Abstract The French Revolution of 1789 was instrumental in the emergence and growth of modern nationalism, the idea that a state should represent, and serve the interests of, a people, or "nation," that shares a common culture and history and feels as one. But national ideas, often with their source in the otherwise cosmopolitan world of the Enlightenment, were also an important cause of the Revolution itself. The rhetoric and documents of the Revolution demonstrate the importance of national ideas. -

This book, focused on the origins of the French revolution, can be best understood as an English response to the historiographical developments that emerged elsewhere over the last 25 years.[1] Specifically, the English approach might be characterized as empirical, focused on social rather than cultural history, committed to linking social history to political events, and quite uninterested in the postmodern and feminist approaches current elsewhere, particularly in North America. Illustrating this approach in the last decade or so, English historians have published a raft of political histories concerning the eighteenth century. The modern English academic study of the French Revolution emerged as a distinctive tradition in the postwar era, led by luminaries Richard Cobb and Alfred Cobban. The two scholars hardly shared a similar perspective, except their skepticism toward Marxism. Emerging even more clearly among their students was the view that social conditions underpinned politics. Yet these English historians specifically disputed the connection articulated by Marxists in France, as Cobban found only an occupational group, the lawyers, rather than the bourgeoisie, as the progenitors of the Revolution. Similarly, his intellectual descendent Colin Lucas saw only “social stresses” between groups rather than all out class conflict as the problem in the Old Regime. -

FEUDAL CONTRACT – MEDIEVAL EUROPE Imagine you are living in Medieval Europe (500 – 1500). Despite the fact that a feudal contract is an unwritten contract, write out a feudal contract. You and a partner will take on the roles of lord and vassal: - You Need to Write Out the Contract: - The lord can have a certain title (i.e. duke/duchess, baron/baroness, or count/countess), and specify what social standing the vassal has (i.e. lower-level knight, peasant, etc.). - In your contract, specify how much acreage in land (fief) will be given to the vassal. - Specify how much military service the vassal will serve, and what kind of fighting they will do (i.e. cavalry, foot soldier…) - How much money will a vassal provide his lord if he is kidnapped, and if there is a ransom? How much will a vassal provide for one of the lord’s children’s weddings? (Specify money in terms of weight and precious metal such as “30 lbs. gold”). - Specify other duties from the readings (Feudalism HW and class handout) that will be done by a lord and vassal (i.e. the lord will give safety and will defend his vassal in court). - List any other duties a lord/vassal will do of your choosing. (i.e. farm a certain crop, make a certain craft) - Define feudalism, fief, knight, vassal, and serfs. - Sign and date your contract at the bottom to make it official, and make sure the date is between the year 500 and 1500. Example: Lord/Vassal Feudal Contract: I am a peasant (name of vassal) and will serve and be the vassal of (name of Lord/Duke). -

To become something therein.” -Abbe Sieyes 1789 Pre-Revolution • Louis XVI came to the throne in the midst of a serious financial crisis • France was nearing bankruptcy due to the outlays that were outpacing income • A new tax code was implemented under the direction of Charles Alexandre de Calonne • This proposal included a land tax • Issues with the Three Estates and inequality within it Peasant Life pre-Revolution • French peasants lived better than most of their class, but were still extremely poor • 40% worked land, but it was subdivided into several small plots which were shared and owned by someone else • Unemployment was high due to the waning textile industry • Rent and food prices continued to rise • Worst harvest in 40 years took place during the winter of 1788-89 Peasant Life pre-Revolution • The Third Estate, which was the lower classes in France, were forced by the nobility and the Church to pay large amounts in taxes and tithes • Peasants had experienced a lot of unemployment during the 1780s because of the decline in the nation’s textile industry • There was a population explosion of about 25-30% in roughly 90 years that did not coincide with a rise in food production Direct Causes of the Revolution • Famine and malnutrition were becoming more common as a result of shortened food supply • Rising bread prices contributes to famine • France’s near bankruptcy due to their involvement in various -

