These tests can also be re- ferred to as DNA screenings, cancer screenings, and hereditary tesng, to name a few. The representaves go to senior centers, senior housing, health fairs, and even parking lots to convince people to let them take a cheek swab for tesng. They adverse on TV and online. They promise that the results will help recipients avoid diseases or find the right medicaons. All they ask for in return is the person’s Medicare number. While this may sound harmless, in reality it is dangerous. These companies can steal people’s medical identy and falsely bill Medicare, draining the system of needed funds. Tests ordered under these circumstances are unnecessary and could lead to confusion about someone’s health condion. Because confusion exists regarding Medicare’s coverage for genec tests for cancer and other condions, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a fraud alert on the topic. It advises the public to be suspicious of any- one who offers free genec tesng and then requests their Medicare number. The OIG’s fraud alert also states that a physician that a person knows and trusts should approve any requests for genec tesng. In fact, federal regulaons state that diagnosc tests must be ordered by the physician who is treang the beneficiary T in other words, the person’s own doctor. A doctor who has never met or examined a paent, o en hired by a genec tesng company, should not be signing off on any tests.

Jones: Goodnight Saigon GOODNIGHT SAIGON: BILLY JOEL’S MUSICAL EPITAPH TO THE VIETNAM WAR Morgan Jones* Billy Joel adopted new personae and took on new roles in several songs on both 1982’s The Nylon Curtain1 and his penultimate studio album to date, 1989’s Storm Front.2 In what some have seen as an attempt to reach a more adult audience, to “move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect,”3 Joel put on new hats (literally, at times: his fedora-wearing balladeer appears prominently in the video for “Allentown”) for “Allentown” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’,” “Pressure” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Goodnight Saigon” and “Leningrad.”4 Each of these pairs of songs saw Joel endeavoring to make statements about issues that were bigger than he and his own life, which was in stark contrast to his sources of inspiration for his earlier, more self-centered albums.

  • Middle Class Music in Suburban Nowhere Land: Emo and the Performance of Masculinity
MIDDLE CLASS MUSIC IN SUBURBAN NOWHERE LAND: EMO AND THE PERFORMANCE OF MASCULINITY Matthew J. Aslaksen A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Becca Cragin Angela Nelson ii Abstract Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Emo is an emotional form that attracts a great deal of ridicule from much of the punk and indie music communities. Emo is short for “emotional punk” or “emotional hardcore,” but because of the amount of evolution it has undergone it has become a very difficult genre to define. This genre is well known for its almost whiny sound and its preoccupation with relationship problems and emotional instability. As a result, it is seen by many within the more underground music community as an inauthentic emotionally indulgent form of music. Emo has also very recently become a form that has gained widespread mainstream media appeal with bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Taking Back Sunday, and My Chemical Romance. It is generally consumed by a younger teenaged to early college audience, and it is largely performed by suburban middle class artists. Overall, I have argued that emo represents challenge to conventional norms of hegemonic middle-class masculinity, a challenge which has come about as a result of feelings of discontent with the emotional repression of this masculinity. In this work I have performed multiple interviews that include both performers and audience members who participate in this type of music. The questions that I ask the subjects of my ethnographic research focus on the meaning of this particular performance to both the audience and performers.
