It was great to continue our commitment to supporting our rowers attending this seasons State Championship and National Championships. Our club hosted 2 major regattas this season being Saltwater Challenge and Henley on Maribyrnong Regattas. Both regattas were great successes with the Saltwater Challenge achieving record entries. This year saw a number of ERC members be recognised for their sporting achievements throughout this season by Rowing Victoria. I would like to congratulate all our rowers, coaches, parents and supporters who helped ERC to win the 2019 RV Club Premiership. I would also like to congratulate Jessica Mirabelli for being awarded the 2019 Female Grade Rower of the Year and Isaac Sirotic for being awarded the 2019 Male Grade Rower of the Year. There were a number of ERC members who were also nominated. The success at our state awards ceremony is a testament to the Captains Team, coaches and rowers commitment and effort to strive to be the best you can be. This year our members continued the traditional Thursday night dinners. It is great to see this tradition still continuing with the help of Simone Richardson and her rolling team of volunteers. It is great to see our dedicated members supporting this great monthly social event. We continued our fundraising efforts at the Bunnings BBQ’s. To date we have raised over $8000 for the club. I would like to thank Melissa Sentry and Simon Richardson for securing the dates and organising the events. I would also like to thank the members, parents and friends who have all lended a helping hand manning the Bunnings tent throughout the year. Without these fundraising events, our club would not be able to afford new boats or equipment. I would like to thank Mark Dwyer and his SWC subcommittee for putting on yet another successful SWC regatta last September. Ellen McSweeney took on the primary role of managing HOM regatta. She did an excellent job flying solo. It would be great to see other members of our ERC family put their hand up next year to be apart of the HOM subcommittee. I would like to welcome Telstra as the clubs Regatta sponsor for the 2019 SWC and 2020 HOM. We look forward to working and growing our relationship with Telstra. The committee has worked hard this season updated and developing new policies and guidelines for our members. This year saw an upgrade of our Members Code of Conduct, ERC By-Laws and ERC Junior Rowing Strategy Plan. This important documents will assist in the growth and management of our club and our rowing programs. The committee approved an increase into our 2019-2020 membership fees. This small increase was a necessary step to ensuring the club can provide the facilities, equipment and services to our members. We also saw the introduction of the junior membership including social membership for a parent/guardian of that junior rower, ensuring our club communicates to all our ERC family. It is important to note that our membership fees ERC Annual Report 2018-19 9 continue to be the best value rowing membership in our sport. To ensure ERC continue to keep our fees as low as possible, we need our members to step up and volunteer, not just for the major events, but for our day-to-day activities. I hope that next season we see more members contribute to the daily operations. 2018 saw the return of School rowing through the ERC boat sheds. It is great to welcome St Columba’s College who commenced a new schools rowing program. I would like to thank the efforts of the Captain’s Team (Mark Dwyer, Zoe Ryan and Luke Mascaro) and Ellen McSweeney for developing and successfully marketing a sustainable schools rowing program to St Columba’s College. The introduction of the schools rowing program open many door for our growth and development as a club. This year saw ERC reach out and commence dialogue with government, council and schools to identify how ERC and rowing can provide a means for an active life to our community, particularly to the disadvantaged or disabled members of our community. Establishing sustainable programs is something that takes time. We will continue to develop the relationships with this groups and look to establish programs and pathways where ERC and rowing can provide a greater service to our community. This year, ERC was to have the female change rooms upgraded. The planning and detail design of these works with council have taken longer than initially anticipated. We will ensure that the final design meets all our needs whilst complying with grant. Council an committee are finalising these details and it is expected that these works will occur at the most suitable time for the rowing club next season. Our Lease agreement expired in 2018. Prior to the expiration of the lease, ERC had made contact with council and submitted a proposal for a new lease. Council is currently working through our lease proposal and it is expected that a new lease agreement will be finalised this year. Until a new lease agreement is agreed, MVCC has committed to honouring our existing lease. This agreement ensures our clubs security during our renegotiations. As members, it is important to know that MVCC considers ERC as a key sporting and community group within the city of Moonee Valley and are keen to continue the great relationship that existing between us. The lease renewal process is not a quick process and MVCC are fully aware of this and have acknowledged our early involvement and pro-activeness in closing this matter out. It is anticipated that the finalisation

  • The Rowing Shell Racing Boats (Often Called “Shells”) Are Long, Narrow, and Broadly Semi-Circular in Cross- Section in Order to Reduce Drag to a Minimum
One of the unique aspects of rowing is that novices strive to perfect the same motions as Olympic contenders. Few other sports can make this claim. In figure skating, for instance, the novice practices only simple moves. After years of training, the skater then proceeds to the jumps and spins that make up an elite skater’s program. But the novice rower, from day one, strives to duplicate a motion that he’ll still be doing on the day of the Olympic finals. - Brad Alan Lewis The Rowing Shell Racing boats (often called “shells”) are long, narrow, and broadly semi-circular in cross- section in order to reduce drag to a minimum. They usually have a fin towards the rear, to help prevent roll and yaw and to increase the effectiveness of the rudder. Originally made from wood, shells are now almost always made from a composite material (usually carbon-fibre reinforced plastic) for strength and weight advantages. FISA rules specify minimum weights for each class of boat so that no individual will gain a great advantage from the use of expensive materials or technology. There are several different types of boats. They are classified using the number of rowers (1, 2, 4, or 8) in the boat and the position of the coxswain (coxless, box-coxed, or stern-coxed). With the smaller boats, specialist versions of the shells for sculling can be made lighter. The riggers in sculling apply the forces symmetrically to each side of the boat, whereas in sweep oared racing these forces are staggered alternately along the boat.
