It is widespread in forest and woodlands as well as being able to live in and around buildings. It will feed on and damage almost any edible thing. The ship rat is most frequently identified with catastrophic declines of birds on islands. It is very agile and often frequents tree tops searching for food and nesting there in bunches of leaves and twigs. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description A slender rat with large hairless ears, the ship rat (Rattus rattus) may be grey-brown on the back with either a similarly coloured or creamish-white belly, or it may be black all over. The uniformly- coloured tail is always longer than the head and body length combined. Its body weight is usually between 120 and 160 g but it can exceed 200 g. The work of Yosida (1980) and his co-workers has shown that there are two forms of R. rattus that differ in chromosome number. The more widespread Oceanic form has 38 chromosomes and is the ship rat of Europe, the Mediterranean region, America, Australia and New Zealand. -

0 Enregisterment in Historical Contexts: A Framework Paul Stephen Cooper A thesis submitted to the University of Sheffield for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics February 2013 1 ABSTRACT In this thesis I discuss how the phenomena of indexicality and enregisterment (Silverstein 2003; Agha 2003) can be observed and studied in historical contexts via the use of historical textual data. I present a framework for the study of historical enregisterment which compares data from corpora of both nineteenth-century and modern Yorkshire dialect material, and the results of an online survey of current speakers so as to ascertain the validity of the corpus data and to use ‘the present to explain the past’ (Labov 1977:226). This framework allows for the identification of enregistered repertoires of Yorkshire dialect in both the twenty-first and nineteenth centuries. This is achieved by combining elicited metapragmatic judgements and examples of dialect features from the online survey with quantitative frequency analysis of linguistic features from Yorkshire dialect literature and literary dialect (Shorrocks 1996) and qualitative metapragmatic discourse (Johnstone et al 2006) from sources such as dialect dictionaries, dialect grammars, travel writing, and glossaries. I suggest that processes of enregisterment may operate along a continuum and that linguistic features may become ‘deregistered’ as representative of a particular variety; I also suggest that features may become ‘deregistered’ to the point of becoming ‘fossil forms’, which is more closely related to Labov’s (1972) definition of the ultimate fate of a linguistic stereotype. 539 BIOSYSTEMATICS OF THE NATIVE RODENTS OF THE GALAPAGOS ARCHIPELAGO, ECUADOR JAMES L. PATTON AND MARK S. HAFNER' Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720 The native rodent fauna of the Galapagos Archipelago consists of seven species belonging to the generalized Neotropical rice rat (oryzomyine) stock of the family Cricetidae. These species comprise three rather distinct assemblages, each of which is varyingly accorded generic or subgeneric rank: (1) Oryzomys (sensu stricto), including 0. galapagoensis [known only from Isla San Cristobal] and 0. bauri [from Isla Santa Fe] ; (2) Nesoryzomys, including N. narboroughi [from Isla Fernandina], N. swarthi [from Isla Santiago], N. darwini [from Isla Santa Cruz] , and N. indefessus [from both Islas Santa Cruz and Baltra] ; and (3) Megalomys curioi [from Isla Santa Cruz]. Megalomys is only known from subfossil material and will not be treated here. Four of the remaining six species are now probably extinct as only 0. bauri and N. narboroughi are known cur- rently from viable populations. The time and pattern of radiation, and the phylogenetic relationships of Oryzomys and Nesoryzomys are assessed by karyological, biochemical, and anatomical investigations of the two extant species, and by multivariate morpho- metric analyses of existing museum specimens of all taxa. These data suggest the following: (a) Nesoryzomys is a very unique entity and should be recognized at the generic level; (b) there were at least two separate invasions of the islands with Nesoryzomys representing an early entrant followed considerably later by Oryzomys (s.s.); (c) both taxa of Oryzomys are quite recent immigrants and are probably derived from 0. -

Texas, USA, E-mail: [email protected]. *Corresponding author Although the Galápagos Islands are recognized for their contribution to our understanding of evolutionary theory and have received the attention of scientists for over 185 years, our understanding of the native rodents there has been minimal relative to many other groups of organisms. Much of what we knew through most of the 20th century was based solely on species descriptions. Chromosome data has been limited to only Nesoryzomys narboroughi (2n = 32, FN (number of autosomal arms) = 50) and Aegialomys galapagoensis (2n = 56; FN = 58). We present the karyotypes of the only remaining extant species in the genus, N. swarthi (2n = 56; FN = 54) and N. fernandinae (2n = 44; FN = 54). Chromosomal banding reveals that extensive rearrangement has occurred within Nesoryzomys, including Robertsonian fusion and tandem fusion events but these alone cannot account for the diverse diploid numbers found within the genus. We propose that 1) N. swarthi repre- sents the ancestral karyotype for the genus, similar to A. galapagoensis, 2) N. swarthi and N. fernandinae share the same fundamental number, suggesting divergence by Robertsonian fusions, and 3) N. narboroughi has the most derived karyotype, based on banding morphology and low diploid number. -

