Consumer rights at EU level have come a long way over the last 20 years. However, the inability of consumers to band together to claim their rights when they have suffered detriment is one of the missing pieces of the jigsaw for EU consumers to access justice. As you are aware, Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to compensate consumers in Europe affected by the emissions scandal. This is in stark contrast to their response in the United States, where the threat of class action has proved decisive in delivering compensation for affected consumers. In your State of the Union speech a few days ago, you said that you are “shocked when consumers are knowingly and deliberately misled” and that you “call on the car industry to come clean and make it right”. We know that despite Commissioner Jourova’s efforts, which we appreciate, the company still refuses to put things right. Since the scandal broke over two years ago, VW remains adamant it will not compensate European car owners. It is now in your hands to decide whether in the future European consumers who have been victims of fraud on a large scale, or who have suffered from a trader’s unfair or illegal practices, should have a realistic chance to be compensated.

For years, Europe and the world have been witnessing a crime against humanity without opposing any resistance to it. In recent months, several studies have reported the use of Uyghur forced labour for the benefit of major European companies. Indeed, many Chinese factories, directly supplying EU brands exploit the Uyghurs and benefit from their forced labour. Facing this abjection, Europe must act to protect the lives and fundamental rights of Uyghurs. The EU should use its trade and market power to safeguards the founding principles enrichened in our Treaties and guiding our external policies. As the US did lately through an imports ban passed almost unanimously in the US House of Representatives, Europe urgently needs to establish a blacklist of Chinese companies implicated in Uyghur forced labour. The European Commission is fully committed to pursuing the objectives of the Energy1 Union strategy. In this context, the Commission is promoting diversification and competitive gas markets in the EU. In order to complete the internal energy’ market, the Commission supports infrastructure projects of common interest, which improve the interconnectivity between the Member States. Furthermore, the Commission, together with the Member States, is working to improve the resilience of the EU gas system to security of supply threats. To this end. the Commission has proposed a revised Regulation on security of gas supplies on which the European Parliament and the Council have recently reached an agreement. As regards Nord Stream 2, the Commission considers that the project is not in line with the policy objectives of the Energy' Union as it will not give access to a new supply source. Nord Stream 2, if built, cannot and should not be operated in a legal void or solely according to the law of a third country. Brussels, 14 April 2020 Dear Ms Elżbieta Witek, Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, Dear Members of the Polish Parliament, Dear Colleagues, As Members of the European Parliament, we are writing to express our deep concern regarding the Parliamentary Document no 39 on amending the act of June 6, 1997 - the Penal Code - known as the “Stop paedophilia” bill - and Parliamentary Document No 36 on the amendment to the Act of 7 January 1993 on family planning, protection of the human fetus and conditions for the termination of pregnancy -known as “Stop Abortion” bill - that will be debated in a first reading in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland in your sitting of the 15-16 April 2020. We are convinced that measures that roll back protections for women’s human rights and self- determination are of grave concern as they undermine a core European Union value, that of advancing gender equality. Under human rights law measures that undermine or restrict exist- ing rights are not permitted and these draft bills violate Poland’s obligation to ensure ever greater protection of human rights. We are deeply concerned that the “Stop Abortion” bill provide for the prohibition of termina- tion of pregnancy due to severe or fatal foetal anomalies, currently a legal ground for abortion in Poland. Poland’s Act of 1993 on Family Planning, Protection of Human Fetus and the Con- ditions of Legal Pregnancy Termination is one of the most restrictive laws on abortion in the European Union. The bill would in effect result in a near total denial of access to legal abortion in Poland as most legal abortions are performed under this ground.

THE NEW EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT KEY COMMITTEE COMPOSITION 31 JULY 2019 INTRODUCTION After several marathon sessions, the European Council agreed on the line-up for the EU “top jobs” on 2 July 2019. The deal, which notably saw German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU, EPP) surprisingly designated as the next European Commission (EC) President, meant that the European Parliament (EP) could proceed with the election of its own leadership on 3 July. The EPP and Renew Europe (formerly ALDE) groups, in line with the agreement, did not present candidates for the EP President. As such, the vote pitted the S&D’s David-Maria Sassoli (IT) against two former Spitzenkandidaten – Ska Keller (DE) of the Greens and Jan Zahradil (CZ) of the ACRE/ECR, alongside placeholder candidate Sira Rego (ES) of GUE. Sassoli was elected President for the first half of the 2019 – 2024 mandate, while the EPP (presumably EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber) would take the reins from January 2022. The vote was largely seen as a formality and a demonstration of the three largest Groups’ capacity to govern. However, Zahradil received almost 100 votes (more than the total votes of the ECR group), and Keller received almost twice as many votes as there are Greens/EFA MEPs. This forced a second round in which Sassoli was narrowly elected with just 11 more than the necessary simple majority. Close to 12% of MEPs did not cast a ballot. Joint Letter on the Medical Treatment of Prisoners in Bahrain
H.E. the Head of the European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Sultanate of Oman Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso Brussels, 21 November 2019 Dear Ambassador Cervone d’Urso, We, the undersigned Members of the European Parliament, are writing to express our concerns about the cruel and inhumane treatment of several high-profile prisoners in Bahrain, and to ask that you urge the Bahraini authorities to immediately allow those prisoners access to adequate medical care. Human rights organisations and family members of the prisoners, whose detention is at least questionable in the first place, have reported that prison authorities are arbitrarily denying prisoners urgent medical care, refusing to refer them to specialists, failing to disclose medical examination results, and withholding medication as a form of punishment. Denying a prisoner needed medical care violates the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, known as the Mandela Rules. Jau Prison Medical negligence, delays, and arbitrary exercise of authority in Bahrain’s prison system have been well-documented by the international human rights community. According to Amnesty International, in many cases, this has escalated to the level of intentional ill-treatment and permanent damage to the health of individuals suffering from injuries or grave chronic illnesses. The cases of political leader Hassan Mushaima, 71, and academic and opposition figure Dr. Abduljalil Al-Singace, 57, are especially alarming. Both men have been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in relation to their peaceful role in the 2011 pro-democracy movement. Dr. Al-Singace has experienced abuse and torture while in prison, documented by several human rights organisations.
