Chapter 1 Entertainment for the Whole Family! You have to wonder if Michael McCambridge ever got to watch a hockey game before he ended up with somebody’s, well, you know. His mother, Charlestown Chiefs owner Anita McCambridge, wasn’t above violence in hockey as long as she could make a profi t from it, but she’d be damned if she would ever allow her children to watch the sport. Kids are impressionable, you see. They might stick up a bank. Heroin. You name it. ImagineCOPYRIGHTED Anita’s horror at learning MATERIALthat the members of her former hockey team, the scourge of the Federal League, over time had evolved but not necessarily changed; they’re still the face of goon hockey at its peak. But, strangely, they’ve also become the epitome of family-friendly entertainment. The Hanson Brothers were initially shunned and mocked by their disapproving teammates. Today, however, they are idolized by millions of fans around the world, from 82-year-old legend Gordie Howe to children whose parents weren’t even born when the Hansons stepped onto the War Memorial ice to com- mence what fans have dubbed “the greatest shift in hockey history.” Go ahead, Google it. You’ll see. It’s diffi cult to explain the transformation of the Hansons from “retards” and “criminals” to icons who still tour North American arenas every year, dispensing their special brand of tough, in-your-face hockey, without having changed a whole lot about their style.

  • The Risks and Rewards of Sports Lit and Other Bait-And-Switch Courses
Winter/Spring THE CEA FORUM 2013 The Risks and Rewards of Sports Lit and other Bait-and- Switch Courses Colin Irvine Augsburg College 1st Quarter: “If you build it, they will come.” ~Field of Dreams “How many of you love literature?” I asked this last January on the first day of my Sports and Literature course. It was 8:00 AM sharp, and I was staring at what seemed to be a sullen group of fifteen students who were, apparently, being held against their will. In the middle row (the first was empty), two hands went up cautiously, the students raising them looking about as if realizing that they, unlike their peers beside and behind them, were the only ones in town to volunteer for the draft. After a dramatic pause, I then asked, “And how many of you love sports?” I had tried to pose the question with a hint of intrigue in my voice, as if I was up to something pretty dang special, something along the lines of free tickets to the Super Bowl for everyone. Unfazed and, it seemed, possibly unplugged, the other students lazily raised their hands, as if they knew the question was coming and were hoping to earn an extra credit point or two for playing along. Then, one of the literature lovers spoke up, saying, “Wait. What? I didn’t know there were two questions. Can I change my answer?” This was not an auspicious start to the semester, and I felt (and likely looked) not a little unlike Walter Matthau standing in front of his players on the first day of practice.

If he can go to his right and hit the broad side of a barn, that'll do all his talking for him. - Big Leaguer, 1953 This reassuring voice-over, in reference to New York Giants minor league prospect Chuy Ramon Santiago Aguilar, sums up nicely a fundamental tenet of baseball ideology: race, ethnicity, and cultural heritage do not matter. All are welcome to participate in the national pastime. All will be treated equally. All that matters is how one plays the game. Such has been the promise of Amer- ica, as well, articulated in the values and aspirations of this, its national pas- time. Of course, this has not been baseball's true history, nor America's.

  • The Shifting of Chow Yun-Fat's Star Image Since 1997
7 Translocal Imagination of Hong Kong Connections: The Shifting of Chow Yun-fat’s Star Image Since 1997 Lin Feng Anyone who is interested in Hong Kong cinema must be familiar with one name: Chow Yun-fat (b. 1955). He rose to film stardom in the 1980s when Hong Kong cinema started to attract global attention beyond East Asia. During his early screen career, Chow established a star image as an urban citizen of modern Hong Kong through films such as A Better Tomorrow/Yingxiong bense (John Woo, 1986), City on Fire/Longhu fengyun (Ringo Lam, 1987), All About Ah-Long/A Lang de gushi (Johnnie To, 1989), God of Gamblers/Du shen (Wong Jing, 1989), and Hard Boiled/Lashou shentan (John Woo, 1992). Many Hong Kong film critics claim that Chow’s popularity among local audiences is deeply tied to the rising awareness of Hong Kong’s local identity under the context that the city was undergoing transition from being a British colonial city to becoming the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in 1997 (Sek Kei et al. 2000). However, after over a decade of prosperity in the 1980s and early 1990s, Hong Kong cinema has been in a long period of recession. Mo Jianwei (2008) notes that the local film industry’s annual production dropped by nearly 40 per cent, from 242 films in 1993 to 150 in 2000. The decline of Hong Kong cinema saw a number of local stars and film-makers migrating overseas. Following his friends and long-time collaborators John Woo, Ringo Lam and Terence Cheung, who moved to America in the early 1990s, Chow also announced his decision to continue his career in Hollywood in 1995.

Eine Visualisierung verborgener und ver- trauter Aspekte der amerikanischen Kultur«. This essay highlights a number of Hollywood sport films from the 1970s focusing on national and personal iden- tity issues. Against the backdrop of contemporary history, the meaning of sports and film, and its pop cultural intertwinement becomes transparent re- vealing a basic pattern. Aspects come into the picture which from a European perspective seem both familiar and, in a way, hidden. Besides being great en- tertainment, sport films like North Dallas Forty (1979), Semi-Tough (1977) or The Bad News Bears (1976) have the quality to serve as a rich and meaningful archive of visual sources for research in the humanities.
