Their achievement is one of the highest honors Alabama School of Fine Arts Birmingham, AL that AVA affords choral music students in our state. Please find a listing of students who have qualified on the enclosed lists. For those Rebekah Stevens students not listed, we offer our thanks for their interest and Executive Secretary participation. Encourage them to audition again. Please read the reminders below: • The All-State Festival will be held March 8-10, 2018 at Samford University. All students who are selected for All-State are expected to attend all rehearsals and the concert in its entirety. Please mark these dates on your calendars. Notify executive secretary Rebekah Stevens ([email protected]) if students who were selected will not be attending. • Registration for the All-State Festival is due on or before January 25, 2018. Also, all payments must be postmarked by the deadline. • Please have the following information available when you prepare to submit your registration: • A copy of the enclosed list (for your reference) • Your purchase order number (if needed) • Upon submitting your registration, you will immediately receive a confirmation and invoice by email. Use that invoice to request your check and mail payment to AVA Executive Secretary Rebekah Stevens at P.O. Box 1259, Northport, AL 35476. If you do not receive the confirmation/invoice after your submit your registration, please let Rebekah know immediately. • If a middle school boy needs to learn a new part because of a voice change, please communicate this to Rebekah Stevens before February 2, 2018. He is the author of several books, including the confer- ence’s focus, Habitudes: Images That Form Leadership Habits and Attitudes. The conference provided the students with the opportunity to meet other leaders from high schools all over the southeast. They gained valuable information to utilize in their daily lives, as well as in their present and future leadership roles. He is a system mail carrier and distribu- tion worker. Mr. Munnerlyn delivers the mail to the schools in the southwest area. His work begins when most em- ployees are just rising out of bed. He organizes the mail on his route by sort- ing and bagging for the day’s delivery.

    Alabama A&M University Choir The Alabama A&M University Choir, directed by Dr. Horace Carney, provides students with the opportunity to experience participation in a cooperative activity. Emphasis is placed on fundamental vocal training, posture, breathing, sight-reading, expressive interpretation and tone development. The choir performs for campus convocations, off-campus concerts, religious services, radio and television appearances as well as a Christmas Musicale and spring concert. There is a prerequisite for participation: students must have had some experience in a high school choir or ensemble. Dr. Horace R. Carney, Jr. was born in Nashville, Tennessee but grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama. He graduated with honors from Tuskegee Institute High School fourth in his class. His post-secondary education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Music at Fisk University (magna cum laude), Master of Arts in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, and the Doctor of Philosophy in Music Theory from the University of Iowa. He has attended choral workshops at Potsdam Choral Institute, Sarasota, New York, University of South Florida, and Georgia State University. Dr. Carney’s career in music began in elementary school and continued through high school as a member of the choir, pianist, and leader of a dance band. While in high school, he studied at Tuskegee Institute with Lexine Weeks, Charlotte Giles, and Hildred Roach. His studies continued at Fisk University as a music major, a member of the university choir and the renowned Fisk Jubilee Singers for four years. His professional career includes Talladega College where he served for fourteen years as Choral Director and Acting Chairman of the Music Department, Lincoln University, Lincoln, PA; Coordinator of Choral Activities and Chairman of the Humanities Division for three years; and Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as Minister of Music and Coordinator of Cultural Affairs.

    “Choosing Education as a Career” Seminar: Mobile, Alabama In an effort to recruit more racially/ethnically diverse candidates, the COE held a national diverse student recruitment seminar in Mobile, Alabama, on June 7 – 8, 2018, titled “Choosing Education as a Career.” Invitations were extended to middle and high school principals, counselors, and parents in schools across Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Kentucky. Thirty-seven individuals from six states attended the seminar and learned from MSU COE personnel about admissions, multicultural leadership scholarships, and year-long internship opportunities. The goal was to form partnerships with schools to recruit middle and high school students from underrepresented groups to choose teaching as a career. Some of these schools are now exploring options for working with the MSU EPP. Follow-up will be conducted in the late fall 2018 / early spring 2019 to determine how many students from the schools represented may be choosing education as a career as a result of this effort.
