Squire, Maud Hunt (1873-1955) and Ethel Mars (1876-1956) by Ruth M. Pettis Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2005, glbtq, inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com American artists and life partners Maud Hunt Squire and Ethel Mars forged distinguished careers in book illustration, painting, and woodblock printing. Émigrées to France, they frequented Gertrude Stein's salons and, during World War I, were among the Provincetown artists working in new methods of printmaking. Maud Squire was born January 30, 1873 in Cincinnati. Her parents encouraged her artistic training, though both had died by the time she was a young woman. At the age of 21, she enrolled in the Cincinnati Art Academy and studied under Lewis Henry Meakin and Frank Duveneck. At the academy she met fellow student Ethel Mars, with whom she would live and travel for the rest of her life. Mars, born in Springfield, Illinois on September 19, 1876, was the only child of a railroad employee and a homemaker. From 1892 to 1897, she studied illustration and drawing at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Squire began her career while still a student, traveling to New York to meet with publishers and exhibiting her work. By 1900 she and Mars were living in New York City, traveling to Europe, and collaborating on illustrating children's books, such as Charles Kingsley's The Heroes (1901). By 1906 they had settled in Paris together. Paris at the turn of the twentieth century had become a magnet for American women with artistic aspirations. As described by artist Anne Goldthwaite, Squire and Mars were prim "Middle Western" girls when they arrived in Paris.

Hawthorne's legacy through focus exhibitions of Charles & Marion Hawthorne and his students Oliver Chaffee, Ross Moffett, Dorothy Lake Gregory, and Agnes Weinrich. Additionally, creative couples from the Henry Hensche School will be shown. As much as Hawthorne advanced his theories on how to see color and paint, he did not tell his students what to paint. It was as much a philosophy on how to see and live life to the fullest as a philosophy of painting. Charles W. Hawthorne wrote "Art is a necessity, beauty we must have in the world.

  • Acquisitions (2 MB PDF)
Collections The museum acquired 193 objects in 2002. Each adds unique quality to the collection, but even among them a few stand out as extraordinary. Grant Wood completed fewer than 40 paintings in his mature style, and the oppor- tunities to acquire them have been rare ever since the artist first came to prominence after the exhibition of his instantly iconic American Gothic. The museum has owned major prints by Wood, but not a painting—until this year, when, miraculously, the great 1940 composition January became avail- able. Not only is this a stunning work in its own right, and one of Wood’s last completed works (he died in 1942), it also relates to a Grant Wood litho- graph in the collection. Other major painting acquisitions included Oedipus at Colonus, the masterpiece of Fulchran-Jean Harriet, a leading figure at the time of the French Revolution whose career was stunted by his early death before the age of 30; Éva Meurier in a Green Dress, by the Symbolist Maurice Denis; and the Surrealist parody Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbre by Max Ernst. The decorative arts and sculpture collections were enriched by a late 18th-century marble, Figure of a Young Girl by François-Nicolas Delaistre, and a striking Limoges vase designed by Georges de Feure in about 1903. A small, elegant 18th-century sword from Switzerland joined the arms and armor collection. Louise Bourgeois’s 1984 white marble sculpture Blind Man’s Buff adds a new dimension to the contemporary collection, and Martin Puyear’s red cedar and pine sculpture Alien Huddle, 1993–95, familiar to many because it was on loan to the museum for a number of years, was officially welcomed as an acquisition, thanks to the generosity of Agnes Gund and Daniel 15 2-Collections.p65 15 6/10/2003, 4:28 PM Max Ernst (German, Shapiro.

  • Edna Boies Hopkins
Edna Boies Hopkins ■ Color Woodblock Prints ■ The technic [sic] of color printing from wood imposes certain conditions—flatness of the masses used and simplicity in their shapes. These conditions are in no sense restrictions. They are rather privileges. Every artist who works in two dimensions strives to attain in his work a beautiful pattern, a mosaic, of simple flat shapes. Color printers, then, have certain difficulties obviated for them but it entails a heavy responsibility. This very flatness and simplicity makes it imperative that shapes and color shall be perfect in their relations. There is no imitation of form to convince the spectator and no illusion with which to deceive him. There is only the most abstract kind of representation. Since there is no subterfuge in the color print vocabulary they must say per- fectly what they have to say. They do this solely with the real tools of the artist, lines, masses and colors, and if you like them, “you don’t know why,” then you are suscep- tible to the highest appeal of art. —Edna Boies Hopkins, Causerie Artistique1 ■ EARLY YEARS dna Bel Beachboard was born in the south Michigan town of Hudson on October 13, E 1872.2 As the daughter of David J. Beachboard, a prominent Hudson citizen and vice president of the Boies State Savings Bank, and his wife, Clotilda C. Sawyer, Edna probably en- joyed a privileged childhood. While no documentation exists of her youth, it is known that in 1887 her older brother, Earl James Beachboard, died of diphtheria at the age of sixteen, making Edna an only child.
