Ratti Antiquus error. Th is volume reunites most of the papers delivered at a conference held during the exhibition, increased with four new chapters. Ten specialists from Belgium, the Netherlands and the United States discuss the book market and its place in society in this transitional period when manuscripts and printed books were produced and used next to one another. Th e contributions are organised in pairs around fi ve topics, whereby in each case one author treats manuscripts and the other printed books: Philip the Fair and his books, art in books, music in books, politics in books, the book market. Contributions by: Renaud Adam, Jean-Marie Cauchies, Marieke van Delft, Lieve De Kesel, Samuel Mareel, Zoe Saunders, Susie Speakman Sutch, Herman Pleij, Rob Wegman, and Hanno Wijsman. Peace and Protection in the Middle Ages xii + 202 p., 150 × 230 mm, 2009, DMRME 1, PB, ISBN 978-0-88844-860-6, approx. € 60 Publication scheduled for December 2009 North American customers are advised to order through University of Toronto Press Th at kings, prelates and even lowly freemen were, under certain specifi ed conditions, capable of off ering protection or “peace” to others, usually their inferiors, is relatively well known. Th at a breach of this protection might entitle, or indeed oblige, the protector to take action against the violator is similarly well understood. However, this protective dynamic has rarely received direct scholarly attention, despite its being evident in an extraordinary range of contexts. Th e emotional aspects of protection – the honour and love associated with the bond it creates, and the shame and anger that accompany its breach – resonate in both heroic and chivalric ideals, whilst in legal fi c- tion at least, the king’s protection or peace would come to underpin the common law of trespass. Such a broad sweep, taking in social, legal, religious and cultural elements, suggests that protection as a concept may have a wider signifi cance than its marginal role in current historiography would indicate. Indeed, the infl uence of protection both in forming social bonds and in providing a framework for the legitimate use of force suggests that the concept could serve as a valuable coun- terpoint to more traditional “institutional” understandings of power. Th is book explores peace and protection as a fundamental motor of medieval society, across a broad geographical and chrono- logical span; brings together literary, legal and historical studies making use of a wide range of approaches; and focuses scholarly attention as never before on the concept of peace and protection viewed in relation to kingsand lords, charity and mercy, and the action of feud and vendetta. • PMMS L'homme Arme' Masses Discography
Missa L’homme armé Discography Compiled by Jerome F. Weber This discography of almost forty Masses composed on the cantus firmus of L’homme armé (twenty- eight of them currently represented) makes accessible a list of this group of recordings not easily found in one place. A preliminary list was published in Fanfare 26:4 (March/April 2003) in conjunction with a recording of Busnoys’s Mass. The composers are listed in the order found in Craig Wright, The Maze and the Warrior (Cambridge and London: Harvard University Press, 2001), p. 288; the list is alphabetical within broad eras. In particular, he discusses Du Fay (pp. 175ff.), Regis (pp. 178ff.), the Naples Masses (pp. 184ff.), and Josquin des Prez (pp. 188ff.). Richard Taruskin, “Antoine Busnoys and the L’Homme armé Tradition,” Journal of AMS, XXXIX:2 (Summer 1986), pp. 255-93, writes about Busnoys and the Naples Masses, suggesting (pp. 260ff.) that Busnoys’s Mass is the earliest of the group and that the Naples Masses are also by him. Fabrice Fitch, Johannes Ockeghem: Masses and Models (Paris, 1997, pp. 62ff.), suggests that Ockeghem’s setting is the earliest. Craig Wright, op. cit. (p. 175), calls Du Fay’s the first setting. Alejandro Planchart, Guillaume Du Fay (Cambridge, 2018, p. 594) firmly calls Du Fay and Ockeghem the composers of the first two Masses, jointly commissioned by Philip the Good in May 1461. For a discussion of Taruskin’s article, see Journal of AMS, XL:1 (Spring 1987), pp. 139-53 and XL:3 (Fall 1987), pp. 576-80. Masters of the Choirboys and the Strategies of their Appoint ment at the Cathedral of Cambrai, 1459-1539. Master of the choirboys (Lat. magister puerorum altaris-, Fr. maître des enfants d'autel) is an interesting object for one who works on a certain musical center in the fifteenth and sixteenth century Europe. Because its primary functions, social status, and criteria are still unfamiliar to us, even if there are many composers who took the position. The article will try to reveal its social status and the policy of appointment, taking as example the cathedral of Cambrai, which has been considered to provide lavish support for music and employ many talented

