United Nations Holds First Ever Conference On Renewable Energy BY PAUL MCGINNISS. PHOTOS BY ODALYS MORENO

Considering the explosion of green and renewable activities around the globe, it came as a surprise to learn that the Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization (IREO) conference at the United Nations on June 11th was the first UN conference ever about renewable energy. Surely, the U.N. needs the IREO, as many of the world’s problems revolve around or emanate from energy issues like pollution from power plants, oil spills, mining uranium and coal, and especially the lack of access to basic energy and electricity for billions of people across the globe.

The IREO was founded by its Secretary General, Robson Mello, in response to the need for global renewable energy solutions. Clearly, if the billions of people without even the basic services begin to power themselves with non renewable sources, as developed countries have done in the past, Microfinance Solar Energy the world is headed fast for insurmountable Play | Stop | << Previous | Next >> problems. With this in mind, the IREO Empowers Charity Image 1 of 3 supports programs that promote Josh Tickell of Fuel with actress Gloria Reuben conservation and works to build international alliances that support Join us in Helping Relieve emerging sustainable technologies, with a focus on facilitating the transition from carbon based enabling the Poverty Though energy sources to renewable sources, particularly in developing nations. poorest of the The Provision of poor to improve Solar Energy. There’s a huge discrepancy between the easy access to energy in countries like America, their own lives Join Us! energy that many of us have taken for granted until recently, and the lack of energy access in many other countries. The IREO intends to bridge this energy gap between first and third world countries – enabling countries to learn from each other’s solutions and mistakes, and develop a mutually sustainable world in the process

Last year, the IREO held the first annual Renewable Energy Awards gala which honored individuals and organizations who are leaders in advancing global alternative energy solutions. Luckily, this year’s second annual IREO Awards gala was coupled with the full day conference and another conference is being planned for 2010 to precede the third annual awards ceremony. Public Service Ads by Public Service Ads by Granted, it was exciting to see the paparazzi attracting celebrities like L’il Kim, Wyclef Jean, Google Google Tony Goldwyn, Gloria Reuben and Matthew Modine at the Awards gala in the evening. But, the IREO event this year became all the more interesting and important because it was coupled with the more serious and academic conference during the day. The conference was more like a symposium you’d go to at a University or International Research Center or Science Academy than a Hollywood on the Hudson event, albeit with a sprinkling of TV and film personalities in the audience, like Titanic actor Billy Zane who wore a pin striped suit and blended in with the rest of the crowd. Also soaking in the info was Darren Moore the "Eco - MacGyver and co host on Adrian Grenier's Planet Green show “Alter Eco”.

The conference included a mix of ambassadors, diplomatic representatives, eminent scientists, renewable energy experts and business leaders - all gathering with the goal of bringing affordable, renewable energy technology to countries across the world.

Admittedly, the cocktail party and awards dinner in the United Nations delegate dining room that night was a welcome respite from the heavy save-the-world issues discussed during the day. While deliberately avoiding the paparazzi in the red carpet area - This writer didn’t mind the fun of having a glass of wine while talking to the likes of the Jordanian ambassador about renewable initiatives in the Middle East or making connections with someone from the Brazilian consulate to find out more about what was going on in South America.

Robson Mello, is breaking new ground for the UN with the establishment of the IREO. He has established the Brazilian Foundation of America, (BFA) a nonprofit organization that assists both Brazilian Americans and immigrants living in Long Island, and the tri-state area. The BFA also works in Brazil and focuses on underprivileged communities in northeast Brazil. In 2006, the BFA started its first renewable energy project in Fortaleza, Brazil. The project educated the people of Fortaleza to recycle their fried oil into bar soap for both personal use and for a secondary income. This project led to the creation of the IREO. Currently, the IREO and the BFA are expanding the project to build a refinery in Fortaleza. The project will benefit nine underprivileged communities in the city, reaching an estimated 3,000 people.

Here are some highlights from the IREO Conference:

*Scientist Dr. Arthur Nozik, of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, said that the sun provides enough potential energy to power the world for an entire year in 1 1/2 hours. He spoke about solar photochemistry developments that will use the sun to make things like methane and hydrogen, making us aware that solar photo voltaics will just be one part of the solar energy equation in the future.

*Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, of Sulabh International in India, spoke about his amazing from Human waste system which takes human waste that would otherwise end up polluting water and turns it into a fuel source (methane) that can be used for cooking, lamps, electricity generating and space heating. This incredible system solves a real waste problem, essentially creating free energy. I thought even communities in the U.S. should consider these systems: as little as 300 people are needed to make the system viable.

*Dr. Daniel Nocera from MIT said in his presentation: “Corn Ethanol is absolutely worthless. I won't even go there." But, he also said that he thinks that Hydrogen is a method of hope and is working on a home based solar powered hydrogen generation system that generates electricity and power for the home as well as for EV's and plug in Hybrids. (Like the system at Worldsnest in New Mexico which I have reported on before).

Josh Tickell, director and genesis of the excellent film Fuel gave one of the more inspiring talks and said "We are on the cusp of the most exciting revolution in human history.” Watch the film if you have not already.

John Paul DeJoria, Owner of Paul Mitchell Systems, Patron, and Sun King Solar spoke passionately as well. He was way ahead of the curve on renewable energy having installed solar panels on his house in Hawaii over 20 years ago. DeJoria was one of the producers of Fuel and he told the audience to watch out for the thin film PV that will be coming out from Sun King Solar in California for as lows as $2 per watt.

*The founders of EcoloBlue, makers of an atmospheric water generator were on hand with a space aged device that can take water out of the air and also purify water from any source of any contaminants. I’ll be writing about this product in New York House magazine in the coming months. EcoloBlue also makes biodegradable plastic bottles so you can fill them with the water from their atmospheric water generator and not have to worry about using water bottles that harm the planet.

*Last, but not least, I'd like to mention Claire Smith, who I first met at the X Prize i2i (Incentive to Innovate) conference at the UN,which is making impressive strides to make the whole country carbon neutral. Claire talked about the Scottish Government’s Saltire Prize: a competition open to the whole world that will award a ten million pound prize to whomever invents the best means to capture wave and tidal power off the coast of Scotland. Look for more news about this on MetroGreenBusiness.com and in later reports from NewYorkHouseMagazine.com

Enter email address As an on-air and online host, I’ve had some pretty incredible experiences, like drinking milk from a cloned cow in Wisconsin, liberating anime ‘otaku’ from their apartments in Tokyo and reporting from a space station dressed as a….oh, never mind. But last month I got to do something extra special: report on the future of renewable energy at the United Nations in New York.

With energy at the core of our global warming woes, the timing was impeccable for the inaugural IREO Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization conference. The caliber of speakers was exceptional. Experts from UN member states and leaders in business and academia came together with the aim of finding practical, sustainable energy solutions for the developing world.

Highlights included Dr Nocera from MIT’s cutting edge research into hydrogen production with the potential to transform solar into a mainstream energy source. HRH Prince Malik ado Ibrahim of Nigeria showcased a low-cost hybrid solar solution which could bring electricity to the 3 billion people on our planet currently without it, with huge implications for vaccines and literacy.

Sanitation guru, Dr Pathak, shared his pioneering and highly original work in transforming human waste into bio-gas for heating, cooking, and generating electricity. While filmmaker Josh Tickell encapsulated the renewable energy movement with a clip from his award winning documentary, Fuel.

Actor, IREO media committee member and renewable energy groupie, Billy Zane, was also present. Here he talks about whether the developing world could overtake the developed world when it comes to adopting renewable energy. All in all, a mind expanding day in the life of a humble host.

Sarah Backhouse hosts Hype to Habit for Causecast / Creative Citizen, she is Current Affairs Editor of Coco Eco Magazine and is a member of the IREO media committee.

NREL Newsroom Home Printable Version Feature News News Release NR-1609 News Releases Science & Technology News Nozik wins UN science and technology prize for solar research Events June 11, 2009 Construction Update Senior Research Fellow Arthur J. Nozik of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has won the 2009 Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization (IREO) Award for Science and Technology. IREO is a new international organization related to the United Nations.

The IREO/UN award recognizes energy innovators who are "leading the way of global development through renewable energy, with the strength to challenge conventional wisdom and encourage critical thinking."

