'0&'#8145 Nick Derba makes the transformation from player to coach this fall as he joins the UMaine baseball coaching sta!. Derba joins Derba has been hired as the Black Bears’ No. 2 assistant a"er spending last sea- son as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, Manhattan College. UMaine Staff Derba replaces former UMaine standout Billy Cather, who spent four seasons on the sta!, the last three as a full-time coach. Cather had returned to his hometown of Worcester, Mass., to work with his father at #e Strike Zone. He was just recently hired at Lesley Univerisity as their Head Baseball Coach. “Having coached Nick at Manhattan College and watching his professional ca- reer, he has a tremendous work ethic, character and the ability to be a top-notch teach- er,” Trimper said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge from the college and professional side of baseball.” At Manhattan, Derba was a three-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference catcher for the Jaspers. He was a 30th-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2007 and spent six seasons in the organization, including parts of three seasons with Triple-A Memphis in the Paci$c Coast League. #e native of College Point, N.Y., graduated from Manhattan with a Bachelor of Science in biology and minors in chemistry and psychology. Needing to win twice to advance, Lawrence returned to the mound to face Binghamton on just one day rest. He pitched into the sixth inning, allowing just one run to earn his school record 11th victory of the season. Senior shortstop Michael Fransoso was named the America East Player of the Mr. Paul Cook Ms. Lila Stevens Year, while Tommy Lawrence, who had set and America East record for wins in conference play, was named the Mr. Paul Hannigan & Ms. Jane Hannigan Ms. Lois Stone America East Pitcher of the Year. Head coach Steve Trimper was named the America East Coach of the year. Mr. Paul M. Davis Ms. Margaret Spaulding Mr. Pawel Sokolowski Ms. Marina Silva !e majority of Maine’s starters earned America East recognition. In addition to Fransoso and Lawrence, Mr. Peter Devries Ms. Nancy Heath Mike Connolly at catcher and Eric White earn spots on the America East First Team. Connolly at pitcher, Troy Mr. Peter Hill & Ms. Vikki Hill Ms. Pamela Joy Black, Brian Doran, and Sam Balzano were all named to the America East Second Team. Connolly became the "rst Mr. Peter Huston & Dawn Huston Ms. Sandy Knowlton-Grieco player in America East history to be named to All-Conference teams in the same year at di%erent positions.
