MEJO482 Project #2 - Blue Note-style Album Cover and Promotional Design Project Overview: You’ve been hired by a popular musician’s marketing team to design their latest album cover. The artist has decided that the cover art should take inspiration from the Blue Note Records album covers from the ‘50s and ‘60s. You should look at and study as many of those as they can for inspiration and guidance on how to develop the look of the album cover, while also trying to maintain a sense of the artist’s personal style. Target Audience: During the making of the album, the artist recorded several tracks with up-and-coming jazz artists whose audiences may not overlap with their own. The album cover must feel connected to the artist’s own visual style, but it also must feel like a slight departure from what they may normally do. They want people to know they are an evolving artist who is willing to go wherever their music takes them. The Deliverables: The designer will need to turn in three (3) deliverables by the due date: 1. The finished album cover in PDF format, 2000 pixels x 2000 pixels, at least 200 dpi, RGB color space. You can use either Photoshop or Illustrator to create the final product as long as what you turn in conforms to the specifications above. The cover should feature the following pieces of information: The artist/group name, the album title, the Blue Note Records logo, the names of 4-5 people who contributed to the album. All of these pieces of information should be integrated artfully into the design of the cover. 2. An 11”x17” promotional poster for the album, either portrait or landscape orientation, in PDF format. Think of a creative way to adapt your album cover design to fit this format. Don’t just “stretch” the visuals. 3. Spotify Canvas artwork for the album in PDF format. It should be 405 pixels wide by 720 pixels tall, portrait orientation. It DOES NOT have to be animated, but you need to think up some ideas for how it COULD animate in a loop. Think of a creative way to adapt your album cover design to fit this format. Look to Spotify’s website for examples. The PDF should have an image of just the artwork, as well as an image of the artwork with notes explaining the animation idea. ***All deliverables for this project should be emailed to the instructor in a compressed .zip file by 5 p.m., Monday, February 1, 2021. Review: Roadburn Thursday 19th April 2017 By Sander van den Driesche It’s that time of the year again, the After Yellow Eyes it’s straight to the much anticipated annual pilgrimage to Main Stage to see Dark Buddha Rising Tilburg to join with many hundreds of perform with Oranssi Pazuzu as the travellers for Walter’s party at Waste of Space Orchestra, which is Roadburn. As I get off the train the another highly anticipated show, and in heat kicks me right in the face, what a this case one that won’t be played massive difference to the dull and rainy anywhere else (as far as I know). What morning I left behind in Scotland. This happened on that big stage was is glorious weather for a Roadburn phenomenal, we witnessed a near hour Festival! Bring it on! of glorious drone-infused psychedelic proggy doom. In fact, it felt a bit too early for me personally in the timing of the festival to experience such an extraordinarily mind-blowing set, but it was a remarkable collaboration and performance. I can’t wait for the Live at Roadburn release to come out (someone make it happen please!). Yellow Eyes by Niels Vinck After getting my bearings with the new venues, I enter Het Patronaat for the first of my highly anticipated performances of the festival, Yellow Eyes. But after three blistering minutes of ferocious black metal the PA system seems to disagree and we have our first “Zeal & Ardor moment” of 2018. It’s Waste of Space Orchestra by Niels Vinck not even remotely funny to see the On the same Main Stage, Earthless Roadburn crew frantically trying to played the first of their sets as figure out what went wrong, but luckily Roadburn’s artist in residence.

I contend that the contemporary, multi-racial, literary and musical characters in my project who participate in so-called “authentic” blues expression create, sometimes consciously and sometimes unwittingly, a fiction on top of a fiction. This project questions the belief held by many blues scholars, critics, and fans that blues music is a racially essentialized form instead of a narrative tradition made possible through carefully constructed autobiographical and biographical fictions. ii My project makes two important interventions into traditional discussions of blues production and the representations of blues figures in 20th- and 21st-century American literature. First, it destabilizes racial, socio-cultural, temporal, and gendered blues tropes by shifting blues expression from an innate skill to a storytelling art form through which its makers invent themselves. Second, this study allows for a different, interdisciplinary approach to autobiographical and biographical expression.

BLACK METAL MACHINE THEORIZING INDUSTRIAL BLACK METAL Daniel Lukes Far from being a marginal Black Metal subgenre, Industrial Black Metal is central in bringing out Black Metal’s often disavowed appropriation of machinic noise and its critique of machine society. Through its engagement with “becoming machine” logic and robot apocalYpse, cybernetic, and cosmic science fictions, Industrial Black Metal recon- figures Black Metal’s drive toward the inorganic inhuman as vehement critique of capitalist modernitY and the industrial death state. LIVING WITH VADER Ryder Windham and Peter Vilmur’s official Darth Vader guidebook The Complete Vader (2009) chuckles at some earlY merchandise misfires and mocks a 1978 collectable model kit Darth Vader Van bY manufacturer MPC—which “could be pitted against a similar white ‘hero’ van in the ‘drag race of the galaxY’”—describing it as “curiositY that managed to slip through Lucasfilm approvals.”1 Yet maYbe the makers of that van were onto something. In 2011, Darth Vader is still being used to sell cars. The Volkswagen Passat 2012 commercial “The Force” features a Young child in a Vader costume, who goes about a suburban familY home trYing to use “the force” to no avail.
