Plant-ants on Macaranga myrmecophytes protect their host-plants against herbivores. Because interspecific differences in ant defense intensities among Macaranga myrmecophytes affect the host-plant use by herbivorous insects, they need to be studied to better understand the ecology and evolution of herbivores on Macaranga myrmecophytes. In this study, to examine whether larvae of a lycaenid species, Arhopala major, which potentially feeds on some Macaranga myrmecophytes, can be used for a bioassay that assesses relative ant aggressiveness towards general herbivores on Macaranga plants, we experimentally introduced A. major larvae onto leaves of three Macaranga myrmecophytic species. We measured (1) the time required for the first touch by plant-ants on an introduced larva and (2) the number of plant-ant workers aggregating 3 min after the first touch. The order of three Macaranga species in ant defense intensity, as estimated by the two measurements, corresponded with the results of previous studies investigating the interspecific differences in ant defense intensities using ant-exclusion experiments. -

The Aphnaeinae (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) are a largely African subfamily of 278 described species that exhibit extraordinary life-history variation. The larvae of these butterflies typically form mutualistic associations with ants, and feed on awide variety of plants, including 23 families in 19 orders. However, at least one species in each of 9 of the 17 genera is aphytophagous, parasitically feeding on the eggs, brood or regurgitations of ants. This diversity in diet and type of symbiotic association makes the phylogenetic relations of the Aphnaeinae of particular interest. A phylogenetic hypothesis for the Aphnaeinae was inferred from 4.4 kb covering the mitochondrial marker COI and five nuclear markers (wg, H3, CAD, GAPDH and EF1) for each of 79 ingroup taxa representing 15 of the 17 currently recognized genera, as well as three outgroup taxa. Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses all support Heath’s systematic revision of the clade based on morphological characters. -

170 JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY Arhopala in Borneo, or at least 22 species of the strange genus Allotinus in the subfamily Miletini, or 12 species of Miletus itself? A host of Celastrina blues, and spectacular long tailed Drupadia hairstreak species, make one want to take the next plane to Borneo to explore and study the endless variety of these groups there! In addition to providing an excellent guide to identification and some details of the basic biology of these two major families of butterflies in Borneo, the authors include pictures in color and words of the richness of the Bornean habitats that still remain. Yet they warn that during the two short years since the publication of Volume I, forests have continued to be destroyed for the sake of local economic development, especially for the export of forest timber to Japan. As the editor, Kazuhisa Otsuka, aptly says in his Foreword, "The tropical rain forest and its rich life should last forever for the earth as well as for us. The beautiful green world where birds sing, flowers bloom, and nymphs (butterflies) dance, should not be harmed any more beyond the present state. Otherwise, it will eventually lead to an unnatural extinction of human being." Together with the plates, this fascinating text (published in full in both Japanese and English) provides a rich introduction to the incredible butterfly fauna of Borneo. The excellent text figures, maps, and separate keys for males and females provide the elements of a model work for others to emulate. Any lepidopterist or scientist interested in the butterflies of southeast Asia will want to add both volumes of this work to his or her library. -

Madhu Babu Wildlife Management Circle, Tirupati Andhra Pradesh - 517 507, India Abstract: Seshachalam hills, one of the first Biosphere Reserve in Andhra Pradesh, located in southern Eastern Ghats of Chittoor and Kadapa districts. It is spread over 4755.99 Km2 . The vegetation is a unique mix of the dry deciduous and moist deciduous types. A detailed survey of butterflies was conducted from August 2011 to January 2012. The objective of the observation is to determine the presence of butterflies. The reserve area has different habitats like scrub jungle, open forest and trial path. Each zone was explored on the basis of possibility and availability of butterflies. A total of 50 species of butterflies were recorded under five families. The family Nymphalidae and Lycaenidae were found dominant with 20 species and 12 species, respectively, followed by Pieridae (11 species), Papilionidae (5 species) and two species from the family Hesperiidae. More number of species was observed in Talakona followed by Mamandur, Balapalli, Tirumala, Jungle Book and Divyaram. Observed species were grouped in five categories on basis of number of sighting in the field. The butterflies were categorized as Very Common (VC) 40% (20 species), Common (C) 36% 18 species, Uncommon (UC) 10% (5 species), Occasional (O) 8 % (4 species) and Rare (R) 6 % (3 species). -
