  • REMINISCENSES of RUSSIA Irvin R
REMINISCENSES OF RUSSIA Irvin R. (Irv) Lindemuth June 2017 “It is easy to blow up our planet. All it takes is a button to be pressed …,” Russian school children’s song. “After so many years of very bad relations between our countries, this work is extraordinary...I wish you further success," Yuli B. Khariton, September 1993. “All of you can be sure your children and grandchildren will be proud and this is the beginning...,” Yuri Trutnev, September 1993. The words above by Yu. B. Khariton, founder of the Soviet nuclear weapons program and Chief Scientist of the All-Russian Scientific Research Center of Experimental Physics (VNIIEF) in Sarov, were spoken to a Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) team after the completion of the first joint fundamental scientific experiment conducted at VNIIEF with LANL. Trutnev, Deputy Chief Scientist of VNIIEF and a colleague of Nobel Peace Laureate Andre Sakharov, added his comments at a banquet celebrating the same experiment. Khariton was absolutely right: the budding LANL/VNIIEF collaboration was extraordinary and it was unprecedented in the nuclear age. Trutnev was absolutely right, too: it was just the beginning, and his words imply the hopes of all of those who have participated in the collaboration: that our children and grandchildren will live in a world free of the international tensions and fear of nuclear war that put a cloud over his and my generation. For the author and most, if not all, of the LANL members of the collaboration, the opportunity to participate in the collaboration was one of the highlights of their careers.

  • The Origins of Non-Violence
The Origins of Non-violence Tolstoy and Gandhi in Their Historical Settings Martin Green The Origins of Non-violence This book describes the world-historical forces, acting on the periphery of the modern world—in Russia in the nineteenth century—which developed the idea of nonviolence in Tolstoy and then in Gandhi. It was from Tolstoy that Gandhi first learned of this idea, but those world-historical forces acted upon and through both men. The shape of the book is a convergence, the coming together of two widely separate lives, under the stress of history. The lives of Tolstoy and Gandhi begin at widely separate points— of time, of place, of social origin, of talent and of conviction; in the course of their lives, they become, respectively, military officer and novelist, and lawyer and political organizer. They win fame in those roles; but in the last two decades of their lives, they occupy the same special space—ascetic/saint/prophet. Tolstoy and Gandhi were at first agents of modern reform, in Russia and India. But then they became rebels against it and led a profound resistance—a resistance spiritually rooted in the traditionalism of myriad peasant villages. The book’s scope and sweep are enormous. Green has made history into an absorbing myth—a compelling and moving story of importance to all scholars and readers concerned with the history of ideas. www.mkgandhi.org Page 1 The Origins of Non-violence Preface This book tells how the modern version of nonviolence—and Satyagraha, and war-resistance, and one kind of anti-imperialism, even— were in effect invented by Tolstoy and Gandhi.

  • Verbal Hagiography of Seraphim of Sarov
Yulia M. Shevarenkova N. I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University Nizhny Novgorod [email protected] VERBAL HAGIOGRAPHY OF SERAPHIM OF SAROV Among saints who have become famous in Nizhny Novgorod prov‐ ince of Russia in all history of its existence since the 13th century the figure of Seraphim of Sarov (1759–1833) is sure to rank exceptionally. He was a hieromonk, a starets of the Sarov monastery; famous before the Revolution 1917, it stood at the very border of Nizhny Novgorod province and Mordovia. However the life story of the saint was connected not only with the Sarov monastery but also with the Serafimo‐Diveevsky convent which got its name by the name of the starets. Popularity of the saint is explained not only with the fact that in Diveevo region, Nizhny Novgorod province, the convent exists which grew to its modern status from a small mill community organized by Seraphim of Sarov, not only with pride of the “local” saint famous in whole Russia and even in the whole world, but also with special anxious attitude of simple people and of local peasantry to “father Seraphimushka,” helping in all troubles old man “with a stick…, crooked old man with a bag and a stick,”1 good‐natured and merciful saint as if he went off a typical home icon. The starets was canonized in 1903 in spite of the fact that canoni‐ zation commission made a lot of protractions and thanking to the supreme direction of Russian Emperor Nicholas II. The latter and his family visited Sarov and Diveevo in July 1903; they took part in Sera‐ phim glorification events.

  • The Region and the World: the Case of Nizhnii Novgorod
Eidgenössische “Regionalization of Russian Foreign and Security Policy” Technische Hochschule Zürich Project organized by The Russian Study Group at the Center for Security Studies and Conflict Research Andreas Wenger, Jeronim Perovic,´ Andrei Makarychev, Oleg Alexandrov WORKING PAPER NO.6 MAY 2001 The Region and the World: The Case of Nizhnii Novgorod DESIGN : SUSANA PERROTTET RIOS This paper gives a thorough account of the factors that foster or inhibit Nizhnii By Andrei S. Makarychev Novgorod’s efforts to become a player in the national and international arenas. The author of this study sees opportunities and hurdles for the region’s integration into international economic (but also political and social) structures. This process, which started in the early 1990s, was much more lengthy and time consuming than was ini- tially expected. There have been objective reasons for this development (the general crisis of the Russian economy, lack of a globally oriented sector of the regional mar- ket) as well as subjective ones (foreign policy misperceptions of local elites, admin- istrative inertia and lack of well-trained managers). The author argues that the region’s economic and financial projects might in the future realistically be integrated into a wider international geopolitical and geoeconomic framework. Thanks to a rel- atively liberal leadership, experiences in the field of international cooperation and the strong presence of foreign economic actors in the region, business professionals and policy-makers from Nizhnii Novgorod are gradually adapting to the basic norms and rules of the international business and political community and understand the necessity to improve the quality standards of domestic production.

Bondur Institute for Scientific Research of Aerospace Monitoring AEROCOSMOS, Gorokhovskii per. 4, Moscow, 105064 Russia email: [email protected] Received January 27, 2011 Abstract—We describe the specific features of the summer 2010 emergency conditions in the European part of the Russian Federation, when an anomalous heat wave (the monthly mean temperatures in the summer months were 5–9°C higher than those for 2002–2009) and prolonged blocking anticyclones led to large wild fires. We analyze their causes and consequences. The features of the satellite system for operational fire mon itoring (constructed at the Aerospace Scientific Center) and examples of its application in summer 2010 are presented. On the basis of the results of processing of satellite images of low (250–1000 m), medium (~30– 50 m), and high (~6 m) resolutions, we found that the total area covered by fire from March to November of 2010 amounted to approximately 10.9 million hectares for the entire territory of the country and and 2.2 mil lion hectares for its European part. Daily histograms of areas covered by fire in the summer months of 2010 were constructed. On the basis of these data and empirical models, we estimate the daily emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) from wildfires in the summer months of 2010 for the European part of Russia and Moscow oblast.
