Gedanken Zur Skulptur „Tägliche Mühe“ Gedanken zur Skulptur „Tägliche Mühe“ Zuerst ein Blick in die Geschichte der Willeschen Dampfmühle bis 1918: Georg Wille war seit der Gründung seiner Mühle bestrebt, technische Neuheiten in der Mühle umzusetzen. Er nutzte als erster in Grabow seit 1886 eine Dampfmaschine. Sein Besuch der Weltausstellung in Paris im Jahre 1900 diente vor allem der Information über technische Weiterentwicklungen auf dem Gebiet des Mühlenwesens. Bei dieser Reise war Georg Wille aber auch beeindruckt von der Vielzahl der Exponate auf künstlerischem Gebiet. In dem großen Palast des Champs Elysees war das Kostbarste, das die Gäste Frankreichs mitbrachten untergebracht. In dieser Halle waren 632 Skulpturen ausgestellt. Georg Wille war von den Leistungen der Künstler beeindruckt. Er nutzte das vielfältige Angebot, kaufte die Skulptur „Tägliche Mühe“ für 1000 Mark (Goldmark), lies sie auf dem Seeweg von Paris über Hamburg und Dömitz nach Grabow bringen und vor der Willeschen Mühle aufstellen. Der Tafel unter der Skulptur entnehmen wir folgende Informationen: Tägliche Mühe Entworfen 1892 von Joh. Nejberg Es handelt sich offenbar um eine Studienarbeit, die bereits acht Jahre vor der Weltausstellung 1900 fertig gestellt wurde. Über den Künstler Nejberg haben wir lange Zeit trotz umfangreicher Suche im Internet nichts finden können. Die entscheidenden Hinweise gab Dr. Kai-Uwe Thiessenhusen, danke! Wir haben ursprünglich nach Neiberg und nicht nach Nejberg gesucht. 1. Zum Künstler, bzw. zur Künstlerin: Auf der Rückseite der Skulptur findet man den Namen „Joh. Nejberg“. Überrascht wird man erst, wenn man weiter nach diesem Namen sucht. Das Internet liefert in einem Verzeichnis der königlichen Akademie der Künste in Kopenhagen aus dem Jahre 1891 folgendes: „Bildhauerkunst Johanne Nejberg, 549 Statue i Gips Anschrift: Nejberg, Frk. Paris“ Die Skulptur wurde also von einer dänischen Künstlerin in Paris geschaffen. Bei der Aufzählung der Preisträger eines Skulpturenwettbewerbs aus dem Jahre 1893 im Salon des Champs-Elysees in Paris finden wir: Bei diesem Wettbewerb erhielt Fräulein Johanne Nejberg eine Anerkennung. 2. Zum Lehrer dieser Künstlerin: In einem weiteren Ausstellungsverzeichnis aus dem Jahre 1894 für das Palais des Champs-Elysees lesen wir: Fräulein Jehanne Nejberg aus Copenhagen, Schülerin von Stephan Sinding, wohnhaft in Paris, Boulevard Arago 65. Bezeichnung der Skulptur – Le fardeau quotidien, also „die tägliche Mühe“. Stephan Abel Sinding (1846 – 1922) war ein dänisch-norwegischer Bildhauer, der außer in seiner Heimat in Paris, Berlin und Oslo gearbeitet hat. Er fand zu seiner Zeit große Beachtung. Werke von ihm werden gegenwärtig in der Kunsthalle in Bremen ausgestellt. Die Bezeichnung der Skulptur „Le fardeau quotidien“ finden wir auch auf der Skulptur auf dem Marktplatz in Grabow. Dort in der Übersetzung „Tägliche Mühe“. Offenbar war diese Skulptur bereits 1893 oder 1894 im Palais des Champs-Elysees in Paris ausgestellt. 3. Zur Gießerei der Skulptur „Tägliche Mühe“ Eine Information über die Gießerei findet man an der linken Seite der Skulptur. Thiébaut Frères Gießerei in Paris war eine der wichtigsten Kunstgießereien zwischen 1890 und 1910 in Frankreich. Denkmale aus dieser Gießerei befinden sich in sehr großer Anzahl in Frankreich, dort vor allem in Paris. Wikipedia dokumentiert mit sehr vielen Abbildungen diese Kunstwerke. 4. Wo war das Atelier, in dem Johanne Nejberg gearbeitet hat? Die Anschrift war oben bereits zu lesen: Paris, Boulevard Arago, 65 An diesem Ort wurden Relikte der Weltausstellung von 1878 um einen Garten herum gesammelt. Hier bildete sich nach und nach eine Art von künstlerischem Kloster, an dem sich eine Gemeinschaft vor allem nordischer Bildhauer sammelte. Ein Teil der hier geschaffenen Kunstwerke ist heute in einem Museum an genau diesem Ort in Boulevard Arago, 65 untergebracht. 5. Was ist aus der Johanne geworden? Trotz längerer Suche haben wir bisher nicht mehr gefunden. Vermutlich hat sie wie Dr. Kai-Uwe Thiessenhusen meint als verheiratete Frau „unter anderem Namen ein wahrscheinlich unkünstlerisches Leben geführt“. Fazit: Die Skulptur ist ein Andenken von Georg Wille von seiner Reise zur Weltausstellung nach Paris im Jahre 1900. Bestimmt aber nicht nur ein Geschenk für seinen Sohn. Das Aufstellen dieser Skulptur durch Georg Wille drückt meiner Meinung nach noch etwas anderes aus: Die Entwicklung der Dampfmühle zeigt, dass es der Familie Wille gelungen ist trotz der seit mehreren Jahrhunderten bestehenden Bolbrüggeschen Wassermühle eine zweite Mühle zu gründen. Dabei haben sie als erste die Kraft der Dampfmaschine und einen Windmotor der Firma Carl Reinsch aus Dresden in Grabow eingesetzt. Mit dem Aufstellen der Skulptur aus Paris wurde zum Ausdruck gebracht: Seht mal, wie gut es der Dampfmühle Wille geht! Wir haben zur Freude der Einwohner in Grabow eine Skulptur aus Paris aufgestellt. Diese Zeiten sind vorüber. Heute sind die Überreste beider Mühlen ein Schandfleck für die Stadt Grabow. Vermutlich soll mit dem Aufstellen der Skulptur neben dem Rathaus ständig daran erinnert werden, dass auch für diese beiden Objekte eine Lösung gefunden werden muss. Abschließend noch einmal eine Bemerkung zum Namen „Sackträger“: Dieser Name für die Skulptur ist falsch und sollte daher auch nicht verwendet werden. Die dargestellte Person versucht einen Sack anzuheben. Mühlenarbeiter werden es auf die dargestellte Art und Weise aber nie versucht haben. Es gab Aufzüge und Sackkarren. Die älteren Grabower Einwohner wissen: Sackträger gab es beim Kohlehandel. Die Kohlensäcke wurden jedoch nicht vom Erdboden sondern vom Kohlenwagen aus geschultert. .