M athie( s study of the Thermidorian Reaction, of which the present volume is a translation, is a continuation of his history of the French Revolution, of which the English version was published in 1928. In form and character, however, there is a notable difference. In the case of the earlier work the limitations imposed by the publishers excluded all references and foot-notes, and the author had to refer the reader to his other published works for the evidence on which his conclusions were based. In the case of the present book no such limitations have been set, and M. Mathiei: has thus been able not only to state his con clusions, but to give the chain of reasoning by which they have been reached. The Thermidorian Reaction is therefore something more than a sequel to The French Revolution, which M. Mathiei:, with perhaps undue modesty, has described as a precis having no independent authority; it is not only a work of art, but a weighty contribution to historical science. One of the fullest and most sharply focused of the reports that have appeared is Edward C. Banfield's The Moral Basis of a Backward Society (1958). Although the book contains much valuable information for the student of peasant society and culture, a major part of the analysis is open to serious question. In the light of the present lack of information on south- crn Italy, it seems particularly important to put certain additional facts and alternative interpretations on record. In his study of a village which he calls Montegrano, Banfield is specifically concerned with "what accounts for the political in- capacity of the village" (1958:31). By "political incapacity" he means the apparent lack of ability to form voluntary economic and political associations devoted to the benefit of the community as a whole or a part of it larger than the nuclear family. -
Enlightenment Walking Tour 4
France and Paris were changed dramatically by the Enlightenment and ensuing French Revolution. Likewise, many of the monuments and buildings you’ll see on this walk were “reinvented” during the 18th century. The Panthéon, where this walk starts, began as a church sponsored by an absolute monarch and ended the century as a monument to the country’s most famous Enlightenment figures. The place de la Concorde, where the walk ends, saw one monarch celebrated with a statue and another executed on the same site. Saint-Sulpice and Saint- Thomas-d’Aquin were transformed from churches to secular “temples” and back to churches again. And the Palais du Luxembourg, Hôtel de Salm, and Palais Bourbon, homes at the beginning of the century to royalty and aristocrats, ended the century as homes to the country’s newly created democratic institutions. In addition to showcasing neoclassical buildings and monuments, the walk also provides an opportunity to wander through part of the Saint-Germain des Prés quarter, one of the city’s most lively and interesting neighborhoods. NORMAN HAMPSON Norman Hampson 1922–2011 ‘NORMAN WAS ALWAYS LUCKY’, said his father when he married Jacqueline Gardin in 1948.1 Norman Hampson never doubted it, knowing that the happiest events in his life came about by chance. They left him profoundly convinced that history, too, develops by chances that historians habitually underestimate, and his deepest instincts left him sceptical of all forms of historical determinism. He did not consciously set out to be a professional historian, much less a historian of France. He was born on 8 April 1922 in Leyland and grew up in industrial Lancashire. His mother, Elizabeth Fazackerley, bore a very ancient Lancashire name. His father, Frank Hampson, was clerk to the Education Authority. Neither came from an educated background, but their efforts to compensate through their two sons won them entry to the most prestigious school in the north, Manchester Grammar School. Here Norman at first followed his much revered elder brother (who went on to become a consultant surgeon) on the science side, though all the while developing a passion for all forms of literature, from the classics, at which he excelled, down to modern English poetry. Only in the sixth form did he finally abandon science. Throughout his life he could quote pages of Shakespeare by heart, and in the sixth form he and Norman Swallow, later a pioneering television producer, established a literary magazine, Phoenix, which carried on with the help of his father some years after he had left school. Haunting Manchester bookshops on his way home, he also began to write his own poems, and even a short novel. -

How Modern Is the French Revolution?
Review Essay Paradigms and Paranoia: How Modern Is the French Revolution? REBECCA L. SPANG It is a truth, widely acknowledged, that the study of history has changed dramatically 1 since the end of World War II. Cliometrics has come and gone; the new social history has become old hat; narrative has been revived. Structuralist approaches associated, at least in part, with the Annales school, have been superseded by the notionally poststructuralist turns of the linguistic screw; total history has yielded to micro history; we all recognize Eurocentrism when we see it. How surprising it is, then, to note how remarkably constant textbooks have been in 2 assessing the import of the French Revolution. From classics of Cold War "Western" historiography to recent efforts to write history within a global framework, the fundamental message remains the same: the Revolution of 1789 is the turning point of the modern world. 1 The wording may vary, but the substance does not. Said to mark "the beginning of modern history," the French Revolution is deemed "a decisive event in world history" that initiated a "century of rapid and tremendous change"; after the events of 1789–1815, "the clock could not really be set back." 2 Authors may emphasize different aspects of this modern period—political Liberalism, triumphant individualism, nationalistic militarism—but their accounts coincide in treating the revolution as an identifiable period of rapid, irreversible change. An evocative but, in this non-geological context, far from precise word—watershed—has provided one popular metaphor for conveying some sense of the revolution's relation to modernity.
