SCOPE AND CONTENTS

The French Revolution Era Documents from the Seaver Collection 1790-1800 are miscellaneous documents collected by Henry A. Seaver. They include public documents signed by the major actors in this tumultuous era of French history, as well as a few letters by participants during this decade. Seaver collected the various documents to secure the autographs of the prominent individuals of the era.

The documents are listed in chronological order. The descriptions provided an indication of the nature of the document, its origin and the individuals involved with the document, usually acting as an official of the French government of the time. In some documents the signature of an official signing the document is not legible. In other cases it was not feasible to establish the full name of an official and provide his dates. Where the full name of the officials and his dates could be established, they are provided with each entry for the particular document. If a scholar can provide new information on a particular name (or a correction if there are errors), please provide the librarian in charge of the Mortimer Rare Book Room with the information.

Many of the documents use the French Republican Calendar, a calendar that was utilized between 1793 and 1805. These dates are given along with the conventional Gregorian calendar dates.

All of the documents are in the French language.