  • Streaming Music Into Renaissance Studies: the Case of L'homme Armé
explorations in renaissance culture 43 (2017) 109-139 brill.com/erc Streaming Music into Renaissance Studies: The Case of L’homme armé Kevin N. Moll East Carolina University [email protected] Abstract College-level courses devoted to Renaissance culture typically put a premium on incorporating primary sources and artifacts of a literary, art-historical, and historical nature. Yet the monuments of contemporaneous music continue to be marginalized as instructional resources, even though they are fully as worthy both from an aesthet- ic and from a historical standpoint. This study attempts to address that problem by invoking the tradition of early polyphonic masses on L’homme armé – a secular tune used as a unifying melody (cantus firmus) throughout settings of the five-movement liturgical cycle. Beginning by explaining the origins and significance of the putative monophonic tune, the paper then details how a series of composers utilized the song in interestingly varied ways in various mass settings. Subsequently it sketches out a context for mysticism in the liturgical-musical tradition of L’homme armé, and points to some compelling parallels with the contemporaneous art of panel painting, specifically as represented in the works of Rogier van der Weyden. Keywords Franco-Flemish polyphony – mass cycle – cantus firmus – pedagogy – L’homme armé – Rogier van der Weyden – mysticism * This paper is a substantially altered version of the South-Central Renaissance Conference William B. Hunter Lecture, delivered in St Louis, mo on March 3, 2011 with the title “Some Straight-Shooting Observations on the Early L’homme armee Masses.” Because the study is being published in a journal that traditionally has been devoted primarily to non-musical studies, effort has been made to refrain here from overindulgence in specialized musical vo- cabulary and to clarify those terms that are used.

  • Johannes Tinctoris, in His Liber De Arte Contrapuncti
Ockeghem, Binchois, and Du Fay Johannes Tinctoris, in his Liber de arte contrapuncti of 1477, remarked on recent developments in the art of music and placed Johannes Ockeghem at the head of an exalted list of composers whose works exuded divine sweetness: Although it seems beyond belief, there does not exist a single piece of music, not composed within the last forty years, that is regarded by the learned as worth hearing. Yet at this present time, not to mention innumerable singers of the most beautiful diction, there flourish, whether by the effect of some celestial influence or by the force of assiduous practice, countless composers, among them Johannes Ockeghem, Johannes Regis, Antoine Busnoys, Firminus Caron, and Guillaume Faugues, who glory in having studied this divine art under John Dunstable, Gilles Binchois, and Guillaume Du Fay, recently deceased. Nearly all the works of these men exhale such sweetness that in my opinion they are to be considered most suitable, not only for men and heroes, but even for the immortal gods, Indeed, I never hear them, I never study them, without coming away more refreshed and wiser. Born in St-Ghislain in the county of Hainaut (now in Belgium) around 1420, Ockeghem enters the historical record in 1443 as a vicaire-chanteur at the church of Our Lady in Antwerp, a modest appointment appropriate to a young professional singer. By 1446 he had become one of seven singers in the chapel of Charles I, Duke of Bourbon, and in 1451 he joined the musical establishment of Charles VII, king of France.

  • Program Notes
Ockeghem, Busnoys, Regis, Caron & Faugues A month ago we inaugurated Ockeghem@600, a long-term project to perform all the surviving music of Johannes Ockeghem, with a program that explored the relationship between Ockeghem and the two most famous composers of the previous generation, Guillaume Du Fay and, especially, Gilles Binchois. That program suggested the kind of approach Blue Heron will take in Ockeghem@600—not a chronological march through the complete works of a single composer (which would be impossible with Ockeghem anyway, since we don’t know when most of his music was composed), but rather a survey of the entire landscape of music in Europe from the perspective of one musician’s work, extending our gaze about a generation before and after. By the time we wrap up the series around 2020, in time to commemorate Ockeghem’s 600th birthday, more or less (he was born circa 1420), we should all have a better sense of the musical world Ockeghem shared with other composers from one end of the fifteenth century to the other. Today we will hear Ockeghem as the first in a company of five composers whom the theorist and composer Johannes Tinctoris praised as the most accomplished practitioners of modern musical art. At this time…the possibilities of our music have been so marvelously increased that there appears to be a new art, if I may so call it, whose fount and origin is held to be among the English, of whom Dunstable stood forth as chief. Contemporary with him in France were Dufay and Binchoys, to whom directly succeeded the moderns Ockeghem, Busnoys, Regis and Caron, who are the most excellent of all the composers I ever heard.

Schlagel 2008 ABSTRACT The first quarter of the sixteenth century witnessed tightening connections between rhetoric, poetry, and music. In theoretical writings, composers of this period are evaluated according to their ability to reflect successfully the emotions and meaning of the text set in musical terms. The same period also witnessed the rise of the five- and six-voice chanson, whose most important exponents are Josquin des Prez, Pierre de La Rue, and Jean Mouton. The new expanded textures posed several compositional challenges but also offered greater opportunities for text expression. Rhetorical analysis is particularly suitable for this repertory as it is justified by the composers’ contacts with humanistic ideals and the newer text-expressive approach. Especially Josquin’s exposure to humanism must have been extensive during his long-lasting residence in Italy, before returning to Northern France, where he most likely composed his multi- voice chansons.