    Monuments to Settlers of the North: A Means to Strengthen National Identity1 Júlíana Gottskálksdóttir Einar Jónsson Museum, Reykjavík (Iceland) Abstract – In this article two topics will be discussed: a) Icelanders’ proposal to erect a memorial to the country’s first settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, and the ensuing public debate and b) the background to the memorial to Thorfinnur Karlsefni, who is said to have settled in the New World shortly after 1000 AD, and the debate that took place in North America. The principal research questions concern the role of intellectuals in the 19th and 20th centuries in raising public support for the idea of erecting the memorials to the settlers, and what arguments were adduced to promote nationalistic sentiments among the public for that purpose. Keywords – Iceland, settler, Ingólfur Arnarson, monument, Einar Jónsson, pioneer, the New World, Thorfinnur Karlsefni, Norse Introduction One November day in 1875 a group of people gathered on Austurvöllur field in the middle of the little town of Reykjavík, where a statue was to be unveiled: a gift to the Icelanders from the Copenhagen City Council to mark the millennium in 1874 of the settlement of Iceland. The statue was a self-portrait by the renowned sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), who was of half-Icelandic descent. Although presented on the occasion of the millennium, the statue did not serve to commemorate the settlement of Iceland. Some years earlier a debate had taken place about marking this national milestone by erecting a memorial to Ingólfur Arnarson, identified as Iceland’s first settler in the medieval Landnámabók (Book of Settlements).

