They later went on to combine with Thomas Ethell, Daniel DelRio and Nicholas Purnell (coxswain) from Canberra Boys Grammar School to also win GOLD in the Men's U19 Coxed Four and SILVER in the Schoolboy Coxed Four. Both Mat and Angus will be competing again at the National Junior Team Selection Regatta in April and are expected to be in contention for spots to the Junior World Championships. David Wright and Riley Owen qualified for the A Final of the U23 Men's Single Scull. Both were capable of medal winning performances but David was unfortunately withdrawn due to illness on the morning of the race. Riley went on to win the BRONZE medal in the final which was a great performance for him. By qualifying for the final, both scullers are expected to be invited to the trials for the U23 National Team that will be held in Penrith in April. Emma Cook, Christabelle Northam and Sorelle Bowman combined with Alison Smith (Nepean) to come through for BRONZE in the U23 Women's Quad Scull. Senior A athlete Megan Bagworth was in the crew for Western Australia which won BRONZE in the Women's Eight for the Queen Elizabeth Cup during the Kings Cup Regatta on the Sunday. Gordon Marcks, ACTAS Head Rowing Coach Message from the President We had superb weather and great racing at the ACT Championship Regatta on the weekend (13 and 14 March). It was vital to see both the Men’s and Women’s Eights Championships being contested, as last year there were not enough entries to have the women’s race. In the Men’s race for the Urriara Cup, the win by CGS was a dominant performance against adult crews, and reflects the high quality of these rowers who had such a successful National Regatta. I was particularly pleased that the Champion Womens Eight had 5 crews racing. It was admirable to see Sarah Cook (SUBC) stroking the predominantly Canberra Rowing Club crew to an excellent win. The appearance of the best of the ACT in these races helps raise the sport’s profile. If the best athletes are racing we can make a splash in the local media about the racing. We will make more of these Champion Eights races next season now that we are certain they are viable I think the two‐day regatta program was a success. We had great weather on both days. There were still some equipment clashes, but generally the program worked well. I believe that we now have a Championship regatta program that provides opportunities for all of the needs of our various categories of rowers. Resolving the order of events for this Regatta was intricate because we are catering for a diverse group of masters, students and adult club crews in the one regatta. 2 The regatta is unique locally in that heats and finals are required, and this provides challenges for athletes, with double the number of appearances, with both heats and finals. This program worked quite well in terms of avoiding timetable clashes, and with some fine‐tuning will be the template for the future. Safety Issues: On the first day of the regatta we had a quad scull boat overturn on the finish line. I would particularly like to acknowledge the prompt actions of umpire Bruce Selleck in aiding this novice crew. It is most important that all scullers and crews secure the heels of rowing shoes, and that quick release velcro straps that bind the shoes are serviceable. All clubs should have safety officers, whose role should be to check that all club and private boat shoes meet these requirements. Traditional rowing clogs are a good safe option for club boats. Apart from any other issue, escaping from clogs is trivial if the boat swamps. A separate safety issue was also apparent during the Championship Regatta that will lead to changes next season. As has happened at several regattas we saw racing crews crossing the finish line were at risk clashing with crews proceeding to the start past the finish, near the judges box. I am confident that next season for all regattas on race day we will adopt regatta traffic rules similar to those proposed by Geoff Northam (our Chief Boat Race Official), in the diagram. These altered traffic rules will be in force on regatta day when we run our sprint regatta with the finish line near the Treehouse beach in Weston Park. The opportunity was also taken to use Black Mountain as a venue for awarding medals for the first day of competition of the ACT Championships. Some of our BROs – Roger, Geoff, Edwin, Katherine, Claudia and Martin The President of the Black Mountain Rowing Club, said that the BROs underpinned rowing in the ACT and he was amazed at their dedication. He was grateful that many of the BROs could attend, however, a number were missing, including BMRC’s Rodney Palmer. 5 David Bagnall presenting medals David Bagnall took the opportunity to demonstrate the tying down of shoes following difficulties in shoes being untied when a crewed boat capsized near the finish line during ACT Championship racing. Thanks to the quick action of umpire Bruce Selleck the crew were safely returned to shore Coach Education – Assess your needs With the off season fast approaching now is the time to assess the skills base of your coaches. During the season proper there is no time to spend in the classroom or be distracted by assignments etc. So club presidents need to audit the skills base of those involved in coaching duties and provide us with an indication of likely demand for new courses which we will be conducting in the coming months. If you have always meant to do something like this then now is the time. Simply click on [email protected] and email your interest. Hint: Do it now. Don’t wait till the fish tank is clean and the sock drawer tidy, by then we will be back on the water full time and the opportunity will have passed. If there is no demand then obviously we will not be running courses. In the past, aspiring coaches have travelled interstate to completed NCAS courses. Accredited instructors live right here and are ready willing and able to deliver the same product, all we need is you. Did you complete a course last winter? If you did, then have you forgotten that there is also a requirement to have your new found skills assessed on the water before your accreditation is complete? Assessment is straightforward but time is running out. Email to [email protected] and book a visit from your friendly neighbourhood assessor and the job is done. So you think you’re a good lake user?     One of the unique aspects of rowing is that novices strive to perfect the same motions as Olympic contenders. Few other sports can make this claim. In figure skating, for instance, the novice practices only simple moves. After years of training, the skater then proceeds to the jumps and spins that make up an elite skater’s program. But the novice rower, from day one, strives to duplicate a motion that he’ll still be doing on the day of the Olympic finals. - Brad Alan Lewis The Rowing Shell Racing boats (often called “shells”) are long, narrow, and broadly semi-circular in cross- section in order to reduce drag to a minimum. They usually have a fin towards the rear, to help prevent roll and yaw and to increase the effectiveness of the rudder. Originally made from wood, shells are now almost always made from a composite material (usually carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) for strength and weight advantages. FISA rules specify minimum weights for each class of boat so that no individual will gain a great advantage from the use of expensive materials or technology. There are several different types of boats. They are classified using the number of rowers (1, 2, 4, or 8) in the boat and the position of the coxswain (coxless, box-coxed, or stern-coxed). With the smaller boats, specialist versions of the shells for sculling can be made lighter. The riggers in sculling apply the forces symmetrically to each side of the boat, whereas in sweep oared racing these forces are staggered alternately along the boat.