Popular political oratory and itinerant lecturing in Yorkshire and the North East in the age of Chartism, 1837-60 Janette Lisa Martin This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of York Department of History January 2010 ABSTRACT Itinerant lecturers declaiming upon free trade, Chartism, temperance, or anti- slavery could be heard in market places and halls across the country during the years 1837- 60. The power of the spoken word was such that all major pressure groups employed lecturers and sent them on extensive tours. Print historians tend to overplay the importance of newspapers and tracts in disseminating political ideas and forming public opinion. This thesis demonstrates the importance of older, traditional forms of communication. Inert printed pages were no match for charismatic oratory. Combining personal magnetism, drama and immediacy, the itinerant lecturer was the most effective medium through which to reach those with limited access to books, newspapers or national political culture. Orators crucially united their dispersed audiences in national struggles for reform, fomenting discussion and coalescing political opinion, while railways, the telegraph and expanding press reportage allowed speakers and their arguments to circulate rapidly. Understanding of political oratory and public meetings has been skewed by over- emphasis upon the hustings and high-profile politicians. This has generated two misconceptions: that political meetings were generally rowdy and that a golden age of political oratory was secured only through Gladstone’s legendary stumping tours. However, this thesis argues that, far from being disorderly, public meetings were carefully regulated and controlled offering disenfranchised males a genuine democratic space for political discussion. -

For this reason, the fauna inhabiting the Galápagos Islands has been the focus of numerous emblematic ecological and evolutionary studies. However, studies focused on rodents have been scarce. Rice rats radiated in situ into at least six endemic species: Aegialomys galapagoensis, Nesoryzomys narboroughi, N. swarthi, N. fernandinae, N. indefessus, and N. darwini. Only the first four species remain extant on the archipelago. These species are considered vulnerable, mainly due to human activities and invasive species. Despite their interesting evolutionary history, questions surrounding phylogenetic relationships, colonization events, genetic diversity and demography of populations remain unresolved. -

Musical Networks in Early Victorian Manchester R M Johnson PhD 2020 Musical Networks in Early Victorian Manchester RACHEL MARGARET JOHNSON A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Manchester Metropolitan University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Awarded for a Collaborative Programme of Research at the Royal Northern College of Music by Manchester Metropolitan University 2020 Abstract My dissertation demonstrates how a new and distinctive musical culture developed in the industrialising society of early Victorian Manchester. It challenges a number of existing narratives relating to the history of music in nineteenth-century Britain, and has implications for the way we understand the place of music in other industrial societies and cities. The project is located at the nexus between musicology, cultural history and social history, and draws upon ideas current in urban studies, ethnomusicology and anthropology. Contrary to the oft-repeated claim that it was Charles Hallé who ‘brought music to Manchester’ when he arrived in 1848, my archival research reveals a vast quantity and variety of music-making and consumption in Manchester in the 1830s and 1840s. The interconnectedness of the many strands of this musical culture is inescapable, and it results in my adoption of ‘networks’ as an organising principle. Tracing how the networks were formed, developed and intertwined reveals just how embedded music was in the region’s social and civic life. Ultimately, music emerges as an agent of particular power in the negotiation and transformation of the concerns inherent within the new industrial city. The dissertation is structured as a series of interconnected case studies, exploring areas as diverse as the music profession, glee and catch clubs, the Hargreaves Choral Society’s programme notes, Mechanics’ Institutions and the early Victorian public music lecture. -

Occasional Papers Museum of Texas Tech University Number 338 15 July 2016 DESCRIPTION OF A NEW TRIBE OF SIGMODONTINE RODENTS (CRICETIDAE: SIGMODONTINAE) WITH AN UPDATED SUMMARY OF VALID TRIBES AND THEIR GENERIC CONTENTS JORGE SALAZAR-BRAVO, ULYSES F. J. PARDIÑAS, HORACIO ZEBALLOS, AND PABLO TETA ABSTRACT We provide a formal recognition to a tribal level clade composed of Andinomys and Puno- mys, two extant sigmodontine genera consistently and repeatedly recovered in the phylogenetic analyses of molecular and morphological data. As currently recognized, this tribe is distributed in middle to high elevations in the Andes of Bolivia, Peru, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina in habitats that range from high elevation grasslands and ecotonal areas to dry Puna. Within this new clade, Punomys appears as the more specialized member as it is fully restricted to rocky outcrops and their immediate surrounding areas at elevations above 4400 m on both sides of the Altiplano. In contrast, Andinomys occupies a broad elevational range (500–4000 m) and multiple habitats, from subtropical mountain forests and semiarid Puna and Prepuna to high altitudinal grasslands. Both taxa share a number of possible synapomorphies (e.g., presence of caudal enlargement of the post-zygapophysis in the second and eighth thoracic vertebrates, unilocular-hemiglandular stomachs with a large corpus and deep incisura angularis, and very similar chromosomal complements) and other diagnostic morphological features. The supratribal phylogenetic relationships of the taxon here named are not resolved even with the moderate amount of molecular data now available. In addition, we present a revised classification for the Sigmodontinae and comment on the content and context of this unique radiation of the Cricetidae.
