Voter Registration

To participate in our budget vote on May 17, 2011, district residents must be registered with the Chemung County Board of Elections. If you are now registered to vote in national, state and local elections, you are set to vote in district elections. If you are not registered with the Board of Elections, you may do one of the following: • Go to the Board of Elections located at 378 South Main Street in Elmira and complete the registration form. Come to the District Office and complete the registration form. • We will forward it to the Board of Elections. The forms must be returned to either the Board of Elections or the District Office by May 3, 2011.

Spirit Week: Homecoming 2010

School Spirit was alive and well in the Heights during Spirit Week on September 4-9. Each day of the week the student body and faculty engaged a theme to illustrate their school spirit. Monday was 80’s retro day which the faculty really enjoyed. Tuesday was crazy hat/hair day. Wednesday was pajama day. On Wednesday night each class competed by decorating a hallway with their assigned color. The sophomores won the hall contest. Thursday was color wars, where each class dressed their color. Friday was orange and blue Spartan day. There was an assembly in the auditorium featuring contests between the four classes. Friday ended with the “flag” football powderpuff game between the junior and senior girls. The seniors prevailed 22-6. Spirit Week concluded on Saturday a hard fought football game against Notre Dame. The sophomores, however, were able to retain the Spirit Jug by winning the 2010 Homecoming class tug-o-war vs. the seniors at halftime. Distance Learning at TAE

Edison High School started its first Distance Learning class this fall. Math Teacher Eileen Cook is collaborating with the Hornell School District to provide students an

opportunity to earn credit for AP Statistics. Classes are held daily in the new Community Room. The students do need to arrive a bit earlier than their peers but are very excited about participating in this unique opportunity.

4 STAR Program Information

STAR is New York State’s School Tax Relief Program that provides a partial exemption from school property taxes. All New Yorkers who own and live in their own home are eligible for a STAR exemption on their primary residence.

There are two parts to the STAR program:

The Basic STAR exemption is available for anyone who owns and lives in his or her own home and earns less than $500,000. Basic STAR works by exempting the first $30,000 of the full value of a home from school taxes.

The Enhanced STAR exemption is available for the primary residences of senior citizens (age 65 and older) with yearly household incomes not exceeding the statewide standard. For qualifying senior citizens, the Enhanced STAR program works by exempting the first $60,100 of the full value of their home from school property taxes. For property owned by a husband and wife, or by siblings, only one of them must be at least 65 years of age as of December 31 of the year in which the exemption will begin to qualify for the Enhanced exemption. Their combined annual income, however, must not exceed the STAR income standard which is $79,050 for the 2011-2012 school levy year.

Senior citizens applying for the Enhanced STAR exemption must demonstrate that the combined income of all of the owners of the property, and of any owner’s spouse who resides on the premises, is no greater than the income standard for the applicable income tax year. You may do this in one of two ways:

Option 1: Traditional method. Submit a copy of your income tax return(s) for the appropriate income tax year to the assessor with your STAR application by the application deadline each year.

Option 2: STAR Income Verification Program. Supply your Social Security Number(s) and authorize the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to verify your income eligibility each year. If you choose this option, you do not need to submit an application and copy of your tax return(s) to the assessor every year. To choose this option, in the initial year you must complete form RP-425-IVP and submit it to the assessor along with a traditional STAR application and the necessary income tax return(s) by the application deadline.

To get your Basic and Enhanced STAR tax cut you must file an application with your local assessor. The application has been made as simple as possible. Property owners who are granted the Basic STAR exemption generally will not need to reapply in subsequent years because the Basic STAR exemption is granted regardless of income. However, Basic STAR recipients will need to notify their assessor if their primary residence changes.

Contact your Town Assessor’s Office below for information about the application process. Forms and information are also available on the Office of Real Property Service web site (www.orps.state.ny.us) or call 1-877-6-STAR-NY (1-877-678-2769). Cohen Garden Club Continues To Grow

The Garden Club at Cohen Elementary has been growing food for 7 years (and counting). The students in the Garden Club have learned how to prepare the soil, plant seeds and plants, control the weeds, and harvest the produce. The cafeteria collects compostable food scraps and the teachers contribute coffee grounds to add to the garden’s compost pile. In the Spring of 2010 the Garden Club had almost 25 students and grew a beautiful garden that produced over 200 lbs. of produce! The garden is funded by a Learn and Serve grant and all food is donated to the local Food Bank.

It has been an exciting few weeks at Cohen Middle School! The students have been busy campaigning for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. This is the first time our middle school has gone through the official process of electing the officers for Student

Exploring career options is a service of Career Development Council that helps students with the transition from high school to the workforce, military, or post secondary education.