Dr. Nozik will receive his prize in a June 11th ceremony and reception at the UN in New York City. Prior to the evening gala, Dr. Nozik will deliver the keynote address at an IREO renewable energy conference.

"The present energy crisis and the related problem of severe global climate change associated with the accelerating use of fossil fuels to supply the world’s growing energy demands cannot be addressed and timely solutions obtained without major international research and development efforts to produce low-cost carbon-free or carbon-neutral energy, new energy policies and strategies, and intergovernmental cooperation and coordination," Dr. Nozik said. "The formation of the Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization is an important international step forward toward achieving these critical objectives."

Dr. Nozik and his NREL colleagues have proposed and confirmed several new important concepts in photoelectrochemistry and solar photoconversion that may help revolutionize advanced solar energy research. He and his research colleagues specialize in working with semiconductor nanocrystals, such as silicon and other semiconducting materials a billionth of a meter in size – also known as quantum dots. They operate in a much larger portion of the light spectrum than what is used by conventional photovoltaic cells and can produce several electrons from one absorbed photon of sunlight. This process, known as multiple exciton generation (MEG), has the potential to markedly increase the efficiency of solar cells. For more on this research, visit http://www.nrel.gov/basic_sciences/technology.cfm/tech=14

Ultimately, the goal of Dr. Nozik and his NREL team is to directly convert the sun's energy into electricity and fuels at a cost equivalent to or lower than the cost of coal. This would make the large-scale use of clean and carbon-free solar power more affordable, particularly in developing countries where energy demands are soaring.

"We must extend the frontiers of basic scientific knowledge to develop a new generation of renewable energy technologies," said NREL director Dr. Dan Arizu. "The IREO/UN Prize affirms that Dr. Nozik's research is fundamental to protecting the climate and establishing a clean energy economy."

The IREO Award is the second international prize Dr. Nozik has received in the past year. In 2008 he was awarded the Eni Award by the President of Italy.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Sulabh's Bindeshwar Pathak receives UN award 12 Jun 2009, 1244 hrs IST, PTI

UNITED NATIONS: Bindeshwar Pathak, Sulabh International founder, on Friday received the prestigious Renewable Energy Award of the United Nations at its headquarters in New York for developing low cost toilet technology to produce energy out of human waste.

Pathak received the award from well known American Actor Darren Moore at a gala function organised by Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization (IREO), having de facto status within United Nations. Large number of actors, ambassadors and technical experts were present on the occasion.

Modeled on the Nobel Prize, this annual awards ceremony draws attention to future energy issues which constitute some of the most urgent challenges facing the world's leaders today.

These awards recognize the achievements of individuals and institutions in response to the crisis of climate change and sustainable global energy resources.

While accepting this award, Pathak said this kind of honour at UN is giving global recognition and acceptance to ideas and efforts of Sulabh which otherwise would have remained buried without being replicated and being of any use for the benefit of society.

"The award will spur the organisation to strive to render service with greater zeal in the field of sanitation, particularly recycling of human waste," Pathak said.

The Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization (IREO) held its 2nd annual Energy Awards Gala at the UN last night, in recognition of upstanding individuals’ commitment to “challenge conventional wisdom and encourage critical thinking to create positive reform.” The mission of the IREO is to provide an international platform upon which the most influential individuals in the world, from all sectors, can meet. Hopefully, long-term relationships will be formed and framed around the pursuit of creating a completely sustainable world. This mission statement appears ambitious, and the copious amount of red tape encountered just getting in to the UN reminded me of the trials and terrors of bureaucracy. Have you ever visited the UN? I am now savvy to the etiquette of passing through the Visitor’s Center—take my hand and let me show you. Got it? Good. Now let go, because going through the metal detectors you are going to beep and, after passing through about 3 times, they will ask you to raise your hands above your head and walk through again. I still beeped at this point, but this time my posture, with hands ridiculously brushing the plastic cover of the staple-shaped detector and skirt all the much shorter for it, I was nodded through. One woman in front just squeaked in as well, chandelier earrings swaying wildly as she struggled to maintain balance atop six-inch heels, with thick, shiny diamond cuffs weighing down her outstretched arms. We were in.

