  • Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama
    e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama Courtney Watson, Ph.D. Radford University Roanoke, Virginia, United States [email protected] ABSTRACT Cultural movements including #TimesUp and #MeToo have contributed momentum to the demand for and development of smart, justified female criminal characters in contemporary television drama. These women are representations of shifting power dynamics, and they possess agency as they channel their desires and fury into success, redemption, and revenge. Building on works including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, dramas produced since 2016—including The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, and Killing Eve—have featured the rise of women who use rule-breaking, rebellion, and crime to enact positive change. Keywords: #TimesUp, #MeToo, crime, television, drama, power, Margaret Atwood, revenge, Gone Girl, Orange is the New Black, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, Killing Eve Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy 37 Watson From the recent popularity of the anti-heroine in novels and films like Gone Girl to the treatment of complicit women and crime-as-rebellion in Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to the cultural watershed moments of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, there has been a groundswell of support for women seeking justice both within and outside the law. Behavior that once may have been dismissed as madness or instability—Beyoncé laughing wildly while swinging a baseball bat in her revenge-fantasy music video “Hold Up” in the wake of Jay-Z’s indiscretions comes to mind—can be examined with new understanding.

  • NVS 12-1-13-Announcements-Page;
    Announcements: CFPs, conference notices, & current & forthcoming projects and publications of interest to neo-Victorian scholars (compiled by the NVS Assistant Editors) ***** CFPs: Journals, Special Issues & Collections (Entries that are only listed, without full details, were highlighted in a previous issue of NVS. Entries are listed in order of abstract/submission deadlines.) Penny Dreadfuls and the Gothic Edited Collection Abstracts due: 18 December 2020 Articles due: 30 April 2021 Famed for their scandalous content and supposed pernicious influence on a young readership, it is little wonder why the Victorian penny dreadful was derided by critics and, in many cases, censored or banned. These serialised texts, published between the 1830s until their eventual decline in the 1860s, were enormously popular, particularly with working-class readers. Neglecting these texts from Gothic literary criticism creates a vacuum of working-class Gothic texts which have, in many cases, cultural, literary and socio-political significance. This collection aims to redress this imbalance and critically assess these crucial works of literature. While some of these penny texts (i.e. String of Pearls, Mysteries of London, and Varney the Vampyre to name a few) are popularised and affiliated with the Gothic genre, many penny bloods and dreadfuls are obscured by these more notable texts. As well as these traditional pennys produced by such prolific authors as James Malcolm Rymer, Thomas Peckett Press, and George William MacArthur Reynolds, the objective of this collection is to bring the lesser-researched, and forgotten, texts from neglected authors into scholarly conversation with the Gothic tradition and their mainstream relations. This call for papers requests essays that explore these ephemeral and obscure texts in relevance to the Gothic mode and genre.

This has been aided by Jo Waugh’s meticulous attention to detail and vast knowledge of nineteenth-century literature and the early assistance of big Zimmerman fan JT. I am grateful to the NHS for still being on this planet, long may its existence also continue. Much thought and thanks must also go to my late, great Mother, who in the early stages of my life pushed me onwards, initially arguing with the education department of Birmingham City Council when they said that I was not promising enough to do ‘O’ levels. Tim Moore, stepson and good friend must also be thanked for his digital wizardry. Finally, I am immensely grateful to my wife Joyce for her valued help in checking all my final drafts and the manner in which she has encouraged me along the years of my research; standing right beside me as she has always done when I have faced other challenging issues.

  • October 2018 Performance Report
    Performance Report October 2018 Richard Bell, BBC iPlayer BBC Communications 07725641207 | [email protected] October 2018 summary • October set a new record for total requests to BBC iPlayer, with 334m requests for TV programmes overall, up a huge 18% compared to October 2017. • October was also a record-breaking month for the average number of requests per day, thanks to the continued success of Killing Eve, as well as new series of Doctor Who, The Apprentice and Strictly Come Dancing. There were an average of 10.8m requests per day, building on September’s strong performance of 10.7m average requests per day. • Episode one of Killing Eve was the most requested programme in October, getting more than 3.5m requests – all 8 episodes of the series appear in the top 20 requested episodes. Episode one of The Cry (released at the end of September) also performed well in October. • Live requests for programmes and events on BBC remained consistent with September at 16%. • Please note: Top performing episodes for August and September 2018 have been included in this pack. Consistent with previous months: • TV platforms remain the largest device type accessing BBC iPlayer with 56% of total requests. • The profile of BBC iPlayer users remains strongly under-55 in terms of age, which is younger than the typical TV viewer’s profile (although more in line with home broadband users). • BBC iPlayer is used for TV at roughly the same time of day as linear TV viewing, although there is proportionally more daytime and later-peak use.

For 30 years he has ruled the world of retail fashion – bringing the high street to the catwalk and the catwalk to the high street – but after a damaging public inquiry, his image is tarnished. To save his reputation, he decides to bounce back with a highly publicized and extravagant party celebrating his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos.
