DEVIN BRYSON Abstract: The Senegalese social movement Y’en a Marre formed in 2011 in response to political stagnation and a lack of key public services. It played a decisive role in defeating incumbent president Abdoulaye Wade in his unconstitutional reelection campaign in 2012. This article considers the movement within the context of postcolonial Senegalese cultural politics. After a brief survey of the recent forms of hip-hop engagement with social issues in other African countries, this study presents Y’en a Marre as articulating a social identity, a collective movement, and a cultural/musical form that are distinct from these other examples of hip-hop activism because they are continuations of a specifically Senegalese hybrid of art and social engagement imagined first by Senghor. Y’en a Marre is a culminating articulation of various trends within post-independence Senegalese culture by bridging the divide between tradition and modernity, between the national and the local, between elders and youth. Y’en a Marre combatted the threat to Senegal’s prized political stability, and has continued to challenge social and political stagnation, by reconfiguring, but also confirming, Senegalese cultural philosophy for a diverse, inclusive audience. Introduction In the summer of 2011, when President Abdoulaye Wade announced his intention to seek an unprecedented third term in the presidential office and began tinkering with the two-term limit of the constitution to assure his re-election in 2012, Senegalese society was forced into an unwelcomed and unusual position. -

Part 3 Specialized Agencies and Other Bodies Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), established in 1945, is a UN specialized agency that provides global data and expertise on agriculture and nutrition, fisheries, forestry, and other food and agriculture- related issues. FAO is the UN system’s largest autonomous agency, with headquarters in Rome, and 78 country offices and 15 regional, sub-regional, and liaison offices, including one located in Washington, D.C. Jacques Diouf (Senegal), Director-General of FAO, is serving his second six-year term. FAO’s highest policy-making body, the biennial General Conference, comprises all 187 FAO member countries plus the European Commission. The General Conference determines FAO policy and approves FAO’s regular program of work and budget. Each biennial Conference elects a 49-member Council that meets at least three times between regular Conference sessions to make recommendations to the General Conference on budget and policy issues. The North America region, which comprises the United States and Canada, is allocated two seats on the Council and one seat each on FAO’s Program, Finance, and Constitutional and Legal Matters (CCLM) Committees. Through December 2005, the United States holds the North American seat on the Finance and Joint Staff Pension Committees; Canada holds the North American seat on the CCLM and Program Committees. In 2004, the United States continued to stress more efficient use of scarce resources and greater program effectiveness; support for FAO’s normative work; improvement of emergency needs assessments and response capabilities; and continued pressure on the organization to work proactively to hire and retain more staff from traditionally underrepresented countries. -

It is done to find out whether the immigration experience has affected the cultural perceptions of women, in particular their views about female circumcision (FC). Questions are focused on what exactly has changed in their lives that resulted in a change of attitude or behavior. Three focus groups of women of different age groups participated in the research. One woman of each group was interviewed in depth. Open ended questions and semi structured interviews were conducted. Participants were allowed to ask questions and answer questions during the meetings. Debates around gender relations and family relations inside the homes were quite useful to the analysis of information gathered during lengthy interviews with individual women. -

Personal aspirations for higher education, access to jobs and social advancement, probably constituted the driving force of Sawaba’s rank and file. Lured by the party leader, Djibo Bakary, with promises of scholarships abroad, they went to the far corners of the world, for what turned out to be guerrilla training. The leadership’s motivations were grounded in a personal desire for political power, justified by a cocktail of militant nationalism, Marxism-Leninism and Maoist beliefs. Sawaba, however, failed to grasp the weakness of its domestic support base. The mystifying dimensions of revolutionary ideologies may have encouraged Djibo to ignore the facts on the ground and order his foot soldiers to march to their deaths. -

B.A. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1994 ARCHITECTURAL RETENTION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN AFRICAN DESIGN IN THE WORKS OF ARCHITECT DEMAS NWOKO, Major Advisor: Dr. Daniel Black Thesis dated May 2007 The purpose of this research was to examine elements of traditional African architecturai design in fhe works of Demas Nwoko. These elements remain aesthetically - and functionally valuable; hence, their inclusion in the development of modern African residential architecture. The research simultaneously explores the methodology Nwoko has created to apply his theory of comfort design in architecture, as well as the impact of traditional Afi-ican culture and European culture on modem African residential design. The methodology used is visual analysis, as several of Nwoko's buildings were visited, photographed and analyzed for the application of his design ideology of New Culture. The three elements of design examined are his approach to space design that supports lifestyle and achieves comfort; artistic application that reflects African aesthetic values in color, motif and design patterns; and his use of building materials, that not only provide comfortable interiors in a tropical climate, but are affordable and durable. The research concludes with recommendations and contributions to the discourse on modern Afiican design and offers the findings for fwther research and development of African and Diaspora communities. The findings expose the intrinsic value of culture and architectural retention in the evolution of modem architecture in Africa and the Diaspora. Truth, Reconciliation & Reparations Commission (TRRC) Digest Edition 9 #MeToo #SurvivingMelville #IamToufah Presented by: © 2020 ANEKED & The Point Newspaper 1| Photos: ©Jason Florio The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) is mandated to investigate and establish an impartial historical record of the nature, causes and extent of violations and abuses of human rights committed during the period of July 1994 to January 2017 and to consider the granting of reparations to victims and for connected matters. It started public hearings on 7th January 2019 and will proceed in chronological order, examining the most serious human rights violations that occurred from 1994 to 2017 during the rule of former President Yahya Jammeh. While the testimonies are widely reported in the press and commented on social media, triggering vivid discussions and questions regarding the current transitional process in the country, a summary of each thematic focus/event and its findings is missing. The TRRC Digests seek to widen the circle of stakeholders in the transitional justice process in The Gambia by providing Gambians and interested international actors, with a constructive recount of each session, presenting the witnesses and listing the names of the persons mentioned in relation to human rights violations and – as the case may be – their current position within State, regional or international institutions. Furthermore, the Digests endeavour to highlight trends and patterns of human rights violations and abuses that occurred and as recounted during the TRRC hearings. In doing so, the TRRC Digests provide a necessary record of information and evidence uncovered – and may serve as “checks and balances” at the end of the TRRC’s work.
