On future albums a newer, sleeker Katatonia sound came to the fore, starting with a streamlined and structured collection of melodic dark rock songs that became the third album “Discouraged Ones”. May 2016 saw the release of Katatonia's eleventh studio album, titled “The Fall of Hearts”. The band has since then been touring South America, Europe, Australia and North America with great success. This will be Katatonia's first visit at Inferno Metal Festival, so be sure to catch them at our icon festival. https://www.facebook.com/katatonia/ ULSECT Ulsect is the newest signing on the label Season of Mist and has just released their debut album. The band hails from the Dutch city Tilburg – that has spawned such acts as blackened extremists Dodecahedron and rhythmic progressives Textures. Out of this circle, Ulsect have emerged. The death metal innovators feature guitarist Joris Bonis and drummer Jasper Barendregt from Dodecahedron as well as former Textures bass- player Dennis Aarts. It therefore hardly comes as a surprise that elements of their origins have permeated into Ulsect's eponymous debut album. You will find high technical precision and prowess woven into dense dissonance and lucent atmosphere. The primeval forces unleashed by pioneers such as Gorguts and Deathspell Omega are violently harnessed to serve a sinister musical purpose. I think, by doing the many „Dethroned & Uncrowned“ and „Sanctitude“ acoustic gigs and album we opened up a new door for our audience to choose, to get familiar with, to accept a new sound of Katatonia. We never tried to claim or anything that this was the indication of our new style. It was just a little side experiment to show that we have more sides than just one in Katatonia. I am displeased that this CD reminds me of this wretched truth. Has it been 16 years since this first rocked my world? I was supposed to see these guys with Atheist and Cannibal Corpse once, but the club didn't let in anyone under eighteen at the time so I could not go. Also it was in a bad neighborhood, Velociraptors and Tyrannosaurus Rex on every block. Most of them were on drugs to boot. Luckily the day of the drug crazed dinosaur has passed and we are threatened only by a lot of other things. Enough of my senile recollections, let the metal geezer get this review out before Alzheimer's robs me of the ability to know what in the hell I'm talking about. I loved this album back in the day, although I don't listen to a ton anymore. It is however an interesting contrast to the last two albums Gorguts did. Before every French-Canadian became a god with a musical instrument or a hockey stick. It used to be they only did hockey. This might be the album where that really started to change, although Voivod had been working the province for quite some time. This was a decent record, even at the time. This is more mid-paced to slow as opposed to the faster stuff I prefer.

Kicking out the jams with palpable vicissitude and blazing flair is Kentucky's Savage Master who, with their latest heavy-hitting harangue, With Whips And Chains (released in April of last year under the highly reputable High Roller Records), provides the home of the Slugger - Louisville - and its bashing rivet heads an additional notch on the belt. That said, if you're fond of caustic and jagged, yet "rollicking", metal bands such as Motorhead, Demon Bitch and Night Viper you owe to it yourself to give this release a predatory lunge. Although ignominious and oily as sin, front woman Stacey Peak a.k.a. Savage's vocals are actually quite refreshing, albeit grimly; that is, tempered with evil ferment and compounded by cranked up, hopping instrumentation which indiscriminately won me over. Dig the bone jarring rattle punctuating "Path of the Necromancer" or captivating chorus to "Dark Light of the Moon". Don't be thrown off by the somewhat pedestrian song titles as the album's congenial and overall bad-ass vibe rabidly do 'em justice. In other words, expect this brand of no frills, in-for-the-kill mid- tempo metal to deliver while guaranteeing more than its fair share of gleeful, even giddy, returns. Expunged as they are, the dark, tempestuous lyrics initially gripped me with the fury of a hellion! Let's just say they wickedly "behoove" Stacy's kick-ass, currish caws. As for the guitar riffs, they're very compact and gruff, sort of like Bullet's but instead of evoking beers, hot rods and babes, SM's are simply dripping with venomous black wizardry and bile, at times madly grooving back and forth like a haunted rocking chair.
