Misdirection, is a form of deception in which the attention of an audience is focused on one thing in order to distract its attention from another. Day 24 Aug. 17 – Torshavn, Faroe Islands – VAT Refund – Medical Evacuation Cost The day started with a calm sea, a light breeze, temperature of 55˚F and intermittent sun through broken clouds. The Maasdam was cruising through a series of small islands that are part of the Faroe Island chain. Closer to the harbor were these wind turbines, on the right, which seem to be located in most of the port cities we visit. We got these photos of the city of Torshavn as the Maasdam was being docked. From this distance the housing development up on the hill looked like a typical suburban subdivision scene in the US. The housing down closer to the port looked more like old European style houses with winding streets as shown below About 7:30am the Maasdam was docked at the Cruise Pier in the harbor at Torshavn. The map on the right shows where Torshavn is located in the Faroe Islands. Torshavn is the capital city of the Faroe Islands, Denmark, and is located on the southeastern end of Strymoy Island. In the early 9 th century, the first parliament, called the Althing, was set up. This government was dissolved when the Faroe Islands were incorporated into Norway in 1035, and then reformed in 1380 when Norway was absorbed into Denmark. The town of Torshavn has served as the central place for economic activity, such as fishing, transport and trade, in the Faroe Islands over the years. Touring Torshavn: By 9am we were ready to leave the ship and take a walking tour around Torshavn.

English language. doi: 10.1386/ijia.4.2.365_1 ŁUKASZ STANEK University of Manchester Mobilities of Architecture in the Global Cold War: From Socialist Poland to Kuwait and Back Abstract Keywords This article discusses the contribution of professionals from socialist countries to Gulf architecture architecture and urban planning in Kuwait in the final two decades of the Cold War. socialist Poland In so doing, it historicizes the accelerating circulation of labour, building materials, architectural discourses, images, and affects facilitated by world-wide, regional and local networks. globalization By focusing on a group of Polish architects, this article shows how their work in postmodernism Kuwait in the 1970s and 1980s responded to the disenchantment with architecture knowledge transfer and urbanization processes of the preceding two decades, felt as much in the Gulf as architectural labour in socialist Poland. In Kuwait, this disenchantment was expressed by a turn towards images, ways of use, and patterns of movement referring to ‘traditional’ urbanism, reinforced by Western debates in postmodernism and often at odds with the social realities of Kuwaiti urbanization. Rather than considering this shift as an architec- tural ‘mediation’ between (global) technology and (local) culture, this article shows how it was facilitated by re-contextualized expert systems, such as construction tech- nologies or Computer Aided Design software (CAD), and also by the specific portable ‘profile’ of experts from socialist countries. By showing the multilateral knowledge flows of the period between Eastern Europe and the Gulf, this article challenges diffusionist notions of architecture’s globalization as ‘Westernization’ and reconcep- tualizes the genealogy of architectural practices as these became world-wide.

Establishing Kuwait’s as modern, democratic, and independent nation, paradoxically, depended on a network of international organizations, foreign consultants, and world-renowned architects to build a series of architectural projects with a hybrid of local and foreign forms and functions to produce a convincing image of Kuwait national autonomy. Kuwait nationalism relied on architecture’s ability, as an art medium, to produce a seamless image of Kuwait as a modern country and led to citing it as one of the most democratic states in the Middle East. The construction of all major projects of Kuwait’s nation building followed a similar path; for example, all mashare’e kubra [major projects] of the state that started early 1960s included particular geometries, monumental forms, and symbolic elements inspired by the vernacular life of Kuwait to establish its legitimacy.

  • A Control Architecture for Dynamically Stable Gaits of Small Size Humanoid Robots
A CONTROL ARCHITECTURE FOR DYNAMICALLY STABLE GAITS OF SMALL SIZE HUMANOID ROBOTS Andrea Manni ¤;1, Angelo di Noi ¤ and Giovanni Indiveri ¤ ¤ Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Innovazione, Universit`a di Lecce, via per Monteroni, 73100 Lecce, Italy, Fax: +39 0832 297279, email:fandrea.manni, giovanni.indiveri, [email protected] Abstract: From the 1970's biped robots have had a large attention from the robotic research community. Yet the issue of controlling dynamically stable walking for arbitrary biped robots is still open. We propose a simple control architecture based on the use of the FRI (Foot Rotation Indicator) point and the support polygon. The major advantage of the proposed architecture is that motion planning (and eventually sensor based re-planning (slower feedback loop)) is limited to the leg joints whereas the trunk and arm degrees of freedom are controlled in closed loop (faster feedback loop) to achieve overall dynamic stability. Such architecture allows to decouple the problem of dynamic stable walking in the two relatively simpler problems of gait generation and robot stabilization. This architecture is particularly suited for small size robots having limited onboard computational power and limited sensor suits. The e®ectiveness of the proposed method has been validated through Matlabr simulations and experimental tests performed on a Robovie-MS platform.
