It was released on November 13, 2015 by Def Jam Recordings and School Boy Records. It serves as the follow-up to Bieber's third studio album Believe (2012), and it was developed after the release of his collection Journals (2013), which saw him in a more R&B direction. The album was created over a period of two years, in which Bieber struggled to find a musical direction for recording, scrapping each of these tracks many times. Bieber said that the sound and the lyrical content of the album were heavily inspired by Chris Brown's 2012 album Fortune. The songs on Purpose have a similarly inanimate feeling; they seem to radiate more than they move. "No Sense" feels oddly hookless and almost willfully ugly, and when Travis Scott surfaces toward the end of the track, he registers as justanother cold texture. "What Do You Mean?" was released as the album's first single on August 28, 2015.[91] It was preceded by a social media campaign, which started on July 29, 2015, where Bieber "commissioned at least one celebrity per day to hold up a sign teasing the new track and counting down the days to its release."[92] Upon release, the song became Bieber's first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, debuting at number one on the week listed on September 19, 2015, replacing The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face" for one week.[93] It was also his first number-one single in Australia[94] and the United Kingdom, where he also broke a streaming record,[95] while also topping the charts of other eleven countries.[96] The song's music video features "shirtless Bieber in bed with a young woman" and "getting kidnapped and punching around some masked men", as well as appearance from actor John Leguizamo. "Sorry" was announced as the album's second single on October 16, 2015.[98][99] It was released on October 23, 2015.[100] A day before, a music video for the song was released, showing a group of women dancing to the song.[101] The song reached the top of the charts in the United States, remaining at the top for three weeks,[102] as well as the Canadian and the UK charts. Moreover, the single has peaked within the top five in almost every other market, including number one in other six countries. First single, “What Do You Mean” (released August 28) debuted at #1 on the Canadian Nielsen Soundscan Chart and has continued to hold that position these past six weeks. It also went to #1 on the US Billboard Top 40 Pop Songs, and became his first #1 UK national chart hit. Across only three days of December 2013, Journals was released, Justin Bieber announced his retirement — surprise! — and Justin Bieber’s Believe opened in theaters. Journals, an unpromoted collection heavy on R&B-oriented ballads, arrived in a dead zone for new releases — not that last-minute holiday shoppers could have stuffed stockings with it anyway, as no physical edition was available. Many of its songs appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, but only two of them remained for a second week. In another odd twist, perhaps an act of sabotage or one of confused mercy, the album was not submitted for sales tracking, so it did not appear on the Billboard 200, where it would have presumably landed in a low slot. As for the film, that grossed barely two-million on its opening weekend. The entertainer’s career was in a bizarre state. Roughly a year later, Skrillex and Diplo resuscitated a vulnerable piano ballad Bieber handed them and applied it a wobbly dance-pop production. “Where Are Ü Now,” that song reached the Top Ten in the singer’s native Canada, the U.S., and several other territories. By the end of 2015, Bieber’s career and personal life, which had been marked by a series of public blunders, appeared to be back in order. “What Do You Mean?” and “Sorry” had skillfully latched onto the spritely tropical house sound; the former became his first number one hit in the States, and the latter narrowly missed the top. These singles also showed him making a deeper connection with his material and that, yes, he was progressing from performer to artist. Highlighted by those three hits that preceded it, Purpose is characterized as much by its inward-looking ballads, like the voice-and-piano-only “Life Is Worth Living” and the title track, both of which offer full-effort stock spiritual platitudes. In those songs and many others, there’s repentance for personal and romantic slip-ups, and Bieber — yearning, aching, but not desperate — frequently sounds as if he’s trying to win over a lover for the long term. There are many metaphorical obstacles in his path — he dodges lightning, a blizzard, and an avalanche, skates on thin ice, gets stuck on a treadmill — yet he ultimately owns up to his own mistakes and admits “Don’t nobody deserve myself.” A bumpy, oddly compelling restart, Purpose should hook open-minded pop fans who previously paid him no mind, and it could even win back some of those who wrote Bieber off years ago.     THE PRACTICE OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE/REVIEW ARTICLE Lean Thinking in Emergency Departments: A Critical Review Richard J. Holden, PhD From the School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI, and the Division of Ergonomics, School of Technology and Health, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. Emergency departments (EDs) face problems with crowding, delays, cost containment, and patient safety. To address these and other problems, EDs increasingly implement an approach called Lean thinking. This study critically reviewed 18 articles describing the implementation of Lean in 15 EDs in the United States, Australia, and Canada. An analytic framework based on human factors engineering and occupational research generated 6 core questions about the effects of Lean on ED work structures and processes, patient care, and employees, as well as the factors on which Lean’s success is contingent. The review revealed numerous ED process changes, often involving separate patient streams, accompanied by structural changes such as new technologies, communication systems, staffing changes, and the reorganization of physical space. Patient care usually improved after implementation of Lean, with many EDs reporting decreases in length of stay, waiting times, and proportion of patients leaving the ED without being seen. Few null or negative patient care effects were reported, and studies typically did not report patient quality or safety outcomes beyond patient satisfaction. The effects of Lean on employees were rarely discussed or measured systematically, but there were some indications of positive effects on employees and organizational culture. Success factors included employee involvement, management support, and preparedness for change. Despite some methodological, practical, and theoretic concerns, Lean appears to offer significant improvement opportunities.
