    No. 47 Summer 2017 A home away from home For 81 year-old veteran Jaibahadur Sunuwar, the hilly terrain Jai outside his old house surrounding his home recently became too much for him. Jai had lived in the hills of Nepal, over 2,000 meters above sea level, since he returned from his seven years serving with the 7th Gurkha Rifles in what was then called Malaya, back in 1963. To put the elevation of his home in perspective, the summit of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles sits at 1,345 meters above sea level. Living alone Unfortunately, Jai lost his wife in 2010, after which, as is often the case for widowers in Nepal, he went to live with his eldest son and his family.   • Gurkha Memorial Park Dharan
    GURKHA MEMORIAL PARK DHARAN The Gurkha Memorial Park is located north west of Dharan bazaar. It nestles on a verdant 600-meter-high ‘Machha Mara Danda’ about 4 km from ‘Mangalbare’. A small river, Sardu Khola, has to be crossed to get there. The local governing body has already sanctioned construction of a bridge over Sardu Khola as well as a motorable road up to the park. This may take 4 years to be fully completed. For now, there is a rough unpitched road suitable for 4-wheel drive vehicles and cars with high ground clearance that leads up to the park. Although the idea of establishing a memorial park was brought up by GAESO in 2007, it never got off the ground. Ten years later, in 2017, a committee of 11 members, comprising of retired Gurkha Officers and all ranks and members of the Gurkha Contingent Singapore Police Force (GCSPF), was formed to take up the task under the chairmanship of Captain Hari Bahadur Limbu 10 GR. The aim of the Gurkha Memorial Park is to preserve the legacy of Brigade of Gurkhas in Dharan for posterity before it is forgotten and lost forever. Historically, Dharan hosted the Brigade of Gurkhas recruiting depot for Eastern Nepal from 1960 until its closure in 1989. (I, too, had passed through its hallowed gates in 1973). It is also the place where a large number of former Brigade personnel, mostly from Eastern Nepal, chose to settle on retirement.

    BURMA CAMPAIGN FACT SHEET VJ75 VJ Day 15th August 1945 Brief Overview 15th August each year is commemorated as Victory over Japan Day. The Burma campaign started with the Japanese invasion of Burma on 15th December 1941 and immediately the strength and manoeuvrability of the Japanese gave them the upper hand. A re-organisation of the British, Indian, Burmese and Gurkha battalions early in 1942 saw Major General “Bill” Slim arrive to command Burma Corps and conduct a hard-fighting retreat through Burma to beyond its borders with India. The 17th Indian Division containing six Gurkha Battalions was pivotal to Slim’s plans. Following this withdrawal, the troops were reinforced, retrained and resupplied and Slim, now Lieutenant General and 14th Army Commander, oversaw the heroic battles around Imphal and Kohima in the early spring and summer of 1944. Chindit Operations and offensives in the Arakan part of western Burma had played a significant part in disrupting Japanese plans to invade further into India. Having turned the tide, Slim’s 14th Army drove the Japanese back through Burma until their surrender was announced on 15th August 1945. Such was the level of engineering, communication and logistical support that Slim’s plans worked well and saw the Japanese defeated. The Battle Honours of The Royal Gurkha Rifles record these epic battles including, Sittang. Imphal, Mandalay, Meiktila, Tamandu, Chindits and many more. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded to Gurkha Regiments for Burma. In May 1943 Havildar Gaje Ghale (2/5RGR) was awarded the Victoria Cross for an action in the Chin Hills. Three more Victoria Crosses would be awarded for the fighting around Imphal, while two would be awarded for the Arakan and three as Chindits.