Kongehuset er per definisjon ment å være samlende for et land og fordi det var folket som bidro med gaven ville kongegaven nettopp få betydning som kunsterisk ytring i en nasjonal kontekst som ingen annen utstilling eller verk kunne. Det har vært viktig å vise hvordan norske kunstnere bidro med norske landskapsbilder, tatt i betraktning at de alle mer eller mindre var bofaste i utlandet. At kunstnerne så Norge og norskhet fra utlendighet satte preg på deres arbeider. Gaven og samlingen viser svært forskjellige uttrykk og på mange måter representerer disse dristige valg av juryen. Fra romantiske bilder, naturidyll til samfunnsrefs, samtidig som den avviste etablerte samtidskunstnere som man kunne tro ville bli representert. Slik sett ga juryen ikke bare en høflig gave til kongeparet, men bidro med en sterk ytring; både kunsthistorisk og kunstpolitisk i samtiden. I oppgaven ligger et ønske om å gi en oversikt over de arbeidene som representerer folkegaven og tolke disse i lys av de spesielle vanskelige årene hvor bildene ble formet, og som i sine uttrykk viser noe mer enn et vakkert bilde av fedrelandet.

Craig, Art & Architecture Librarian Univ. of Kansas August 2006 1 This book began with a 1981 reference question about John Noble, a name I did not recognize despite having studied art history and worked as an art librarian for more than 10 years. Learning that John Noble was a Kansas artist, I went looking for the best available book on Kansas art only to learn the resources were few. As a new faculty member at the Univ. of Kansas, I needed to establish a research project so I decided to prepare a dictionary of Kansas artists thus fulfilling both the research requirement and educating myself about the history of the visual arts in my native state; I just didn't intend the project to take 25 years or realize that I would have more than 1750 entries in the dictionary. I began by defining the scope of the work: • "Kansas artist" was loosely defined as artists who were both born in the state as well as artists who were born elsewhere but were artistically active in Kansas. Under this latter definition, I included artists who produced significant artworks such as the murals installed in Kansas post offices. Occasionally, artists who lived or worked primarily in Kansas City, MO may be included. I did not deliberately include all Kansas City artists but neither did I exclude them if the name came from a Kansas source such as the Kansas State Gazetteer. • Another choice I made was to look for artists who were artistically active before 1945.

He Came, He Saw, He Conquered 1 by AASE BAK Every morning when President Reagan leaves the White House and casts worried glances to the left toward Capitol Hill where Congress sits and impedes life for him, he can hardly avoid seeing the equestrian statue in front of the Treasury Building. The statue is one of the great heroes of the United States, a victor from the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman. He is shown mounted and surrounded by symbols of war and peace. In Finn and Jette Nielsen's lobby in Himmerland, Den­ mark, stands a plaster torso. It is a remnant of the original model for the statue mentioned above. It is also a confirma­ tion of the truths of the old saying, "sic transit gloria mundi." The Danish sculptor who was responsible for the statue and who, following his death, was praised in the following lines by the Danish American poet, John Volk, 1s now shrouded in the mists of oblivion in his native land.

Welhaven was Norway’s first Romantic poet in the Heidelberg tra- dition, a trend which took its inspiration from folklore, folk music, and medieval myths. His probing nationalistic depiction of nature, interwoven with supernatural folkloristic elements, and his elegiac-erotic and lyrical poetry inspired Kjerulf to create the Norwegian romance, Den norske romanse, modeling it initially on the German Lied. During the years from 1840 to 1868, Kjerulf set 43 Welhaven poems to music – 24 for solo voice and piano – and with his more than 130 songs established the Norwegian art-song that Edvard Grieg would build on during the decades following Kjerulf’s death. After presenting the cultural and political background in Norway, the intertwined lives of the poet and composer and their European cultural heritage, this thesis turns to a detailed analysis of the complete Welhaven romances for one voice, and demonstrates how Kjerulf and Welhaven, initially oriented towards Denmark and Europe, the Danish language and the German Lied, developed a growing appreciation for national traits and language.