The United Nations is a beautiful place, displaying the pomp and circumstance of kings, presidents, and the wonderfully entitled Goodwill Ambassadors—as if there were any other kind! This evening the main, marble-ensconced foyer hosted two tables, one for coat check and one for sign-in. After discovering that the press tags were double-sided, I hastily took the one with scallywagandvagabond.com on the one side and left a Mr. Matthew McDermott of PlanetGreen.com, featured on the other, to his own devices. Sorry, Matt, you may or may not have missed a good party! Now to the accolades, of which there are many.

Ascending the cool escalator to the second floor, because the elevator does not deign to come to ground level, I admired the myriad art and sculpture adorning the walls, all appearing to stand upright, to shine a bit brighter this evening in silent entreaty—“great things are accomplished here,” they whispered, “so come on in and have a Patron mojito (courtesy of John Paul de Joria, Goodwill Ambassador and owner of Paul Mitchell System, Patron and Sun King Solar), but don’t forget to read the nameplate. We are all here for some reason or another.”

By Natalie Fasano • Jun 12th, 2009 • Category: Nightlights

Did you know that the United Nations is not only an internationally recognized venue for fostering and repairing international relations, but it is also a great place to throw a party? The outdoor terrace rivals the best of New York City’s “it” locales, and its popularity doesn’t wax and wane with the same mundanity—as Billy Zane, of who we will return to in a moment, so rightly said: “It’s the UN, come on!” Yes, Billy Zane, it is. And I will. Standing on the terrace I contemplated the major talent that was to arrive this evening. Yes, Lil’ Kim and Wyclef were due to appear at some point, but the real headliners were the award recipients. Dr. Daniel G. Nocera, one of the “Time 100” in 2009 and MIT professor received the prestigious Science and Technology Award, along with accredited Dr. Arthur Nozik, of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Boulder, CO and recipient of the 2008 ENI Award. Prince Malik Ido Adbrahim of Nigeria received the Best Practices Award as an investor in Solar Technology for the developing world. (Side note: did you know that Kenya has the world’s highest rate of solar ownership per household? Neither did I.) Though I cannot name all of the award recipients, allow me to feature one more individual deserving of recognition: Nikos Spirdakis. This 11 year old Junior Goodwill Ambassador, and Director of Climate Change PSA entitled “Save It,” is a welcome leader in the future of renewable energy and sustainability. Inspired at the gas station, Nikos paralleled the dull beeps at the fueling station to those of a hospital heart monitor. When it comes to energy use and disposal, we are all on the precipice of cardiac arrest. If an 11-year old can comprehend the disastrous implications of inaction, can we now hope that heads of state, with the ultimate power to effect rapid and necessary change, will as well?

Billy Zane thinks so. As co-chairman of the Green Media and Entertainment Committee, Billy is lending his celebrity status and clout to the promotion of a necessary cause. Looking debonair as usual, all eyes were on him from the moment he sauntered onto the terrace. None came for the weather, and the fog clung to the corners of the sharp edges, offering no respite for reflection, for a momentary survey of the silent skyline. Instead, all sought comfort in the moment, in the hope that the IREO and its representatives were on to something. “This event is an outstanding showing of member states for the renewable energy initiative,” explained Mr. Zane. “Diverse members of the private sector are also involved, from scientists to financial institutions,” he replied with collected and wonderful gravity. When asked if he will stick around for the 3rd, 4th and 5th annual Galas, Billy replied, “I’m in it babe, we’re in deep.” Anything else, I asked? “Yes,” he said, “you can scratch the babe.” No, Billy Zane, we can’t. Thanks so much for your kind words about my son, Nikos Spiridakis! I am extremely proud of his determination to get his PSA made. He inspired so many, including myself to help get his message out. I appreciate that that Robson Mello the Secretary-General made Nikos a Jr. Goodwill Ambassador. If it weren’t for his offer. I would not have known about the IREO, let alone end up getting to work for this wonderful organization.

