HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE Established in 1879, is eponymous with generations of educated, enlightened and empowered women who have excelled in every sphere. Starting with the first women graduates of the , and who went on to become the first Indian female Principal of Bethune College and the first practicing female doctor respectively, the institution has been the one of the flagship colleges of the Government of West Bengal in terms of quality driven education. The college has been twice accredited with the 'A' Grade by NAAC. Recently the institution was ranked 50th at the national level and 5th at the state level by the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF). This also made it the only Government college in West Bengal to feature within top 100 colleges of the country. The college boasts of alumna like Pritilata Waddedar, the celebrated revolutionary and Dr. Ashima Chatterjee, the renowned scientist. In the recent past, students like Dr. Aditi Sen De, the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award winner, Dr. Nina Gupta, a mathematical prodigy who solved the unresolved 'Zariski Cancellation Problem' and Priyadarshini Das,national level table tennis player who is ranked 6th as per Table Tennis Federation of India in the Youth Women Table Tennis Players category, have made the college very proud. The college also boasts of eminent and erudite scholars who served in the capacity of lecturers at different times. Among the luminaries we have Baboo Shashi Bhushan Dutt, Kamini Ray, Krishna Chandra Bhattacharya and Sri Gopinath Bhattacharya, Sri Sushobhan Sarkar and many others. Stalwarts like Sir , Lady Abala Basu, Sri Radha Binode Pal have served as committee members of the Governing Body of the college at different times. Today the college has a dedicated team of teachers who consistently upgrade and update themselves through active participation in research, publications, seminars and workshops. The earliest Honours Courses offered in the college under the regulation of the University of Calcutta were in English and Sanskrit in 1917. In 1923, the college got affiliation at the I.Sc. level and Mathematics and Philosophy were added to the list of Honours subjects. Today, the college has affiliation in 16 Honours subjects, and 6 Post Graduate courses. Bethune College has a record of consistent and excellent academic results. Many students, since the inception of the college, have topped University merit lists and won many medals and honours from the University. During the session 2018-19 as many as 126 students obtained First Class marks. Special mention must also be made of 34 of our students who secured ranks at the university level in the B.A. / B. Sc Honours Final Examination 2018. The college has received a grant from DST-FIST that provides aids to strengthen teaching and research facilities in all science departments of the college, especially in Postgraduate Departments. In addition to that, the college has also received a considerable amount under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). Bethune College is the foremost among the colleges in West Bengal to have been selected for this programme. With the present total roll strength (Arts and Science together) approximately 1300 and the number of sanctioned posts in teaching at 115, Bethune College continues its journey as the pioneer institution of women's education, spanning a period of 140 years.