The following programs are available to help students obtain career awareness information:

9 Job Shadowing: This program is open to students in grades 10 – 12 to give them the opportunity to spend time with a professional in their field of interest learning more about their career. Students gain knowledge from seeing the work environment, learning the education and training required, the daily routine, and the skills used on the job.

9 Career Panels: Students meet with a number of professionals on specific careers areas such as social work, legal, sports, criminal justice, medical, and business careers in a panel format.

9 Mock Interviews: Practice employment interviews with local business personnel are conducted through various classes to provide interviewing feedback.

9 Career Day: Area professionals speak to the middle school students about their careers. The date for this year’s middle school career day is Thursday, March 24, 2011. Any business professional interested in sharing career information with our students should contact Becky Horton.

9 Career Research: Students will be directed to a host of websites and computer programs that have valuable information to help them assess their interests and aptitudes in learning about career choices.

9 Classroom Speakers: Business professionals speak in various classes to provide students with real world applications to their course curriculum.

9 Business Site Visits: Tours of local businesses can be arranged for individuals or classes to learn more about the business and the range of careers found there.

9 Workforce New York Career Center Registration: Students can register for employment opportunities with the New York State Department of Labor and receive free assistance with job search, resume writing, cover letters, job application material, and career counseling.

Over 500 new books have also been added to the collection for this year and library card. students have been enjoying the new selections. The library lends books on a three week loan and appreciates it when students return their books on time. Applications are available in the TAE library. Students can also donate books through our gift book program in the high school library. We also welcome any donations of magazines for our magazine swap program. Please be sure to remove your address label.

A database password sheet has been sent home with students so that they may access all of the library databases from home. Students can pick up another sheet from the library if necessary.

TAE Key Club Busy This Fall

The TAE Key Club recently helped the Elmira Heights Historical Society spruce up their museum for the village’s Octoberfest celebration. Several girls from the club spent their beautiful Saturday morning cleaning and visiting with some of the “historians” of the community. The museum has some great displays of antiques, as well as school memorabilia that you might find interesting! (The Key Clubbers really enjoyed checking things out while they worked!) The club has big plans for the rest of 2010. They will be helping at the Tanglewood Nature Center’s “Haunted Happenings” event on October 23rd. We will be cleaning up a stretch of Route 14 near the Elmira College Domes on October 30th. Members will be “Trick or Treating for UNICEF” on Halloween. In November, members will be helping the food pantry. December will find the members “bell-ringing” for the Salvation Army, feeding performers and workers at the Arctic League Telethon on December 5th and assisting Elcor residents with Christmas shopping at the Arnot Mall. Our spring schedule has many “holes” to fill. Mr. Richmond’s Participation in Government students have been busy this election season. They attended the Tom Reed – Matt Zeller District 29 Congressional debate at Corning Community College on October 21. Peg Woodard (incumbent) and Bill Fairchild (challenger) both came into class and spoke with students in regards to the District 8 County Legislature seat that they are both running for. Also, Mr. Richmond’s students have all registered to vote and are participating in a national mock election through www.youthleadership.net. The program is run by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.

8 Use this GPS to Estimate the Circumference of the Earth

For most of us, this would be a difficult task. Not for Mrs. Lutz’s Earth Science students at TAE. They have been using GSP units to investigate latitude and longitude, hill slopes, and to calculate the Earth’s circumference. Students got the opportunity to learn how a hand-held GPS unit measures distances, speeds, elevations, and latitude/longitude coordinates by making measurements on the football field. They performed many calculations to convert their measurements to meaningful units and to answer questions like, “How many miles would you have to walk to change your latitude/longitude by a degree?” They then used their measurements to estimate the circumference of the Earth. Some students were able to estimate it to within a few hundred miles! (Quite impressive when the circumference is 24,032 miles!!!) Chelsea Storch & Shelby Yehl

who was awarded a Paul Harris

Fellowship. This is the highest award

that can be bestowed by Rotary to an

individual, in recognition of

outstanding leadership and

contributions to our world. Lori has

volunteered as the Advisor to the

Junior Rotarians and has a kind heart

with all she does.

MARCH OUT HUNGER

Congratulations to all students in the

Heights for participating in the

March Out Hunger campaign. As

part of our Learn & Serve initiatives,

students collected canned goods for

the Samaritan Center and Meals on

Wheels. The students at Cohen

Elementary and Cohen Middle

collected over 500 cans. Edison

Senior Chelsea Morseman collected

over 100 cans from area businesses

and the TAE faculty. Thanks to all

the students for their effort and gift to

our local community.