Nikos Spiridakis, the 11 year old director of this PSA, was honored with the status of UN Junior Goodwill Ambassador

Last Thursday evening at the United Nations several renewable energy luminaries—and some TreeHugger favorites—were honored at the IREO Renewable Energy Awards. That's the Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization, for those needing some deciphering of the alphabet soup. At the gala event the following people were honored:

Science & Technology Award Receiving Science and Technology Awards were: Dr Arthur J. Nozik, Senior Research Fellow Scientific Director of the Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the University of Colorado, Boulder; and, Dr Daniel Nocera of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Frequent TreeHugger readers may remember Dr Nocera from his announcement last summer of making a serious breakthrough in the production of hydrogen, with some serious implication for the future of fuel cells and renewable energy.

NGO Award The NGO Award went to the Sulabh International Social Service Organization for their promotion of "human rights, environmental sanitation, health and hygiene, non-conventional source of energy, waste management, and social reforms through education."

Goodwill Ambassadors Three additional UN Goodwill Ambassadors were named: John Paul Dejoria (Paul Mitchell Systems, Patrón, Sun King Solar), Josh Tickell (director of the award-winning film FUEL), and the 11 year old Nikos Spirdakis (director of the climate change PSA, "Save It").

The current model of the Australian national energy grid is designed for maximum consumption. The model of the national energy grid is not sustainable for a national climate change strategy. We already see the repeating of past mistakes of investments by picking pet projects and having power carried across long distances with geothermal in Queensland. The current business practices of the national grid stakeholders will easily want to make the existing systems more efficient and effective when government policy has designed the system to maximise energy output. Coupled with these problems of the national energy grid of high levels of distribution inefficiencies is how Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Green Power both of which seemed to be designed for large economic players to benefit from. UN Renewable Energy Award for Bindeshwar Pathak

India has starred yet again at the United Nations. Dr Bindeshwar Pathak, the mentor and the CEO of the Sulabh International, was awarded the Renewable Energy Award for developing low cost toilet technology. The technology is used to produce energy from human excreta.

The Award was conferred in a function at Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Organization at the United Nations headquarters. The award recognizes the contributions of individuals and institutions towards handling the crisis of climate change and sustainable global energy resources. In the awards ceremony organized on lines of the Nobel Award, American Actor Darren Moore presented the award to Dr Bindeshwar Pathak.

History of Sulabh goes back 40 years when they designed efficient toilets for use all over India. The toilet system organically breaks down human excreta into trapped biogas that can be burned to provide cooking fuel and electricity. It also contributes towards reducing health hazards.

While accepting the award Dr Bindeshwar Pathak said, “The award will spur the organisation to strive to render service with greater zeal in the field of sanitation, particularly recycling of human waste,” .

19/06/2009 09:32:00 NEW YORK: The United Nations' Inter-Governmental Renewable Energy Organization (IREO) has awarded Sulabh International for this year's prestigious Renewable Energy Award.

Sulabh International's founder Bindeshwar Pathak received the award at the UN headquarters in New York on June 11.

The internationally acclaimed organization has been awarded for making "incredible strides in changing the standards of sanitation across the globe".

"'The UN has selected Sulabh International for this award as its founder has made incredible strides in promoting and changing the standards of sanitation in India as well other parts of the globe,'" said Robson Mello, Secretary General, IREO, which has a de facto status within the UN.

Dr Pathak has been awarded for his indigenous, cost-effective, two-pit toilet technology which recycles and reuses human excreta for biogas generation. While pioneering biogas generation from public toilet complexes, Sulabh International's energy efficient biogas plant design with multiple benefits in sanitation, bio-energy and manure, has even been approved by the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy.

The biogas produced by Sulabh has been found to be good to provide both cooking fuel and electricity.

In his acceptance speech Dr. Pathak said, "This kind of honor at the UN gives global recognition and acceptance to ideas and efforts of Sulabh which otherwise would have remained buried as demonstration projects, without being replicated and being of any use for the benefit of the society."

The award recognizes the achievements of individuals and institutions in response to the crisis of climate change and sustainable global energy resources, and honors those who choose to lead the way of global advancement in alternative energy solutions by challenging conventional wisdom and encouraging critical thinking to create positive reform.

Modeled on the status and integrity of the Nobel Prize, this annual awards ceremony draws attention to future energy issues which constitute some of the most urgent challenges facing the world's leaders today. COGNAC'S CORNER
