Lake, Ocean & River Fishing: Connor Sabo Fishing Reports for April 6, 2017 at 11:01am Now that spring has officially sprung and the temperatures rising means we’ve reached the end of winter. It was a long and cold season but now the grass is growing and the bears are hungry and starting to wake up. It’s a great time to get out and enjoy the fresh spring air, We decided to go North to the Kincolith in the Nass Valley. Knowing that the Eulachon were busying spawning in the Nass River and the herring spawning right in front of the Village we knew that there would be a lot of action going on so Out come the halibut rods and crab traps! When we Arrived at 8:30 the water was like glass and the sun was just coming over the mountains, it was perfect. The crab traps were baited and set and off we went to anchor out in front of the Village with spectacular views. Right away the Black cod were already biting our jigs baited with salmon. They kept the action going by noon we had our limit of cod but no halibut yet. One other boat was anchored beside us and they had a bit better luck hooking 2 halibut and landing 1. Finally Nearing the end of the day after what we think were many good halibut bites we finally hooked one and brought it to the surface. The halibut was about 15 pounds or so, small but we were not skunked! We pulled our anchor and went to pull our crab traps, We filled our limit of crab and then some so we were able to pick and choose the bigger ones! All and all it was was an awesome day to get out on the water. Some of the gear I used today was my Jet boat built by “Fish-rite” and engine made by “Yamaha”. My choice of tackle was a Mudraker Jig, Rod and Reel was a “Rapala RSC series rod” and a “Penn 330GTi graphite reel” Also I held my Salmon Belly strips that I used for bait in my “Bait2go” bait holding system which is great for space and convenience! Connor Sabo Fishing Reports for April 15, 2017 at 9:01am - 1st report Well it was Back to Kincolith for Saturday the 8th and what a day it was.

  • Gitksan Cultural Retention in Christianized Houses And
GITKSAN CULTURAL RETENTION IN CHRISTIANIZED HOUSES AND SPACE By GARVEY SOOSAY Integrated Studies Project submitted to Dr. Leslie Main Johnson in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts – Integrated Studies Athabasca, Alberta June, 2010 1 Abstract The Gitksan culture of the Northern British Columbia has survived in spite of religious and government assaults. Many First Nations have a pride towards their culture partly due to the early efforts of their elders who tried their best to resist assimilation. Yet in spite of assimilative methods and strategies of missionaries, the Gitksan took a proactive role in allowing the missionaries to assist them to cope with the expanding western institutions in British Columbia. Scholars such as Ronald Wright (1992)1, Thomas Berger (1992)2 and Elizabeth Furniss (1995)3 have centered their studies on the unequal relations that existed between various First Nations groups and Europeans. These interpretations serve to highlight the tragedies and the victimization of the Native/European experience, but specific studies of syncretism demonstrate that power was also shared within the colonizing process. In the Gitksan territory, the syncretism of culture and the acceptance of church ideals is demonstrated in the art and architecture within the contemporary reserve villages. Introduction The Gitksan were heavily influenced by the teachings of Methodist missionaries and that was made apparent in the transference of European building styles. The Gitksan sacrificed the traditional life in cedar longhouses, but evidence of traditional art and architectural forms still exist in all of the contemporary reserve villages. The Gitksan chose to embrace both cultures.
