I was escorted from the front door through the house. Persian rugs in every room. Queen Ann furniture. And finally a beauti- fully appointed 24-track studio with multi-paned French doors overlooking the pool in the back yard. Here is where I got to speak with Tom Kelly, 38, (whose home it was) and Billy Steinberg, 37. Everyone is acquainted with the fruits of their labors, Le. songs like Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," Madonna's "Like A Virgin," and most recently Heart's #1 single "Alone." But very few people know what they do, how they do it, or even who they are for that matter. Anyone in the business can tell you that a great voice, killer musicians and the best producer on earth are all worthless un- less you have a great song to work with. You start with the song and everything else comes after. Billy Steinberg (just in from Palm Springs where he grew up and still keeps his primary home and office complete with recep- tionist) was seated with an acoustic guitar that he strummed thoughout the interview. Tom Kelly, who was raised in the mid- west and moved to IA in the mid-seventies, sat in the chair facing the console as I got a chance to ask these two soft-spoken and very articulate gentlemen how they create the vehicles for the brash and more visible breed called stars.
