The house dust mite and how to control it Information for patients Dermatology PROUD TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE SHEFFIELD TEACHING HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST What should I know about house dust mites? House dust mites are so tiny that they cannot be seen without a microscope. Yet, along with dust, they are one of the most common causes of allergies. What symptoms do they cause? They can make your nose run or cause sneezing and wheezing. If you suffer from eczema, they can make this worse. Where are they found? The house dust mite hides in the dust you find in even the cleanest houses. It can be found deep in carpets and curtains, and also in the seams of mattresses, where even the most house proud person cannot see them. Bedding is also one of the house dust mites' favourite places. They particularly like cotton, wool and artificial fibres. How can I discourage house dust mites? • Level one measures The most important places to target first are your mattress, duvet and pillows. These need to be covered with house dust mite proof covers. It is important not to get the plastic type covers, as these can make you and the bed too hot. You can buy dust mite proof covers from a range of suppliers including John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com) and Allergy Best Buys (www.allergybestbuys.co.uk) Wash bedding weekly in hot water. Avoid duvets and pillows with feather, down or flock. page 2 of 4 House dust mites do not like sunlight, so another way to discourage them from taking up residence in bedding is to 'air' blankets and mattresses outside. Also, try and dry sheets and pillowcases outside. Replace curtains with blinds, if possible. If you have to use curtains, then it is best to use curtains made of a lightweight material. Curtains will also need to be vacuumed often, and washed regularly (about every 6 weeks). Keep rooms very tidy. Put clothes away in wardrobes and don't hang dressing gowns behind doors. Use a damp duster when cleaning. A damp duster collects dust much better than a dry one. • Level two measures The next most important place is the carpet. According to research, removing the carpet from a bedroom reduces the house dust mite levels by 80%. The ideal flooring is laminate, wood, tiles or lino. Vacuuming a carpet regularly is not as effective as replacing it with hard flooring. In addition, you must not do the vacuuming, or be in the room at the time it is vacuumed or for 30 minutes afterwards. Ensure the vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter. • Level three measures Obtain air filtration units for the bedroom. The number of house dust mites can be reduced by using a dehumidifier.
