Review of Selected Literature and Epiphyte Classification
--------- -- ---------· 4 CHAPTER 1 REVIEW OF SELECTED LITERATURE AND EPIPHYTE CLASSIFICATION 1.1 Review of Selected, Relevant Literature (p. 5) Several important aspects of epiphyte biology and ecology that are not investigated as part of this work, are reviewed, particularly those published on more. recently. 1.2 Epiphyte Classification and Terminology (p.11) is reviewed and the system used here is outlined and defined. A glossary of terms, as used here, is given. 5 1.1 Review of Selected, Relevant Li.terature Since the main works of Schimper were published (1884, 1888, 1898), particularly Die Epiphytische Vegetation Amerikas (1888), many workers have written on many aspects of epiphyte biology and ecology. Most of these will not be reviewed here because they are not directly relevant to the present study or have been effectively reviewed by others. A few papers that are keys to the earlier literature will be mentioned but most of the review will deal with topics that have not been reviewed separately within the chapters of this project where relevant (i.e. epiphyte classification and terminology, aspects of epiphyte synecology and CAM in the epiphyt~s). Reviewed here are some special problems of epiphytes, particularly water and mineral availability, uptake and cycling, general nutritional strategies and matters related to these. Also, all Australian works of any substance on vascular epiphytes are briefly discussed. some key earlier papers include that of Pessin (1925), an autecology of an epiphytic fern, which investigated a number of factors specifically related to epiphytism; he also reviewed more than 20 papers written from the early 1880 1 s onwards. -

Microsorum 3 tohieaense can be distinguished from other French Polynesian Microsorum by the combination of sori that are distributed more or less in a single line between the costae and margins, apical pinna wider than lateral pinnae, and round rhizome scales with entire margins. Genetic evidence is also presented for the first time supporting the hybrid origin of Microsorum 3 maximum (Microsorum grossum 3 Microsorum punctatum), and possibly indicating a hybrid origin for the Hawaiian endemic Microsorum spectrum. The implications of hybridization for the taxonomy of microsoroid ferns are discussed, and a key to the microsoroid ferns of the Society Islands is provided. Vegetation Report on the Proposed Blue Hole Cultural, Environmental & Recreation Reserve Report on the Vegetation of the Proposed Blue Hole Cultural, Environmental & Recreation Reserve 1.0 Introduction The area covered by this report is described as the proposed Lot 1 on SP144713; Parish of Alexandra; being an unregistered plan prepared by the C & B Group for the Douglas Shire Council. This proposed Lot has an area of 1.394 hectares and consists of the Flame Tree Road Reserve and part of a USL, which is a small portion of the bed of Cooper Creek. It is proposed that the Flame Tree Road Reserve and part of the USL be transferred to enable the creation of a Cultural, Environmental and Recreation Reserve to be managed in Trust by the Douglas Shire Council. The proposed Cultural, Environmental and Recreation Reserve will have an area of 1.394 hectares and will if the plan is registered become Lot 1 of SP144713; Parish of Alexandra; County of Solander. SOTTILE Hanbury Botanical Gardens, University of Genoa (ITALY); e-mail: [email protected] INTRODUCTION In his garden at La Mortola Thomas Hanbury introduced many species of exotic ferns to experiment their acclimatization and their ornamental potential. An historical research has been carried out on the catalogues of the plants cultivated in the garden; we obtained a list that enabled us to reconstruct, to a certain degree, the history and the dynamics of the original collection. The results of the research can help us to identify the species that could be successfully reintroduced in a project for the restoration of the Fern area. MATERIALS AND METHODS There are five catalogues of the plants cultivated in the garden: Cronemayer (1889) Dinter (1898), Berger (1912), Ercoli et Lorenzi (1938), Campodonico et al. (1996). The comparison of the catalogues required a nomenclatural check of plants names following NCU-3 Pteridophyta (Names in current use for extant plant genera). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The historical research enabled us to compile a list of 98 taxa of Ferns (table 1); this number includes both species and infraspecific taxa, most of them native of tropical and subtropical regions. The first catalogue of Cronemayer (1889) included 49 taxa, Dinter (1898) reported 33 taxa, Berger (1912) 29 species, Ercoli et Lorenzi (1938) 16 taxa; the most recent one (Campodonico et al., 1996) includes 48 taxa.
