In the wake of a massive war between the gods, Thor is now the All-Father, the Valkyries are all dead, and Jane Foster has an unbreakable bond with the All-Weapon. Now Jane is torn between her normal life as a doctor and her role as the only Valkyrie ferrying the souls of heroes to the afterlife. Now if only she can figure out how to keep a flying horse in her apartment. A couple years ago I ran across this comic in a list of titles to peruse in advance of the upcoming Thor film with Jane Foster as Thor. I'm delighted I finally picked this up. Jane's a fascinating hero, the playing with Norse mythology and the broader Marvel canon is delightful, and the artwork is gorgeous. Recommended. ( ) I sort of like this new start for Jane Foster, mostly because I've developed an affection for the character during her run as Thor, but the writing here is borderline two-stars for me. It is mostly directed at fanboys, with deep continuity references that will probably drive away casual readers drawn to a female lead character. The humor is corny. Mr. Horse is simultaneously ridiculous and growing on me. I'll probably check out the next volume. ( ) I absolutely loved Jason Aaron's run with Jane Foster as the Mighty Thor. The story was brilliant, with a solid basis for her taking on the mantle, and a natural conclusion for her giving it up. It never felt contrived. So, I was excited to see Aaron and Marvel give Jane a new way to continue as a superhero - as Valkyrie. Minor SPOILER for the War of the Realms: in the final battle, Malekith's forces slaughter all the Valkyries, leaving none available to ferry the dead. Jane decided to take up the hammer of the War Thor to help aid Odinson to defeat Malektih. It works, but the hammer transforms into the All-Weapon, transforming Jane into the last Valkyrie. Since this is essentially an origin story, much of the book is taken up with Jane learning about her new powers and coming to terms with a double life: as Dr. Jane Foster working at a hospital and her new calling as a Valkyrie. There is just enough action to spice up the formulaic plot, and the artwork is simply stunning (what you see on the cover is what you get inside). Just as she did as Thor, Jane must wrestle with being a literal Goddess and maintaining her ties to humanity. This is a great new character that I enjoy enough to buy the single issues, and hope she gets a long series run. Highly recommended. ( ) Valkyrie: Jane Foster Vol 1 1. It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age.

I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. When a thunderbolt struck Earth, people said that Thor had flung down his hammer. Mjollnir did not only do harm, though. It also had protective powers and people wore small copies of it as jewellery to keep them safe and bring good luck. Sif Thor was married to Sif, who was famous for her pure gold, flowing hair. She was a goddess of fruitfulness and plenty.

That must be the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (fig. 1)! This paper will explore Marvel’s Squirrel Girl character, from her introduction as a joke character to her 2015 The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl ​ comic series which is being harold as being extremely empowering. This paper aims to understand why a hero like Squirrel Girl would be harold and celebrated by fans, while other female heroes with feminist qualities like Captain Marvel or the New Almighty Thor might be receiving not as much praise. Squirrel Girl was created by Will Murray and artist Steve Ditko. Despite both of them having both worked for Marvel and DC, and having written stories about fan favorites like Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and others, they are most known for creating Squirrel Girl, also known as Doreen Green. Her powers include superhuman strength, a furry, prehensile tail (roughly 3-4 feet long), squirrel-like buck teeth, squirrel-like retractable knuckle claws, as well as being able to communicate with squirrels and summon a squirrel army. She was first introduced in 1991, where she ambushed Iron Man in attempt to impress him and convince him to make her an Avenger. That’s when they were attacked one of Marvel’s most infamous and deadly villains, Doctor Doom.     Thor’s Return of the Giant Geirrod’s Red-Hot Missile Seen in a Cosmic Context EMILY LYLE University of Edinburgh Abstract Discussion of the specific episode is preceded by a brief presentation of current theory concerning Indo-European myth in its cosmological framework to provide context. In the cosmological view sketched by Michael Witzel inThe Origins of the World’s Mythologies, the hero/young god must engage in a series of feats to create the conditions for human life to flourish. I have suggested that the conditions before the hero’s actions in the Indo-European context are envisaged as the extremes: too close; too hot; too dry; and too wet. It is argued that this particular threat is ‘too hot’ and comes from a giant figure who is one of the old gods, probably identifiable as Odin. When Geirrod throws a red-hot missile at Thor, Thor catches it and kills the giant when he sends it back. The related stories of Thor’s visit to Utgarthaloki and Thorstein’s visit to Geirrod are also treated, and attention is drawn to Welsh and Irish parallels which make an equivalence between thrown weapon and destructive gaze. It is suggested that the story may culminate in the motif of eye as star found separately.     Hidden Heroines: The Portrayal of Women in American Superhero Comics By: Esmé Smith Junior Research Project Seminar Introduction The first comic books came out in the 1930s. Superhero comics quickly became one of the most popular genres. Today, they remain incredibly popular and influential. I have been interested in superhero comics for several years now, but one thing I often noticed was that women generally had much smaller roles than men and were also usually not as powerful. Female characters got significantly less time in the story devoted to them than men, and most superhero teams only had one woman, if they had any at all. Because there were so few female characters it was harder for me to find a way to relate to these stories and characters. If I wanted to read a comic that centered around a female hero I had to spend a lot more time looking for it than if I wanted to read about a male hero. Another thing that I noticed was that when people talk about the history of superhero comics, and the most important and influential superheroes, they almost only talk about male heroes. Wonder Woman was the only exception to this. This made me curious about other influential women in comics and their stories. Whenever I read about the history of comics I got plenty of information on how the portrayal of superheroes changed over time, but it always focused on male heroes, so I was interested in learning how women were portrayed in comics and how that has changed.
