A HISTORY OF OUR CHURCH Welcome to our beautiful little church, named after St Botolph*, the 7th century patron saint of wayfarers who founded many churches in the East of England. The present church on this site was built in 1263 in the Early English style. This was at the request and expense of Sir William de Thorpe, whose family later built Longthorpe Tower. At first a chapel in the parish of St John it was consecrated as a church in 1850. The church has been well used and much loved for over 750 years. It is noted for its stone, brass and stained glass memorials to men killed in World War One, to members of the St John and Strong families of Thorpe Hall and to faithful members of the congregation. WILD ABSTRACT Antiquarian and modern excavations at Castor, Cambs., have been taking place since the seventeenth century. The site, which lies under the modern village, has been variously described as a Roman villa, a guild centre and a palace, while Edmund Artis working in the 1820s termed it the ‘Praetorium’. The Roman buildings covered an area of 3.77 ha (9.4 acres) and appear to have had two main phases, the latter of which formed a single unified structure some 130 by 90 m. This article attempts to draw together all of the previous work at the site and provide a comprehensive plan, a set of suggested dates, and options on how the remains could be interpreted. INTRODUCTION his article provides a summary of various excavations and surveys of a large group of Roman buildings found beneath Castor village, Cambs. (centred on TL 124 984). The village of Castor T lies 8 km to the west of Peterborough (FIG. 1) and rises on a slope above the first terrace gravel soils of the River Nene to the south. The underlying geology is mixed, with the lower part of the village (8 m AOD) sitting on both terrace gravel and Lower Lincolnshire limestone, while further up the valley side the Upper Estuarine Series and Blisworth Limestone are encountered, with a capping of Blisworth Clay at the top of the slope (23 m AOD).1 The slope of the ground on which the Roman buildings have been arranged has not been emphasised enough or even mentioned in earlier accounts of the site.2 The current evidence suggests that substantial Roman terracing and the construction of revetment or retaining walls was required to consolidate the underlying geology. -

Appendix 1: Proposed Vivacity Business Plan 24.2.1 Executive Summary and Overview By The Chief Executive The next five years is a story with two themes. The first is one of business as usual. Given the nature of our work this is not surprising. The day to day work of Vivacity remains unchanged- lending almost 1 million items through our libraries; teaching 1500 children a week to swim; providing 1million people the opportunity to take part in sport; approaching 100,000 people learning about their local heritage and 55,000 theatre tickets sold each year. The second theme is one of change brought about by opportunities. Most significantly: Development of Hampton Leisure Facilities - It is probable that the management of two new leisure facilities will be offered to Vivacity in the summer of 2013. This will generate fantastic new opportunities for people to take part and increase our turnover dramatically and hence make a significant contribution to our central support costs. This must be balanced by the knowledge that it will bring tangible risks- the business model is primarily based on the selling of gym memberships in other words a non- fixed income. It is crucial that we approach the opportunity presented by these facilities with business focus rather than being attracted by the opportunity of growth for its own sake. If these projects move forward they will become the main focus of effort in 2013 and 2014. Must Farm Finds - The long term future for the Must Farm find is far from clear. What is known is that Flag Fen offers up a medium and perhaps longer term opportunity for the preservation and presentation of these fantastic artefacts. -

Chapter accepted in Kilby, SE;Gardiner, M, Perceptions of Medieval Settlement, 'Handbook of Later Medieval Archaeology', Oxford University Press (in press) Perceptions of Medieval Settlement Mark Gardiner and Susan Kilby The approach to the perception of landscape and settlement adopted by medieval archaeologists has been rather different to those of their colleagues working on the prehistoric period. To a large extent such differences can be attributed to the quality of the evidence. Many of the studied medieval buildings still survive, albeit often as ruins. The landscape with its pattern of roads, fields and farms can be largely reconstructed in broad terms, and sometimes in detail. This sort of material both informs our understanding of past perceptions of landscape, but also serves to constrain the way we might interpret it. The type of imaginative reconstruction advocated, for example by Tilley (2010, 30–31), in which the archaeologist places themselves within the landscape and responds to the experience has been practised only rarely for the historic period. It is not that medievalists lack the imagination of prehistorians, but rather they do not feel the need to embark upon discussions of their particular experience of place when it is possible instead to reflect upon how those in the Middle Ages may have perceived their surroundings. A simple contrast between the medievalists’ and the prehistorians’ approaches to the perception of landscape is, however, misleading. Embodiment or the experience of place using the senses of the body occupying and moving through a place has been practised by both groups, but with different emphases. To stand in a medieval building and look out at the vista beyond is to adopt a phenomenological approach. -

New Beacon Climbing Centre attracts visitors to Wales Submitted by: Visit Wales Wednesday, 1 August 2012 The Beacon Climbing Centre is now open for business at its new location in the former Barcud Studio on Caernarfon's Cibyn Estate. The popular indoor climbing wall known simply as 'The Beacon' has been an important part of the north Wales climbing scene since opening 18 years ago, and is a favourite with locals and those on a UK activity holiday (http://www.visitwales.co.uk) alike. The move from Ceunant's Marconi building to bigger premises, with room for 56 roped lines, has given the Beacon the chance to provide a greatly improved facility for both elite climbers and beginners. The main lead climbing wall, heavily featured with grooves and changes of angle, is 17 metres high at its tallest point and overhangs by seven metres on its steepest section. Opposite this is a gently overhanging 15 metre speed climbing wall. A further wall is available for top roping and introductory leading. All in all an ideal destination for getting active (http://www.visitwales.co.uk/active/) in Wales. Currently only one of the three bouldering areas are open but within the next couple of months an impressive 11 metre long and five metre high bouldering 'routing roof' and free standing boulder will be completed. Director Gill Lovick said: “We’ve waited a long time for this and it’s really exciting to finally realise our ambitions after months of hard work by the Beacon staff and our external contractors." The Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia is proposing to open a new primary school in new-build premises within the Hampton East housing development area of Peterborough which, when fully open, will cater for 630 children aged 5-11 The new school will initially open in September 2022 for Reception and Years 1 and 2 and grow year by year until September 2026 when all year groups will be open. The school will incorporate a nursery class for 30 children aged 2-4 from the school’s expected opening date in September 2022 The new school building costs have been given provisional approval by the Department for Education (DfE). -

Chapter 16 Marholm Village and Buildings History of the Village Marholm village lies approximately four miles West of Peterborough and one mile from the seat of the Fitzwilliam family at Milton Hall. The parish covers some fourteen hundred acres, with the village positioned roughly in the centre. Today it remains a peaceful, largely agricultural community of some two hundred people. Although during the past fifty years the domination of agriculture has diminished, the village retains a rural feel, and in many ways is unchanged from its earlier history, despite the modern development, and proximity to a burgeoning city. To a large extent, this tranquillity has been preserved by the protection derived from Milton Estate, which has retained ownership of much of the property in the village. In addition, the Estate has curtailed further encroachment from the city beyond Mucklands Wood to the East, which delineates the border of Milton’s sales, in the 1960s, of land to the Peterborough Development Corporation for the expansion of the city. The name of the village most probably derives from ‘mere’, meaning pool, and ‘ham’, or settlement, and may refer to the pools by the Manor House. During the Middle Ages, the name was alternatively Marham, Marreham, Marrenham, Mareham, Morham and Marhome. By the 18th century it was commonly referred to as Marham and later known by the present spelling, Marholm [1]. Early History The early history of the village is obscure, with few known archaeological sites. Not surprisingly, however, in view of its proximity to the flourishing Roman settlement in Castor, there is some evidence of their presence in the area now embraced by Marholm.
