Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

But after three blistering minutes of ferocious black metal the PA system seems to disagree and we have our first “Zeal & Ardor moment” of 2018. Oh, hell, let's dispense with the formalities and give it up for this California four-piece (singer Jay Buchanan, guitarist Scott Holiday, bassist Robin Everhart and drummer Mike Miley), who attack well- worn forms – there's also splashes of soul, funk and head-spinning psychedelia, for good measure – with a zeal that borders on audacity. The grooves are deep and the vocals are of the chest-beating variety, but the real star of the show is guitarist Holiday. On the album's 13 exhilarating cuts, he hits with with tectonic force, creating rich tapestries of sound that burst wide open with style, imagination and an infectious, warped charm. We caught up with Holiday the other day to chat about his spunky approach to guitar playing, his many axes and sonic toys, and to find out how he felt rubbing shoulders with a new fan, another six- string slinger who goes by the name Jimmy Page. So Jimmy Page likes your band. That's got to feel good.

So, without further ado, I give you the best band ever, Brand New. Thanks to Shadman and Nick for their help with this post as well. Brand New is from Long Island, New York, and was formed in 2000. This group had their roots in another group called Rookie Lot, which three Long Island kids named Jesse Lacey, Garrett Tierney, and Brian Lane were in, along with two other members (who eventually join Crime in Stereo and Movielife respectively). The three remaining members, along with the addition of Vin Accardi (formerly One Last Goodbye), came together to form a new group. Vuala, Brand New. After several demos, they put out their debut in 2001 on Triple Crown Records. At this time they wrote catchy pop-punk songs full of teenage bitterness (well). Their next release, Deja Entendu, showed their maturation as a band and reaching a much larger audience.

    The Zyphoid Process & Great White North The Zyphoid Process (sometimes stylized as The Zyphoïd Process) was probably the only band from Quebec that I actually truly adored. This melodic, chaotic, post-metalcore band featured members from various locations in the West Island of Montreal, but they practiced in the bassist’s house studio in Ile Perrot. Meeting from attending the same high school, College Charlemagne in Pierrefonds, Quebec, most of the members had crossed paths in previous bands. One of these, Deadly Awakening featured Simon Talbot on vocals, Pierre-Charles Payer on bass, Laurent Shaker and Eric Lapierre on guitars and Dave Powell on drums. Deadly Awakening played their only show in early August of 2007 at The Vault in Pierrefonds. Their set consisted of only covers; As I Lay Dying’s “Meaning in Tragedy”, Atreyu’s “Lip Gloss and Black”, Alexisonfire’s “Waterwings” and Killswitch Engage’s “My Last Serenade”. Shaker had also been jamming with another group of friends; Eric Lapierre and Raphael Sous-Leblanc on guitars with Shaker on bass. By the fall of 2007, a new band had formed featuring Simon and Raph on guitars and dual vocals, and PCP on bass. Simon was responsible for naming the new band. “The Zyphoid Process”, an alteration of “xiphoid process”, was a term he had come across during a first aid course. Musical influences came from Poison the Well, Norma Jean, The Chariot and other emocore and metalcore bands of the era. The first Zyphoid Process artwork ever created. October 2007, Nicolas Kudeljian Initially, the band continued jamming with Dave Powell on drums but this didn’t last very long.
