DISCOVER MORE AT THE HOLD ALL YEAR ROUND

In addition to the changing programme of exhibitions running in the gallery at The Hold, you can also explore a whole range of displays inspired by our collections for free. Step into the building and be wowed by Valerie Irwin’s charcoal sketches at an enormous scale. These sketches run the full length of The Street and are a fascinating way to explore the changing face of Ipswich’s waterfront. In the café, discover our recipe corner, with a rolling film of recipes from the archives and a place to share your own ‘family favourites’. Don’t miss BBC Look East’s Kevin Burch reporting ‘news from the archives’ on our News Wall; from a trip in a hot air balloon in 1785, right up to Ipswich Town winning the local derby in 2009. DISPLAYS ACROSS THE COUNTY Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft You can discover Suffolk Archives displays at our branches in Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft, as well as at The Hold. At Bury St Edmunds, a new display area will be opening with an exhibition sharing highlights from the Suffolk Archives collections from West Suffolk. A future display will form part of the celebrations planned to mark 1,000 years since the founding of the Abbey of St Edmund. In Lowestoft, the searchroom has been refreshed and includes a new exhibition space, the chance to explore highlights from our oral history collection on a vintage telephone, and an interactive digital gallery. With a range of displays throughout the year covering topics from seaside holidays, artwork, transport and much more, there is often something new to see. Our pop-up displays travel all across the county visiting schools, village halls, churches and other venues.
