Expanding Families One Pet at a Time

Every dog makes the world a better place for someone. And then there are those like Creed, who make the world a better place for thousands of someone’s.

We were introduced to Creed by his rescuer and adopter, Candice Cover Model Creed with his Gary, when she mom, Candice Gary. entered him earlier this year in our 2020 Cover Model Contest. Creed was battling terminal cancer at the time, so a cover appearance was on his ‘Bucket List’, his mom said. Hundreds of votes from devoted supporters poured in but, sadly, Creed died before the contest came to a close.

We were very moved by Creed’s pure and indomitable spirit, a spirit which inspired his mother to create The Unforgotten Souls. This non-profit organization has been instrumental in saving the lives of over 3,000 dogs - dogs who, like Creed, were once sitting forgotten and alone in a county shelter. On pages 36 & 37, Candice writes about her life-changing bond with Creed, her work with The

Unforgotten Souls, and shares Copyright 2019, Lisa McLain photos of others who reached their happily-ever-afters.

Here’s to a life well-lived, Creed. Your bucket list item is checked.

It’s summer time! Sadly, we all know what that means…Kitten Season.

Kittens make up a large part of the roughly 3.2 million cats who enter shelters across the country. Kitten Season runs from about March through October and can be even longer if we experience a warmer winter. The peak of the season is typically the summer months and kittens begin pouring in to shelters. Some cats can have up to 2 litters during kitten season, an average litter can be 4 to 6 kittens. Kittens can be easier to find homes for - who doesn’t love a tiny ball of fur? Adult cats however, especially the mothers, are then over- looked and sit in shelters for longer periods of time hoping to be adopted (when they were once that tiny ball of fur, too).

Ways You Can Help:

Spay or neuter your cats and educate others to do the same. Many people are not aware that a 2-month old kitten that is 2 pounds can be safely altered.

Donate funds, supplies, or time at your local cat rescue.

Volunteer to foster for a local cat rescue. It can be hard to find people willing to bottle feed a few babies, take an entire weaned litter or one with their mom, or even the hard-to-place adult cats who are being looked over. Fosters can be of greater need than adopters during this time.

Help TNR (trap, neuter, release). This is an effective way to reduce feral/stray cat populations over time so they do not keep reproducing and creating more cats to live those dismal lives. Also, look into a barn cat program.

ADOPT a cat! Especially an adult one. If you would rather adopt a kitten, remember 2 is better than 1. They will keep each other entertained and be able to have a buddy to play with when you are not home to entertain them!

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT KITTENS CAN CRAWL UP IN CAR ENGINES AND GRILLS TO HIDE AND HITCH A RIDE! PLEASE CHECK YOUR CARS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL AS THESE KITTENS CAN FALL OUT WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, GET INJURED, AND POSSIBLY DIE.

July 2020 www.facebook.com/PawPrintsMagazine 19 My name is Sealy! And yes, it's because I look like a baby seal. I'm about 1-year-old and I love toys, especially the squeaky ones. I am great at sharing my toys with other dogs and people, too. I love to play outside and I'm a really fast runner. My foster mom thinks I can win any race! I really like to play with other dogs but I'm also comfortable being in my crate. I am nervous with new people and it takes me a little time to find out if you are worthy of my trust. I am content to stay at home and snuggle, so I am working on outings and experiencing walks and car rides. My foster mom thinks I have the softest hair and I love when she scratches my back. I would do best in a home with or without dogs. I don't know what a cat is, so I can't comment on that. I haven't been around children yet so it would be best if there are only older children in the home, or no children. I would love to be your snuggle buddy and your “hang out at home” dog. Hi, I’m Nirvana and I’m hoping we could be furever friends. I am a 4-year-old Plott Hound and Lab mix. I had an awesome family for a few years. They had a little human who let me sleep in his bed. I got to go on play dates and to doggy day care and it was so much fun! Then my leg started hurting. It wasn’t bad at first, but then it kept getting worse and worse. I was trying to be tough, but it was so hard. The little human jumped on my hurt leg and the pain was so bad that I snapped at him. My Mama and Daddy were so angry at me. I tried to say that I was sorry and that I did NOT actually bite the little human, but they dropped me off at a shelter. Then I saw Rosey! She came and got me and I was so happy. She took me to a nice doctor and they said I had a torn ACL/CCL. They got me all fixed up and pretty soon I will be able to run again like I used to. I love going on walks and will be the bestest girl on leash. I am heartworm negative, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. I would really like to find a furever home where I may be the only pup. I love to just hang out on the couch and if you give me antlers or toys, I will play quietly. I would love to have another little human, maybe a little older so they know not to jump on my legs. I don’t want to go through that again (it hurt physically and emotionally). I hope you will give me a chance.
