In addition the walls in England are split into the eight BMC areas. • The following abbreviations are used within the facility descriptions: Abbreviations LC = Leisure Centre, SC = Sports Centre, ComColl = Community College, OEC = Outdoor Education Centre, CC = Climbing Centre, CW = Climbing Wall, Uni = University, sqm = square meterage, TR = top rope. The following icons are used to indicate the facilities a climbing wall may have: The wall is a member of the Association of British Climbing Walls. Walls that give some form of discount to BMC members. Changing facilities. There are some catering facilities at the wall. Please note that this could be anything from vending machines to three course meals, and/or bar facilities. NEED FOR VERTICAL SPEED Climbing will make its Olympic debut this summer, complete with a version of the sport that requires speed and oozes adrenaline—but lacks one thing climbers love. BY JOHN BURGMAN YOU MAY have been rock climbing before, but you’ve never done it the way Nathaniel Coleman is doing it right now at the Momentum Indoor Climbing gym in Salt Lake City. Coleman isn’t climb- ing so much as Spider-Manning his way up a 15-meter wall, all instinct and quick reflexes, just a few feet from the top in under six seconds. That’s where he coils his legs and leaps (yes, really), smacking the buzzer before falling backward to swing from his safety harness. Electric, right? Except Coleman, one of the United States’ finest competitive climbers, can’t stand it. “Speed PHOTOGRAPHS BY PETER BOHLER MEN’S HEALTH / April 2020 17 BODY LICENSE TO SKILL! • New Beacon Climbing Centre Attracts Visitors to Wales Submitted By: Visit Wales Wednesday, 1 August 2012
New Beacon Climbing Centre attracts visitors to Wales Submitted by: Visit Wales Wednesday, 1 August 2012 The Beacon Climbing Centre is now open for business at its new location in the former Barcud Studio on Caernarfon's Cibyn Estate. The popular indoor climbing wall known simply as 'The Beacon' has been an important part of the north Wales climbing scene since opening 18 years ago, and is a favourite with locals and those on a UK activity holiday (http://www.visitwales.co.uk) alike. The move from Ceunant's Marconi building to bigger premises, with room for 56 roped lines, has given the Beacon the chance to provide a greatly improved facility for both elite climbers and beginners. The main lead climbing wall, heavily featured with grooves and changes of angle, is 17 metres high at its tallest point and overhangs by seven metres on its steepest section. Opposite this is a gently overhanging 15 metre speed climbing wall. A further wall is available for top roping and introductory leading. All in all an ideal destination for getting active (http://www.visitwales.co.uk/active/) in Wales. Currently only one of the three bouldering areas are open but within the next couple of months an impressive 11 metre long and five metre high bouldering 'routing roof' and free standing boulder will be completed. Director Gill Lovick said: “We’ve waited a long time for this and it’s really exciting to finally realise our ambitions after months of hard work by the Beacon staff and our external contractors." She added: "In addition to providing a top class

LEAD CLIMBING WALL BOULDERING WALL SPEED CLIMBING WALL 3D PANELS 2D PANELS ODS SUPRALITE PANELS Why Rock Climbing May Be the Ultimate Full-Body Workout The muscles in your hips and torso strain to hold your lower half against the wall. You arch backward and extend one hand up to clasp the next hold your thighs and calves burning with the effort of holding you steady and in balance. A moment later, when the tips of your fingers have secured their grip, there’s a wholesale shift in the muscles you call on to maintain your safe purchase on the climbing wall. Exercise is all about engaging your muscles from your heart to your biceps and quads and asking those muscles to perform work. And when it comes to activating and training a diverse range of muscles, few exercises rival climbing. Both climbing and bouldering, the name for climbing on low rock formations without a rope, involve “nearly the whole body’s musculature,” says Jiří Baláš, a faculty researcher and lecturer at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic, who has conducted research on climbing. While running, cycling, rowing and most conventional gym workouts teach the body to perform consistent, repetitive motions either to build strength, increase cardiorespiratory fitness or both climbing is “a more complex movement” In fact, climbing is an endlessly variable series of movements. No climbing surface or route is quite like another, so the work you ask your muscles to perform during a climb changes each time you exercise. This ensures you’re training a greater number of muscles.
