalist of Mace — a 1980-82 — Deep Wound, “Deep Wound” Metal group that played like Motörhead but dug Black Flag (a rare blend back then). The Outpatients opened for bands like EAST COAST Black Flag, Hüsker Dü and SSD. Flipside called ’em “one of the most brutalizing live bands In 1980, over-with small cities and run-down mill towns across the Northeast from the period.” 1983’s gnarly Basement Tape teemed with bored kids with nothing to do. Punk of any kind earned a cultural demo included credits that read: “Play loud in death sentence in the land of stiff upper-lipped Yanks. That cultural isolation math class.” became the impetus for a few notable local Hardcore scenes. CANCEROUS GROWTH started in 1982 in drummer Charlie Infection’s Burlington, WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS MA bedroom, and quickly spread across New had an active early-80s scene of England. They played on a few comps then 100 or so inspired kids. It’s a word that was used to describe a number chains of different “alternative” bands from the region in 1980s, and then also into the 1990s with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees. The first noted instance of referring to a Seattle band as “grunge,” was in a 1981 letter by Mark Arm, according to Clark Humphrey in his account of the Seattle music scene, Loser. pearl jam Bruce Pavitt later claimed to have popularized the term as a musical label in 1987, when he wrote some promotional copy for Green River, describing the band as “ultra-loose grunge that destroyed the morals of a generation”. In the late 80s, “grunge” did actually define a sound – high levels of distortion, feedback, fuzz effects, a fusion of punk and metal influences. Many of these bands were on either the C/Z or Sub Pop record labels. Jack Endino, the so-called “Godfather of Grunge” recorded Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Green River, Nirvana and Blood Circus between 1984 and 1989.

Jadranka Zlomislić Osijek, 2014. Korać 2 Abstract This paper explores grunge, a music genre that developed in Seattle, Washington during the 1990s. The aim is to show how grunge contributed to changes primarily in the American society as it moved from underground to mainstream and became a primary pop cultural movement in the 90s. It also became a subculture which has its special characteristics like a certain way of dressing, behaving etc. The paper follows the evolution of grunge from its beginning in the 1980s. Thanks to Sub Pop, an independent record label, and its creators Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt and their sense for business and self-promotion, grunge moved from underground to mainstream at the beginning of the 1990s with Nirvana’s album Nevermind as a landmark and their single “Smells like Teen Spirit” as the anthem of the Generation X. Furthermore, the paper explores how musicians engaged in different aspects of society like politics, campaigning and activism and how grunge became an essential part of fashion statements and different forms of art such as movies.

Rachel Flotard (RF): Yes, I consent to this interview. NN: Okay, can you please introduce yourself? RF: My name is Rachel Flotard and, uh, I’m a thirty-eight-year-old female that lives in Seattle, WA. NN: How would you describe the music community you are a part of? RF: How long is your tape? [laughter] Um, how would I describe the music community as a very healthy and good one here in Seattle. NN: Can you talk a bit about where you were born and, um, how that connects to your musical experience? RF: I was born in 1972 in Englewood, New Jersey and I grew up in a little town called Closter, which is about twenty-five minutes from midtown Manhattan. And I grew up there for twenty-five years before I moved to Seattle, but New Jersey and the east coast plays, I think, a big part of who I am. Uh… [laughter] Seemingly my, uh, my love of New Jersey accents. Um, my love of New York City, my love of, um- [pause] I don’t know I have to say the accent’s pretty much first and foremost [laugh]. Um, how-how growing up in New Jersey affected any music… Um, all of my formative musical, uh, moments happened whether in the car with my mother and father, um, or at a birthday party or at a jukebox, I mean that’s where I started to, you know, for whatever reason like a lot of kids just really gravitate towards songs and at that time, I mean, by the time I could really, you know, go and buy my own cassette tape, which is what was available to me other than vinyl which I was too young to handle.
