The pair began working together as a team in 1975 and they quickly became Jamaica’s leading, and most distinctive, rhythm section. They have played on numerous releases, including recordings by U- Roy, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Culture and Black Uhuru, while Dunbar also made several solo albums, all of which featured Shakespeare. They have constantly sought to push back the boundaries surrounding the music with their consistently inventive work. Dunbar, nicknamed ‘Sly’ in honour of his fondness for Sly And The Family Stone, was an established figure in Skin Flesh And Bones when he met Shakespeare. Dunbar drummed his first session for Lee Perry as one of the Upsetters; the resulting ‘Night Doctor’ was a big hit both in Jamaica and the UK. He next moved to Skin Flesh And Bones, whose variations on the reggae-meets-disco/soul sound brought them a great deal of session work and a residency at Kingston’s Tit For Tat club. Sly was still searching for more, however, and he moved on to another session group in the mid-70s, the Revolutionaries. This move changed the course of reggae music through the group’s work at Joseph ‘Joe Joe’ Hookim’s Channel One Studio and their pioneering rockers sound.

30 Jahre UB 40 (Produktions-Nr. L50) für Montag, 23.6.2008 LEXIKADIO - Opener Hallo und Herzlich Willkommen zur besten Mittagszeit hier bei Lexikadio. Zusammen mit der Sendung Käpt´n Momos Ragga Mix gibt es heute bis 14 Uhr Reggae-Musik zu hören. Das kommt nicht von ungefähr, denn in diesen Tagen besteht die englische Gruppe UB 40 seit 30 Jahren. Grund genug einmal mehr über die Jungs von UB 40 zu sagen und deren Musik zu spielen. Den Anfang macht eine Instrumentalnummer, die heißt NKOMO A GO GO und ist aus dem Jahr 1984. UB 40 - Nkomo A Go Go (1984) UB40 steht eigentlich in England für die Abkürzung: “Unemployment Benefit Attendance Card” und ist ein Formblatt für einen Antrag auf Arbeitslosenunterstützung. Doch die Stütze brauchen die Musiker von UB40 nicht. Sie frönt auch keinen Starkult und ist eine gemischtrassige Gruppe von Leuten, die eines gemeinsam haben: Die Liebe zur Reggae-Musik. Natürlich keinen hundertprozentig reinen Reggae, sondern einen englischen “weißen” Reggae mit “schwarzem” Feeling. ALL I WANT TO DO war im Oktober 1986 auf Platz 38 der britischen Charts. UB 40 - ALL I WANT TO DO (10/86 GB 38) UB40 wurde 1978 in Birmingham gegründet und besteht sowohl aus schwarzen als auch weißen Musikern. Zur Gruppe gehören der Drummer Jim Brown, der sich manchmal auch James Brown nennt, Bassist Earl Falconer, Alto Tenor Saxophonist Brian Travers, Keyboarder Michael Virtue, Trompeter Astro, der eigentlich Terence Wilson heißt, Gitarrist Robin Campbell, Congas-, Trombone- und Percussionspieler Norman Hassan und Rythm-Gitarrist und Lead- Sänger Ali Campbell. UB 40 - IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN (9/94 GB 9) Alle 8 Musiker der Gruppe UB 40 sind in Birmingham, England geboren.
