Unemployment Insurance Fraud and Social Security Scammers are using the COVIDR19 pandemic as an oppor- tunity to file fraudulent unemployment claims, o en using someone else’s identy. Scammers may even use the iden- ty of someone who is receiving or applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. SSI applicants and recipients who begin receiving V or ap- pear to begin receiving V State Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits could appear to be ineligible for SSI benefits. They could even appear to be overpaid because of an unemployment claim filed in their name.

These UI fraud schemes are widespread and affect most states. The United States Secret Service is invesgang more than 500 claims in over 40 states related to unemployment fraud.

At Social Security, we’re taking steps to verify whether SSI applicants and recipients are vicms of UI fraud. We will not reduce or terminate your payments due to a fraudulent unemployment claim filed on our behalf. If you suspect you may be a vicm of fraud, report it to your state fraud hotline at www.dol.gov/agencies/eta/UIIDthe . You may also report suspicions of fraud to your local unemployment office.

Remember that scammers always look for a chance to exploit your fears. Don’t fall for their tac- cs V and guard your personal informaon. Please share this informaon with your friends and family V and let’s help each other stay vigilant.

Across the naon genec tesng company representaves are offering “free” genec tests to Medicare beneficiaries. These tests can also be re- ferred to as DNA screenings, cancer screenings, and hereditary tesng, to name a few. The representaves go to senior centers, senior housing, health fairs, and even parking lots to convince people to let them take a cheek swab for tesng. They adverse on TV and online. They promise that the results will help recipients avoid diseases or find the right medicaons. All they ask for in return is the person’s Medicare number.

While this may sound harmless, in reality it is dangerous. These companies can steal people’s medical identy and falsely bill Medicare, draining the system of needed funds. Tests ordered under these circumstances are unnecessary and could lead to confusion about someone’s health condion.

Because confusion exists regarding Medicare’s coverage for genec tests for cancer and other condions, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a fraud alert on the topic. It advises the public to be suspicious of any- one who offers free genec tesng and then requests their Medicare number.

The OIG’s fraud alert also states that a physician that a person knows and trusts should approve any requests for genec tesng. In fact, federal regulaons state that diagnosc tests must be ordered by the physician who is treang the beneficiary T in other words, the person’s own doctor. A doctor who has never met or examined a paent, o en hired by a genec tesng company, should not be signing off on any tests. That’s a red flag.

The SMP recommends that beneficiaries should:

Refuse to give out their personal informaon or accept screening services, including a cheek swab, from someone at a community event, a local fair, a farmer’s market, a parking lot, and/or any other large event. Go to their own doctor to assess their condion, not a doctor on the phone they’ve never met from a compa- ny they don’t know. Always read their Medicare Summary Noce (MSN) or Explanaon of Benefits (EOB). The words “gene analy- sis” or “molecular pathology” as service codes may indicate quesonable genec tesng. Refuse the delivery of any genec tesng kit that was not ordered by their physician. Be suspicious of anyone who offers free genec tesng and then requests their Medicare number. If their personal informaon is compromised, it may be used in other fraud schemes. Contact their local SMP for help. SMPs empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and care- givers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse.

The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) is ready to provide you with the informaon you need to PROTECT yourself from Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse; DETECT potenal fraud, errors, and abuse; and REPORT your concerns. SMPs help educate and empower Medicare beneficiaries in the fight against health care fraud. Your SMP can help you with your quesons, concerns, or complaints about potenal fraud and abuse issues. It also provides informaon and educaonal presentaons.

Significance of Memorial Day 2021 Memorial Day 2021 formally known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday ob- served yearly on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day 2021 is a day that com- memorates all men and women who have died while serving in the military for the United States of America.

Traditions of Memorial Day Traditionally Memorial Day is viewed as a time of honor and remembrance. Throughout the United States it is common to visit cemeteries, particularly military ones, and decorate graves of the deceased with flowers, small flags and wreathes. Other common traditions of Memorial Day 2021 that are still practiced today include the raising the U.S. flag quickly to the tops of flagpoles, slowly lowered to half-mast, and then it is raised again to full height at noon. The lowering of the flag at half- mast is meant to honor the fallen soldiers who have died for their country over the years. While re-raising the flag is meant to symbolize the resolve of the living to carry on the fight for freedom so that the nation's heroes will not have died in vain. On the United States Capitol Building's West Lawn, a Memorial Day concert is held annually and is broadcasted live around the country. Additionally, there are thou- sands of Memorial Day 2021 parades all across the country in cities small and large. Many will wear or put on a display of red poppies on this day as a symbol of fallen soldiers. This tradition grew out of the famous poem by Canadian John McCrae known as ‘In Flander's Fields', where Moina Michael conceived an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war.
