So taking on a newspaper business a year ago probably wasn’t the greatest of timing for experienced journalist Teresa Ramsey. Teresa took over the well-established Plains Profilenewspaper in March, 2020, renaming it the Valley Profile and extending its circulation from the Hauraki Plains to also cover Paeroa, Thames and the Thames Coast. She was about to put the first issue together for print when the Level 4 shutdown was announced, putting a stop to any chance of delivery. “That 4-week wait was horrendous, just the uncertainty,” she said. “I had just resigned from a good national job and now I didn’t know if I was even going to be able to get this new venture off the ground. It was a massive risk and a stressful time. “Fortunately, our advertisers remained loyal and extremely supportive of what I was trying to achieve - to get top quality local community news back into the Thames Valley region.” The first issue of the Valley Profile was put together during the Level 4 shutdown and was The Valley Profile has been able to provide 100 per cent local news for the past year, thanks to local support. delivered on the first Wednesday in May - in are what keeps this newspaper going and from monthly to fortnightly in December. sionate about our region, she says. the middle of Level 3. developing, giving us the opportunity to de- Now, thanks to the team’s hard work and “And we are ahead of the rest with two ex- “This meant gloves and strict distancing liver that important local news to connect massive ongoing support from advertisers, perienced journalists on the ground, which rules for our newspaper delivery people, and our local communities,” Teresa said. the Valley Profile is publishing weekly from means we can cover our big events, sit in also family and friends picking up more than “Without advertising, there is no paper.” May 5 - with 12,500 copies delivered to on council meetings, and uncover the truth half a dozen paper runs as many of our de- Support remained huge, and many offers every letterbox in the Thames Valley every about what’s happening in this district. livery people were vulnerable to the Covid-19 to contribute from members of the com- Wednesday, plus bulk distribution around “Already, we are leading the way when virus and couldn’t venture out. munity also flowed in, leading to a variety the Coromandel Peninsula. it comes to local reporting and we’re also “I was determined the first issue would of top quality photos, reports and content “It’s the perfect way to celebrate our first able to offer our businesses a voice with our get to every letterbox in the Thames Valley to complement stories celebrating local birthday,” Teresa said. extremely popular advertorials plus adver- though.” champions, events and general news. “We weren’t quite ready to make the leap tising and classifieds at reasonable rates in That first issue was just 16 pages but as Before long, Teresa was able to employ to a weekly print but with two corporate a paper that’s read from cover to cover. support for local community news grew, so full-time advertising manager Nikki Sand- rags breathing down our necks, we knew “It also means we care if any of our paper did requests for advertising, which meant the ers then reporter Kelley Tantau. There’s an ease to her movements, a warmth in her voice, and it’s here, with a view of the Firth of Thames, where Susanna sits down with her clients, self-representatives, using her own past experiences to save them from the “unnec- essary pain and loss” she suffered through the New Zealand Family Court. “People often ask me: ‘Aren’t you getting depressed listening to all these people’s sto- ries?’ and I say no, because the moment I meet them, I can help them go from being a victim, to becoming a victor. So there’s nothing to be depressed about there.” Susanna moved to New Zealand 21 years ago from Namibia, South West Africa. In her home country, she had a top job in government consultancy, and specialised in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sport. Arriving in Auckland, however, with two young daughters, she had to “basically start at the bot- tom”. And, after going through a rough divorce, finding a job became hardly possible despite her achievements, as employers said she had “no Kiwi experience”. We’re introducing our new programme, Te Mahi Whenua, to our stable of courses. Te Mahi Whenua is a 15 week Level 3 Programme designed to get people back to the land. We have designed Te Mahi Whenua to give you confi dence with all kinds of machinery – quad bikes, two wheelers, chainsaws, fencing – both wire and post and rails. Te Mahi Whenua is what it says: less classroom time, more time on the land with hands-on real world learning. The programme encompasses health and well-being and incorporates this into working the land. You will fi ll your kete with new skills and upgrade old ones. If you want to be part of a great team whose focus is working the land, not the classroom, call us and keep fi lling your kete with new skills. We are taking our Tapa Wha model for learning further afi eld, teaching akonga from Huntly and Hamilton; with the same passion for youth and utilizing the same principles that we have at our Kopu campus. We have partnered with Te Whangai Trust where our common philosophies create a synergy that goes into teaching and preparing these akonga for life - what it takes to move into employment and succeed. Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles if you have Whanau members 16 years + lounging around the house, give us a call and we can organise a visit with you at your place to meet the team. Being able to gain NCEA Levels whilst working through our Vocational Pathways programmes at Level 2. Our passionate team at Valley Education will make a diff erence and help prepare our akonga for the work environment. We can also help with driver license training (Call Pete on 022 0812 560), and get all those necessary milestones sorted to be work-ready – bank account, IRD number and qualifi cations.
