3 Panthers Look to Build Off Record-Breaking Season

"He's the best freshman pitcher we have recruited, as far as talent," said Schrage. Sobkowiak was a three-time conference player-of-the­ year and pitched on two AAU Junior Olympic teams. Junior Dave Bourland, a transfer from Waldorf JC, is expected to be the closer. "Bourland is a converted and possesses a strong arm," said Schrage. Sophomore Chad Wiltgen is a transfer from Arizona and might find a spot in the starting rotation. "He has a great arm and has the physical tools to be a good MVC pitcher and we look for him to have a big season," said Schrage. Others battling for spots in the outfield are junior Chad Barnes and Cory Thorson along with sophomore Ryan McGuire. "Barnes is a very strong left-handed hitter while Thorson and McGuire give us added depth," said Schrage. Barnes is a tran fer from Simp on College and Thorson from North Iowa Area Community College, where he was an all-subregion . McGuire played at Black Hawk College. Senior Jeff Johannsen returns as the lone returning starting pitcher after fini shing 6-3 last ea on with a 3.63 ERA. He had fi ve complete games with three shutout while holding the opposition to a .224 batting average. Included in hi wins were victories over Florida International, Southwest Missouri State and Wichita State. "Johannsen will anchor our pitching staff," added Schrage. "He knows how to win big games and we look for him to continue his success." From an experience standpoint, the next three pitchers are sophomore Scott Brickman, Kevin Briggeman and Scott Hoey. All three pitched last eason for the Panthers. "We expect Jeff Johannsen Brickman to move into the rotation and be a solid performer. Briggeman is the most improved pitcher on the staff and could start and Hoey will anchor our bullpen as the set-up man," said Schrage. Already under Schrage's guidance at Northern Iowa, the baseball program has moved to the MVC, to a new home fi eld in a former minor league facility in neighboring Waterloo, has li ve radio broadcasts of home and away games and has nearl y doubled the progam's financial support. He has had eight players play , including two players drafted. Schrage came to Northern Iowa in the summer of 1990 after leading Waldorf College in Forest City, IA, to the junior college sub-regional championship game twice in three seasons. In three years with the Warriors, he posted a 62-67 record and sent two of his players on to be drafted by professional teams. A nati ve of Oak Park, Ill. , Schrage was a fo ur-year starter in center fi eld for the Creighton Blue Jays. He led the M issouri Valley in hitting in 1982 with a .400 batting average and fo l­ lowed that up with a .433 mark the next season. He earned Missouri Valley all-conference honors in 1982 and was named to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-Ameri can Team in 1983. His .433 average in 1983 ranks him seventh on Creighton's all-time -season li st while the .400 clip in 1982 ranks 12th. Schrage led the club in stolen bases in 1980 with 15, triples in 198 1 with three and hits in 1982 with 66. Schrage is currently sixth in career hitting at Creighton with a .358 average, ranks fourth in stolen bases with 62 and is ninth in games played with 199. Schrage's first collegiate coachi ng experience came as a graduate assistant at Biscayne College in Miami in 1984 befo re he returned to his alma mater a an assistant coach to 6 Ken Misfeldt joined the Northern Iowa coaching staff three years ago and will serve his third season as the Panthers' top as i tant as well as hitting instructor and infield coach. Prior to arriving at UNI, Misfeldt was an assistant at Wayne State College in Nebraska from 1991-92 where the Wildcats posted a pair of 25-23 seasons. He served as the infield coach both years and his 1992 posted the best in the school' s history with a .979 mark. His college playing experience includes one year at Hutchinson (Kan.) Junior College and two years at Northwest Missouri State as a third and first ba eman. He also played 11 years of semi-professional baseball, two of which ended in state championships (1985 & 1987) with Lincoln Runza. A native of , Neb., Misfeldt received his master's degree in sports management from Wayne State in 1993 after obtaining his bachelor' degree in journali m from Northwest Missouri State in 1981. He and his wife, Debbie, have four daughters- Molly, Meggie, Morgan and Mattie.

Ken Misfeldt

Beginning his first season at Northern Iowa is graduate assistant coach Randy Wee. Wee, a 1993 graduate of UNI with a bachelor of arts degree in social science education, will work with the as well as field maintenance, academic counseling, practice organization and fundraising. He also has a associate arts degree from Des Moines Area Community College and is working in the master's program in sports psychology at Northern Iowa. Wee was head coach at Iowa Falls High School for the 1993-95 seasons, where his team finished 20-6 in his first year, won the North Central Conference championship and finished second at the state tournament. The 1994 team finished 19-9 with second-place finishes in the conference and district tournament. Last season, Iowa Falls was 17-15 and district runner-up as Wee coached three all-state and eight all-district selections. Prior to coaching baseball , Wee was an assistant sophomore boys' basketball coach at Urbandale (Iowa) High School for two seasons and wide receiver and runnings backs coach at Des Moines Randy Wee Roosevelt High School for the 1994 season. J Wee also coached sophomore baseball at Cedar Falls High in 1992 and coached football and basket­ ball at West Des Moines and Stillwell Junior High. He has coached at the Iowa State Winter Baseball Camp as well as at the Johnston Baseball Clinics. A native of Ankeny, Iowa, he played on the 1987 4A state runner team at Ankeny High School. He also played at Des Moines Area Community College from 1987-89 where his team compiled a 86-32 record and was ranked in the top 20 both years. He is married to Nicole Needham Wee.

Also in his first at Northern Iowa is volunteer assistant coach Mark Roering. Roering, a 1994 graduate of the University of Iowa, will work with the . He is working on a second bachelor of arts degree in secondary education at UNI. Roering earned his first degree in psychology. Roering coached in high school the past four years, including Sioux City Heelan and Iowa City Regina. He was the pitching coach at Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa last season. Roering is a native of Sioux City, Iowa.

A 10-minute drive from the orthern Iowa campus, Riverfront Stadium had been the home of profe sional baseball in Waterloo ince 1948. The city-owned facility wa home to the San Diego Padre Cla A franchi e in the Midwe t League until two ea ons ago when the Waterloo Diamonds became the Springfield (Ill.) Sultan in April, 1994. Seating capacity is 4,277 with di tance to the double decked outfield fence mea uring 330 feet down the left­ and right-field lines, 360 feet in the power alley and 390 to center.
