  • Comparative Readings of the Lebanese Media System
Comparative Readings of the Lebanese Media System Dissertation zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades einer Doktorin der Philosophie (Dr. Phil.) der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Erfurt vorgelegt von Sarah El Richani aus Choueifat (Libanon) Erfurt, 2014 urn:nbn:de:gbv:547-201600105 Erstes Gutachten: Prof. Dr. Kai Hafez (Universität Erfurt) Zweites Gutachten: Prof. Jean Seaton (Universität von Westminster, London, Großbritannien) Eingereicht: 5. November 2014 Datum der Promotion: 8. April 2015 Summary The focus of this dissertation is on the Lebanese media system and the extent this system can be subsumed under one of the three ideal types put forth by Daniel Hallin and Paolo Mancini in their seminal work Comparing Media Systems. This endeavour uses the Hallin and Mancini framework as a scholarly springboard in an effort to take their sets of variables and models beyond the established democracies of Europe and North America. This research responds to a recurring call for comparative work and particularly for the application of the Hallin and Mancini framework on other non-Western media systems. By critically applying their framework to the Lebanese media system, this thesis assesses the complex dimensions developed by the two scholars. These include: the development of media markets, political parallelism, the degree of development of journalistic professionalism and the degree and nature of state intervention. Hallin and Mancini acknowledge that restricting themselves to the western world was a limitation. They also suggest that their work should serve as an inspiration for a process of re-modelling by adapting and reconfiguring their framework and their three ideal types to a given context.

  • Media with a Mission: Why Fairness and Balance Are Not Priorities in Lebanon’S Journalistic Codes
International Journal of Communication 4 (2010), 719–737 1932–8036/20100719 Media With a Mission: Why Fairness and Balance Are Not Priorities in Lebanon’s Journalistic Codes YASMINE T. DABBOUS Louisiana State University Investigating why fairness and balance are not priorities in Lebanon, this article suggests that the country’s historical and sociopolitical evolution favored a partisan model where press institutions are either owned by or supportive of political blocs, parties, or personalities. Factors such as the za’im system, foreign patronization, institutionalized sectarianism, social inequality, and the civil war reinforced partisan affiliations and created a double, unwritten social contract: An unspoken pact joins journalists and media owners, with the former serving the interests of the latter through their reporting. At the same time, an unwritten agreement connects journalists and citizens, who see the media as indicators of political opinion. Background Information Lebanon today is divided among several parties, forming two major blocs that reflect the tensions in the larger Middle East. Until this article was written, the Saudi-backed, pro-Western Future Movement was allied with both the Lebanese Forces and the Qornet Shehwan Gathering. Dubbed collectively as the “March 14 alliance,” the three parties championed the withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon in 2005, following the assassination of the Future Movement’s leader, Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.1 At the heart of the second bloc is the Iranian-backed, pro-Syrian Hizbullah. The alliance Hizbullah maintains with Amal, a secular socialist party, as well as with the Syrian Nationalists, the Free Patriotic Movement, and the Giants Movement, is known collectively as the “March 8 alliance.” Although this binary divide may suggest a civilizational tension in the Samuel Huntington style, Lebanon’s political reality is much more complex, with alliances often shifting to reflect larger tensions in the tumultuous Middle East.

This reflects on its media environment which enjoys the same relative safety, even in a context that has become increasingly polarised and radicalised. Currently the Lebanese media landscape is in fact an arena of political patronage and domestic and foreign influence peddling. The Lebanese media sector is facing a profound crisis and there are many journalists and media staff, working in the local and pan-Arab media outlets based in Beirut, who have not been paid for long time or have lost their jobs. As-Safir, a historic newspaper, was forced to close, and An-Nahar has weakened and had to restructure. Even Al-Arabiya and Al-Jazeera offices in Beirut and in the region have reduced the number of their staff members. The only media outlets that resist are those financed by large investors, linked to political-sectarian actors in the region.

  • Palestinian Refugees and Mediated Connections to Palestine1
Networking Knowledge 8(2) Special Issue: Mediatizing Gaza Palestinian Refugees and Mediated Connections to Palestine1 MAY FARAH, American University of Beirut ABSTRACT This article presents a description and analysis of young Palestinian refugees media use in the context of a newly globalized media age. Refugees, like diasporic populations everywhere, live in a world marked by de-territorialization and re- territorialization, where such populations often come to think of themselves as part of a national community via mediated representations. The new media – satellite television and the internet – has helped shape their understanding and connection to Palestine and other Palestinians. For the young refugees living in refugee camps in Beirut, maintaining a strong connection to Palestine and a Palestinian community motivates their media access and use, which is tied to their desire to return to Palestine, even one made up of a geographically different area in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPTs). Indeed, it is via media that the refugees have come to learn of the OPTs, where they hope to ‘return’ to live in a recognized Palestinian state. KEYWORDS Palestinian refugees; media; the Occupied Territories; mediated connections 1 This article is based on material from a larger research project, some of which appears in a different form in Farah, May. (2014), ‘Mediating Palestine’, in M. Shumow, (ed.), Mediated Communities: Civic Voices, Empowerment and Belonging in the Digital Age. New York, NY: Peter Lang 1 Networking Knowledge 8(2) Special Issue: Mediatizing Gaza Introduction Palestinian refugees in Lebanon have always mediated Palestine. From the first refugees who arrived in 1948 to today’s youth, the third generation of refugees2 now living in camps in Lebanon, the media have proffered a means to stay informed about current events and a vehicle through which to connect to their homeland.
