The catalogue of Iranian rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) which is based on detail study of all available published data is presented in this paper. Totally 716 species from four groups (Omaliine, Tachyporine, Oxyteline, Staphylinine) and 16 subfamilies (including, Aleocharinae, Habrocerinae, Leptotyphylinae, Omaliinae, Osoriinae, Oxyporinae, Oxytelinae, Paederinae, Proteininae, Pselaphinae, Scaphidiinae, Scydmaeninae, Staphylininae, Steninae, Tachyporinae and Trichophyinae) are currently recognized as occurring in Iran. Trichophyinae). INTRODUCTION Iran forms a large part of the Iranian plateau, and covers an area of 1,623,779 km² (Fig. 1). It is bordered in the north Rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) are the by the Caucasus Mts., Middle Asian natural regions and most diverse family in hexapoda with over than 56.768 the Caspian Sea (-27 m below sea level); in the west by valid species in 3.624 genera and 33 subfamilies. These the Anatolian and Mesopotamian regions; in the east by beetles has worldwide distribution but their diversity the eastern part of the Iranian plateau (Afghanistan and is more various in tropical and temperate than in arctic adjacent west Pakistan) and the Baluch-Sindian region; regions, and also more diverse in moist forested areas and finally in the south by the Persian Gulf and Oman than in drier areas or deserts [Newton and Thayer, 1992; Sea, which are connected by the latter to the Indian Ocean. Thayer, 2005]. Rove beetles are known from every type Seven desert plains and depressions give the landscape a of habitat that beetles occur in, and their diets include just completely different appearance: Dasht-e Kavir in Central about everything except the living tissues of higher plants. Iran, Dasht-e Lut desert, Sistan and Jazmurian depressions Most rove beetles are predators of insects and other kinds in the southeast, Khuzestan plain in the southwest, Moghan of invertebrates, living in forest leaf litter and similar steppe in the northwest and the Turkman-Sahra steppe in the kinds of decaying plant matter. They are also commonly northeast. Six main watershed areas are recognized within found under stones, and around freshwater margins. the country, but the central and southern watersheds in Several types are known to live on ocean shores that are particular often are divided up into 21 by different authors. submerged at high tide, several species have adapted to More than 20 larger lakes form part of the landscape of live as inquilines in ant and termite colonies, and some Iran, with the largest one, the saline Urumia Lake, covering live in mutualistic relationships with mammals whereby 4,868 km² in the northwest [Zehzad et al., 2002, Hangay et they eat fleas and other parasites, benefiting the host. al., 2005] Most species are probably predators of other arthropods The fauna of Iranian Staphylinidae was poorly studied as far as known, but large numbers including several entire so far and the newest checklist on this important and big subfamilies are saprophagous on decaying plant matter family was prepared by Anlas and Newton [2010]. But the (e.g., Osoriinae, Oxytelinae, Piestinae), fungivorous (e.g., mentioned list does not include all the reported data and Oxyporinae, Scaphidiinae), or have other specialized it lost some species; because there are some journals in feeding habits such as pollenfeeding, but very few feed Iran which are not available for all the researchers of the on green plants. A few species are of economic or medical world. The objective of this paper is summarizing all the importance, such as species of Paederus spp. [Newton and published data on Iranian Staphylinidae and arranging of Chandler, 1989; Smetana, 1995; Herman, 2001]. Although all the species known from Iran to the present time in an rove beetles appetites for other insects would seem to make impressive checklist. them obvious candidates for biological control of pests, and empirically they are believed to be important controls MATERIALS AND METHODS in the wild, experiments with using them have not been The published data on Staphylinidae family in Iran was notably successful [White, 1983]. 128 Fig. 1.
